Today the World Economic Forum will announce Scribd as a Technology Pioneer for 2011. Scribd is a social publishing and reading site that gives anyone with a document the tools to publish it. That means that everything from term papers to sheet music to whole books can be quickly converted from humdrum Word documents to fully searchable, shareable HTML5. CEO and co-founder Trip Adler believes that the iPad will profoundly change how people read. As more reading is done on devices, multimedia can become part of the experience—and so do other people. "For the first time ever, reading is a social experience," says Adler. Book club devotees might quibble with that, but Scribd has given rise to at least one totally new phenomenon: the viral book. Independent publisher Chelsea Green posted the entirety of a book called "Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink?" on Scribd. The book got over 100000 reads in the first 24 hours. "You have something that's already written, in a Word file or PDF," explains Adler. "We will instantly display it in a web browser in HTML5, and then we will make that content indexed by search engines, shareable on social sites, and available on any mobile device. This has huge, world-changing implications: now publishing is going to be completely democratized. A major publisher has the exact same publishing opportunity as a high school student." And the same opportunity to charge for their content, too. More info: Scribd web site: www ...

Hailed as a classic of war writing in the UK, The Junior Officers' Reading Club is a revelatory first-hand account of a young enlistee's profound coming of age. Attempting to stave off the tedium and pressures of army life in the Iraqi desert by losing themselves in the dusty paperbacks on the transit-camp bookshelves, Hennessey and a handful of his pals from military academy form the Junior Officers' Reading Club. By the time he reaches Afghanistan and the rest of the club are scattered across the Middle East, they are no longer cheerfully overconfident young recruits, hungering for action and glory. Hennessey captures how boys grow into men amid the frenetic, sometimes exhilarating violence, frequent boredom, and almost overwhelming responsibilities that frame a soldier's experience and the way we fight today. New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci discussed his new novel, "The Collectors," on its publication day as part of the Books & Beyond series sponsored by the Library's Center for the Book. In this sequel to "The Camel Club," renegade CIA agent Roger Seagraves has set himself up in the business of freelance assassination and treason. The Camel Club, a group of four dysfunctional crime solvers that includes a Library of Congress staff member, rises to the challenge after the sudden demise of the head of the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division. The Library's Preservation Office plays an important role in the story, as does the "Bay Psalm Book," the earliest extant book (1640) printed in British North America, which was bequeathed to the Library in 1966 by Adrian Van Sinderen.
Barbara Peters and Robert Rosenwald, owners of Poisoned Pen Books and Poisoned Pen Press in Scottsdale, Ariz., discussed both the mystery genre and the state of publishing in America. Their program takes a brief look at book and print technology past, present and future, and how electronic manuscript submissions, e-books, digital ink and wireless reading devices have affected the industry. The publishers also talk about the potential of digital rights management. Other trends in the industry, such as the interplay of Web and print media, the use of video trailers for books, the popularity of the graphic novel and gaming based on books are a part of the program. Peters and Rosenwald founded the Poisoned Pen Bookstore in 1989. Peters also serves as editor and Rosenwald as publisher of Poisoned Pen Press, which has published more than 100 authors and has more than 600 titles in print.

Amanda reads a short section from her new book, The Unthinkable:Who Survives When Disaster Strikes And Why. "Amanda Ripley takes Amanda reads a short section from her new book, The Unthinkable:Who Survives When Disaster Strikes And Why. "Amanda Ripley takes us on a sometimes stunning, sometimes sobering journey through disaster, using great stories and respected science to show why some prevail and others do not. The Unthinkable isn't merely a book about disaster; it's a book about survival — maybe yours." ——Gavin de Becker, author of the New York Times bestseller The Gift of Fear "With The Unthinkable, Amanda Ripley succeeds in two different ways. First, she covers, with great clarity and accuracy, the science of how the body and mind respond to crisis. In the process, she prescribes certain actions that will increase the chances of surviving a disaster. But it's the second aspect, the stories, that makes the book so compelling. These tales leave your viscera enflamed because they compel two questions: 'What would it feel like to go through that?' and 'Would I do the right thing and survive?' This is an irresistible book." —Robert M.
