BMCC's Kimberly Thompson wins CUNY Grand Prize. MARCH 4, 2010 View Slide Show STORY HIGHLIGHTS BMCC science major, Kimberly Thompson, wins Grand Prize in CUNY-wide Nobel Challenge essay contest. Thompson's winning essay explores the Nobel prizewinning work of Elinor Ostrom, who proposed eight basic tenets common to sustainable resources. CUNY Vice Chancellor for Research Gillian Small created the contest to make Nobel prizewinning work accessible to a larger audience. BMCC science major Kimberly Thompson just won first place in the economics category of the 2009 CUNY Nobel Science Challenge—as well as $5000 as an overall Grand Prizewinner. Thompson--the contest's only awardee from a CUNY community college--wrote her award-winning essay on the Nobel-prizewinning work of Elinor Ostrom, who proposed eight basic tenets relating to sustainable common-pool (shared) resources, or CPRs. A key component to Ostroms work, writes Thompson, is an interdisciplinary approach; her research and publications on CPRs draw from conservation biology, ecology, psychology, and economics, among others. For example, Ostrom employed game theory, in experiments evaluating players strategies in non-cooperative action situations. She also examined the impact of trust and reciprocity, and found they correlate with growth and investment in CPR management. Ostroms findings indicate that how people relate to each other within economic and social systems is as key to resource sustainability as ecological ...

Graduates of the Borough of Manhattan Community Colleges Health Information Technology (HIT) program are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam—a necessary step if they want to take full career advantage of the medical industrys shift to electronic medical records, or EMRs. There are certificate coding schools out there, says BMCC professor Rawle Chichester, who teaches Intro to Electronic Medical Records, but this is the only program in New York City accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Informational Management Education [CAHIIM], that awards an associate degree—making you eligible to take the RHIT exam. The only one. With unemployment hitting 10.6% in New York City, money spent on education and training must be wisely placed. Students who earn an associate degree in BMCCs HIT program are investing their education dollars to enter a field that is not only growing, but backed by the Obama administration—which set aside $46 billion to help doctors and hospitals go electronic, by 2014. From ethics to coding: hands-on, well rounded training At BMCC, students experience first hand, the type of medical data experience theyll encounter as EMR professionals. We have practice software we get directly from AHIMA--the American Health Information Management Association, says Chichester, which students can access from home or in class. Entering a field thats breaking new ground in information sharing, they also ...

BMCC's Department of Caring November 18, 2009 Interview with Professor Jacqueline Nichols. Jacqueline Nichols was working at Harlem Hospital as associate director of nursing in the mid-90s when she mentioned to a colleague—a BMCC nursing instructor who was running a program at the hospital—that shed been thinking about going into teaching. The instructor suggested that I apply for a teaching position as soon as I had my Masters degree, Nichols recalls. Degree in hand, she was offered an adjunct position at BMCC, moving up to full-time faculty status in 1999. Today, she is chairperson of the colleges Department of Nursing and an ardent champion of nursing as a profession. Mastering the basics Our nursing program is open to students who meet specific academic qualifications, says Nichols, but because there are so many more applicants than openings, its highly competitive. Once theyre in, students must first complete a pre-clinical course series covering such basic areas as English composition, math and science; only then do they move on to the clinical phase, which combines classroom work with observation and practice in actual healthcare facilities. As part of their clinical curriculum, students hone diagnostic and treatment skills in the colleges new Human Patient Simulation lab, a computer-based facility. Graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the New York State licensing examination for Registered Nurse. In addition to chairing ...

BMCC's Painting Classes Are 'Sweet' Interview with Professor Lisa Mellinger. Student enrolled in Intro to Painting get to make a colorful mess in the classroom by painting compositions, mixing colors, and for one project, sketching and painting a picture of their favorite sweet treats. Lisa Mellingers students explore the techniques of painting; analyzing the intellectual, cultural and physical components of the visual arts. They attain a working knowledge of art terminology specifically related to painting. And, along the way, they have a whole lot of fun. Project pineapple Mellingers students are at different artistic levels. Some have painted before, and some are new to this type of art. On this particular day, the students are drawing and painting a pineapple that Mellinger placed in front of the classroom. In my class, I like to start off with drawing the object. From there, well learn about color values —lights and darks, says Mellinger. I like having the students paint a pineapple because a pineapple is a universal symbol that means different things, such as happiness and good luck. Along a back wall of the classroom are realistic paintings of the candy and sweets from the previous project. The artwork is so impressive that its hard to believe most of Mellingers students have never enrolled in an art class before. Mellinger is a painter, professor, and chef After graduating from college, Mellinger, who hails from Washington state, painted restaurants, worked for ...
