The drum rhythm changes to that of the "emaNdzawe", believed to be spirits of the "Ndau" people, native to Mozambique, whose cattle had been stolen by a group of Swazis centuries ago; the Ndau had been killed by those Swazis too and their spirits have to be placated. The candidates wear red cloths, symbolising the blood of the "emaNdzawe" or Ndau. They walk to the river where the candidates have "umuti", medicine rubbed in a cut made in their tongue (to ensure they always speak the truth); chickens are decapitated, the candidates have to drimk a little of the blood and they are then immersed in the river: three times pushed under, like a baptism. They "die" as a normal human being, to be revived later in the village. All candidates are covered with a white cloth and loaded into a truck to be returned to the village. The candidates run on hands and knees and try to eat these pieces; they "fight like dogs" over it, to show they will later compete for their patients! Also in Swazi culture, "sibindzi" or liver, means "courage". They then have to drink "umuti" medicine again and vomit it out to cleanse them. Later in the afternoon they dress in their ceremonial outfits and dance to the drum rhythms, associated with the "emadloti" or ancestral spirits. The gall bladders from their goats have been hidden and the candidates have to find those by "kuphengula". divination, in which suggestions are shouted at the "bogobela" seniors who alays answer with the same: "izwayi, 'mgoma, izwayi" (I hear you, sangoma) or "siyavuma" (we agree). Yet, the candidates figure it out and they will retrieve their gall bladder, that is then tied into their hair by one of the seniors as a sign of their qualification. LaMabuza, a kind lady, has a "school" for tangoma (plural of sangoma), media between the "emadloti" or ancestral spirits and the people, in her homestead of Bethany near Matsapha in central Swaziland. Once a year there is a ceremony where the candidates must prove their skills to get their qualifications. The two-day ceremony starts with the making of "umuti", traditional medicines, and while the drums are pounding, the "ematfwasa" or candidates are brought out, walking on their knees as a sign of submission to the spirits. The "bogobela" or senior tangoma then rub umuti in cuts made on their bodies. to make them strong. They then have a goat placed on their backs; its heart is pierced and the candidates have to drink its blood. They then have to drink that "umuti" medicine and vomit it out: this is a test of their sincerity, if the candidates had violated the taboos they had to follow during their training, it is believed the blood would clot inside them and they would die.
