Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 -- February 3, 1959) known professionally as Buddy Holly, was an American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll. Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Elder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll." His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, and Bob Dylan, and exerted a profound influence on popular music. Some examples of recent influence include MGMT and Weezer of the "buddy holly" song fame. Holly was amongst the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Holly #13 among "The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time".

"American Pie" is a folk rock song by singer-songwriter Don McLean. Recorded and released on the American Pie album in 1971, the single was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972. A re-release in 1991 did not chart in the US, but reached number 12 in the UK. The song is an oblique recounting of "The Day the Music Died" — the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.), as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The importance of "American Pie" to America's musical and cultural heritage was recognized by the Songs of the Century education project which listed the song as the number five song of the twentieth century. Some Top 40 stations initially played only side two of the single, but the song's popularity eventually forced stations to play the entire piece. "American Pie" is Don McLean's signature song. Above from WIkipedia Lyrics A long long time ago I can still remember How that music used to make me smile And I knew that if I had my chance I could make those people dance And maybe they'd be happy for a while Did you write the book of love And do you have faith in God above If the Bible tells you so Now do you believe in rock 'n roll And can music save your mortal soul And can you teach me how to dance real slow Well, I know that you're in love with him Cuz I saw you dancin' in the gym You both kicked off your shoes Man, I dig those rhythm and blues I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck With a pink carnation and ...

"It Doesn't Matter Anymore" is a pop ballad written by Paul Anka and recorded by Buddy Holly in 1958. Legend has it that Buddy was on his way into the studio to record True Love ways, Moondreams and the now legendary 'Raining in My heart'. Paul Anka stopped him and said ive written a song just for you Buddy. He played him the song, and Buddy demanded Dick Jacobs write a musical accompaniement, on the spot!!! the rest is history. The song reached #13 as a posthumous hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in early 1959 shortly after Holly was killed in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. The single was a two-sided hit, backed with "Raining In My Heart". "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was Holly's last US Top 20 hit and featured the orchestral backing of Dick Jacobs. It was also successful in the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom the song reached #1 on April 24, 1959 and remained in the top slot for three weeks becoming the first posthumous #1 hit UK chart history. Holly would continue to achieve posthumous chart success in the UK well into the 1960s, being revered by the top artsist of the day including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Hollies(whonamed themselves after him) and many others. Hollys decision to record with strings proved to be very foresightful. The charts would soon be dominated by a new brand of music, relying heavily on string arrangements. Oregon Zoo, 14th Aug 2009 ------------- Baez introduces her crew and then sings Deportee. Joan is famous for being an interpretor of songs and has some famous covers. This song here was written by Woody Guthrie as a protest song over what Guthrie considered the racist mistreatment of the passengers before and after the accident. The crash resulted in the deaths of four Americans and 28 migrant farm workers who were being deported from California back to Mexico. Guthrie was reportedly struck by the fact that radio and newspaper coverage of the event did not give the victims' names, but referred to them merely as "deportees." He responded with a poem, assigning symbolic names to the dead: "Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita; adiós, mis amigos, Jesús y María..."
