Dolores Hope, the widow of actor-comedian Bob Hope, died of natural causes at her Los Angeles home Monday, her family said. She was 102. Although she put her singing career on hold after her marriage to Hope, Dolores Hope was active as a philanthropist, involved in her own causes as well as her husband's. Military troops entertained by her husband's USO shows knew Dolores Hope because she would usually close the shows with a rendition of "Silent Night," according to a biography provided by her family. Her last USO show performance came at age 84 when she sang "White Christmas" to Operation Desert Storm troops from the back of a truck in the Saudi desert. She restarted her singing career at the age of 83 by recording several albums. She performed with Rosemary Clooney at Rainbow and Stars in New York for several weeks. Born in Harlem in New York on May 27, 1909, Dolores DeFina was a singer at Manhattan's Vogue Club when she met Bob Hope in 1933. It was "love at first song," the biography quotes Bob Hope saying. The couple married the next year and later adopted four children. The couple moved from New York to California in the late 1930s, where he pursued a movie and radio career. Bob Hope was 100 when he died on July 27, 2003. The family will hold a private funeral at burial at the Bob Hope Memorial Garden, San Fernando Mission, California, where her husband was interred.
Theatrical trailer for the 1958 Bob Hope comedy, ALIAS JESSE JAMES, with Rhonda Fleming, Wendell Corey and Gloria Talbott. The weakest of Hope's trio of western spoofs -- which also included PALEFACE (1948) and SON OF PALEFACE (1952) -- the proceedings seem to amble about with scant chuckles to be found among the saddles and sagebrush until the film's finale, which, alone was worth the price of admission.

Over the decades, Bob Hope's wife, Dolores, accompanied him on numerous trips abroad, most notably to entertain the troops. For Bob's 1981 30th anniversary with NBC special, this medley was assembled. Dolores began her career as a stage singer on Broadway in the 1930s and at the time she met Bob, was more well-known than he. Wouldn't be that way for long though. Ronald Reagan's White House tenure provided more joke fodder during the 1980s than any other single topic. Here are some samples fro Hope's monologues that appear in THE LAUGH MAKERS: Why not an actor in the White House? LBJ was a rancher, Jimmy Carter was a farmer. I think it'll be refreshing to have someone in the Oval Office who's not handy with fertilizer. Can you believe all the jokes Reagan's been cracking since the shooting? The latest theory is that the bullet passed through Henny Youngman. Nancy paid a thousand dollars a setting for new dinnerware. She had to. It hadn't been replaced since Ike, and it was getting embarrassing serving state dinners in mess kits. Nancy has expensive tastes, but I think it was her parents' fault. When she was a baby, they'd tickle her on the chin and say "Gucci, Gucci, Gucci." I don't know what the Reagans will be having for Thanksgiving this year, but after David Stockman's speech, I know one thing he'd rather stuff than a turkey. Mr. Reagan sent in his tax return this year, and it came back with corrections in Tip O'Neill's handwriting. Reagan says if he's not reelected, he'll return to acting. Boy, if that's not a surefire way to get votes, what is? The Reagans have a beautiful Christmas display on the White House lawn designed by Justice Sandra Day O'Conner. It's their first Nativity scene with three wise women. When he was told that Jimmy Carter got only a million dollars for his memoirs, Reagan said, "Hey, if he wants to work ...
In this segment, Tony Randall plays director and attempts to produce an airable TV campaign commercial for Hope. It's interesting in that it gives the viewer a glimpse of what Hope's set at NBC looked like. It was the same set as Johnny Carson used and most of Hope's sketch shot in Burbank were done here. Note, too, Hope's longtime cue card wizard Barney McNulty holding cards beside the camera. He worked with Hope for over 40 years and also held the cards for many sitcoms and movies. He had worked many times with Randall on "The Odd Couple." There are many stories about Hope's relationship with Barney in Bob Mills' book "THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers." DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org My Favorite Brunette is a 1947 movie spoofing movie detectives and the film noir style. Starring Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour, it also features Lon Chaney, Jr. playing Willie, a character based on his Of Mice and Men role Lennie; Peter Lorre as Kismit, a comic take on his many film noir roles; and cameo appearances by film noir regular Alan Ladd and Hope partner Bing Crosby. The movie is now in the public domain and most copies of it available today are of poor quality. The film was later featured in an episode of Cinema Insomnia. The story is told in flashback from Death Row as Ronnie Jackson (Hope) relates the events to a group of reporters the events that lead to his predicament. Called in flight by Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan diverts his Air Force One flight to land at Pope Air Force Base to make a quick guest appearance with Bob. Such was the juice with top politicos that Hope had at the time, he had called Reagan IN THE AIR only that morning to suggest he drop in to appear on a two hour special being taped at Pope Air Force base and Ft. Bragg in Fayeteville, North Carolina. Reagan had just delivered the commencement speech at the University of Georgia and Hope had noticed mention of it in the morning paper. Reagan's decision drove the Secret Service up the wall because they had to hurriedly "sanitize" the area where the president would appear; they insisted that the plane taxi right up to the stage before Reagan emerged to reduce his exposure. The entire visit lasted about a half hour and Hope had his "drop in" guest and Reagan had a nice PR appearance that would be seen by millions in Hope's NBC audience. The two old troopers really knew what they were doing; free "cameo" appearances by major stars had been used to great advantage by Hope as far back as radio. Bob Hope is a New York theater critic and his wife (Lucille Ball in their final motion picture pairing) writes a play that may or may not be very good. Now Hope must either get out of reviewing the play or cause the breakup of his marriage. Based on the Broadway play by Ira Levin.
Fred blows a line and the skit continues on.
The second installment of the "road" series is a hilarious spoof of jungle-adventure movies. Chuck (Bing Crosby) and Hubert (Bob Hope) are carnival performers who thrive on trouble: They set fire to the carnival, sell a phony diamond and pair up with two attractive women. But when Chuck spends all the money to rescue Donna (Dorothy Lamour) from a slave market, he's unaware they're being scammed for a trip around Africa.
Second-rate vaudevillians Chester Hooton (Bob Hope) and Duke Johnson (Bing Crosby) set sail for Alaska -- running into a pair of killers and stealing a map to a secret gold mine along the way -- in this addition to the beloved "Road" series. Posing as the baddies once they arrive, Chester and Duke end up in trouble with the law and the natives while trying to find the gold mine and competing for the affections of Sal Van Hoyden (Dorothy Lamour).
Rare, television-produced "road" picture which most fans don't know about. Bing Crosby is scouting locations in Beirut to do another road picture--without his partner, Bob Hope! When he runs into Danny Thomas, who is judging a local beauty contest, Bing and Danny are kidnapped by a sheik who is out to punish Thomas because one of his ancestors committed the sin of getting a nose job. Many musical numbers, live camels and even Bob Hope himself add to the fun in this TV rarity.
Connie Stevens also received the Bob Hope Excellence in Entertainment Award at the 2011 Congressional Medal of Honor Society Celebration of Freedom Gala. This was another fun one to edit.
