"Henson's art has been exhibited in many locations, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Venice Biennale, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. His current practice involves holding one exhibition in Australia every two years, and up to three overseas exhibitions each year. Henson's photographs reflect an interest in ambiguity and transition. The use of chiaroscuro is common throughout his works. His photographs are painterly and often presented as diptychs, triptychs and other groupings. Henson's works often meditate on the categories of and relationships between male and female; youth and adulthood; day and night; light and dark; nature and civilisation. His images often use flattened perspective and tend towards abstraction. The faces of the subjects are often blurred or partly shadowed and do not directly face the viewer. According to Crawford, Henson presents "adolescents in their states of despair, intoxication and immature ribaldry". He has said that these "moments of transition and metamorphosis are important in everyone's lives". Henson's intention is to use photography for creative expression. He states that he is not interested in a political or sociological agenda, although the viewer cannot help but relate his works to their own stance on these issues. Henson, however, is not intending his photographs to be authoritative ...

UPDATE: Results are out. 50/50. The Latin legal term persona non grata reflects the position of the Arts and culture within contemporary Australian society. Its use figuratively underpins the ethos inherent in my short film. Persona Non Grata is a surrealist film noir, exploring the death of art, censorship, and child protection within this society. It was during the 2008 Bill Henson furore that the widespread attitudes of philistinism toward the Arts and culture within Australian society as a whole became fully apparent. Hensons work was labelled child pornography and absolutely revolting by Kevin Rudd himself. As a result of my strong opinions on this case, and associated incidents (the Nicole Boenig-mcgrade Subiaco incident , the Rudd governments proposal of internet censorship in the name of child protection), I discovered a source of inspiration to draw the basis of my major work. Through Persona Non Grata, I have confronted responders to come to the realisation that our individual perceptions of art as a cultural reflection of our true selves must not be impeded by the manipulated perversion of artistic intent. - Shortened reflection statement. English Extension 2 - 2009 UPDATE: Results are out. 50/50.

Extract from the Bill Henson Art Censorship Debate in 2008 Clive Hamilton and David Marr discuss points of difference regarding matters of censorship. Clive in his prepared speech noted :"There is no censorship worth noting in Australia" and then raises the issue of the censorship laws in this country, but although he considers that Bill Henson's images weren't pornographic he decries the fact they were mailed out and posted on the Internet. David Marr points out that the censorship system which Clive acknowledges exists rated them PG which means that anyone can view them whatever the medium.
