Equal Protection under the Law! April 25, 3:53 PMMaricopa County Democrat ExaminerRobert McDonald I was watching and hearing with grave concern Friday afternoon when Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law Senate Bill 1070. This racist piece of legislation is the brainchild of Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce, my potential opponent in November 2010. As I heard the Governor sign this bill, I felt betrayed; betrayed by my government, betrayed by my state and betrayed by the leadership of this state. As a citizen of this nation and a resident of Arizona this law takes and degrades my status to that of a second class citizen just because of the color of my skin. This is not right and it should not be tolerated in the United States in 2010. This environment we are in, the tension that is being felt by the Mexican American community is quite raw. As I was passing out my petition yesterday, I had the feeling that I was not wanted at some white homes. Yet in others, I was more than welcome because I opposed Senate Bill 1070 and Russell Pearce. For many of you who do not know Russell Pearce, he is the current Republican state senator from Mesa, Arizona Legislative District 18. He has a history of racist views about Mexicans and Mexican Americans and yet he makes no bones about it. Back in the 1970s he was a Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff and he had a run in with a possible illegal immigrant who pulled a gun on him and shot his thumb off, at this point many agree is when he ...

Chanting, You say cut back, we say fight back and Hey hey, ho ho, SUNY flex has got to go, more than 300 members of United University Professions and their statewide affiliate NYSUT rallied at the state Capitol in Albany urging the state Legislature to eliminate yet another budget reduction for SUNY contained in Gov. Patersons proposed state budget and to reject his proposal that would virtually deregulate the University. SUNY has borne more than its share of budget cuts, said UUP President Phillip H. Smith. If the governors proposed $118 million reduction goes through, SUNY would have lost $528 million over the last two years, or 25 percent of its operating budget. Students are already suffering with bloated class sizes and cancelled courses, leading to delayed graduations. We cant afford to sacrifice tomorrows workforce and the states economic future, he said. Smith and the demonstrators also called on lawmakers to reject the governors proposed Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act. This should really be called the Public Higher Education Endangerment and Injury Act, Smith said, explaining the so-called flexibility initiative would have disastrous effects on SUNY and its students. He warned that under the bill, tuition could rise by 10 percent in a single year, and increase even more by giving individual campuses the authority to set their own undergraduate tuition rates. Not only would this price SUNY out of reach for many students, it would also allow ...

The Molly Maguires were a secret society of Irish coal miners in Pennsylvania in the period from the 1850's to the late 1870s. They seem to have been a direct importation of the system of secret Agrarian protection societies such as the Ribbonmen and Defenders which flourished in Ireland from the mid 1700s through the mid 1800s. No one knows the exact origin of the name "Molly Maguires". Some think the name Molly Maguire was used simply as a personification of Ireland. Others think Molly Maguire was a real woman who led a band of Defenders against the Orange Order in County Cavan. Being a secret society, little is known of the Molly Maguires, as they left nearly no written or oral trace behind them. The little information that is available is from the biased source of the enemies and persecuters of the Mollies. The Molly Maguires employed the traditional tactics of the Irish Secret Societies in combatting the ruthless mine owners in Pennsylvania. They used sabotage, violence and intimidation against the owners, overseers and their property. The mine and railroad owners hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to infiltrate the Molly Maguires, which they did, amassing enough spurious "evidence" to bring some fifty Mollies to trial, twnety of whom were sentenced to death by hanging. On June 11, 1877 ten Molly Maguires were hanged, six in Schuylkill County, PA, and four in Carbon County, PA. In the follwing two years, ten more Molly Maguires were hanged in the same counties ...
