Micheal Flaherty is Co-Founder and President of Walden Media, a Production Company, which focuses on films that entertain and educate. Through Walden, he has developed educational materials and programs that insight enthusiasm in the classroom and connect learning to entertainment. Prior to founding Walden Media in 2001, Flaherty designed innovative curricula in the Boston Public School System, which captured national attention from The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe. He designed the curriculum and taught for the Steppingstone Magnet Program for students in the worst public school cluster in Boston. As a result of his curriculum, the percentage of minority students in the troubled school district who gained admissions to Boston's elite exam schools increased by more than 1000%. As an author, Flaherty has been published in National Review, The Boston Business Journal and American Spectator. He also worked as a speechwriter for William Bulger, former President of the Massachusetts Senate, and Tom Reilly, the Massachusetts Attorney General. Flaherty is a graduate of Tufts University. He lives in Lexington, Massachusetts with his wife and three children.

Our children, Naomi and Nathaniel, attended Lee Academy Pilot School for a combined seven years. The Boston Public Schools (BPS) is threatening to close Lee Academy, citing poor school performance. Their claim is totally off the mark when it comes to our kids. Nathan and Mimi thrived at Lee Academy Pilot School -- because they had fantastic teachers and a caring community... which is what every parent wants for their children. While we don't live in Boston now, we enthusiastically support the efforts of our friends, fellow parents, and the educators who are challenging BPS and are fighting to save their school. ~ Sam and Tina Yoon
Wellesley superintendent apologizes for letting students on field trip pray at Islamic mosque WELLESLEY — Wellesley's superintendent of schools apologized today after Wellesley Middle School students were allowed to pray at an Islamic mosque during a May field trip. "It was not the intent for students to be able to participate in any of the religious practices," Superintendent Bella Wong wrote in a letter being sent to parents later today. "I extend my sincere apologies for the error that occurred and regret the offense it may have caused." Wong said the field trip to the Roxbury-based Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center — which faced opposition during its construction — was part of a social studies course called "Enduring Beliefs and the World Today," that includes introductions to a number of religions. During the course students visit a mosque, synagogue, attend a gospel performance, and meet with Hindus. "These activities provide experiences for our students that enhance their understanding of the curriculum," Wong wrote in the letter. "The purpose of the field trip was for students to observe a place of worship."
