The suddenly wheeling-and-dealing San Francisco 49ers addressed yet another problem area on Thursday, by signing free-agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the one-year, $3.5 million deal. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Edwards, 28, will fill the temporary hole left by the absence of Michael Crabtree. Edwards's figures to start alongside Crabtree once the third-year wide receiver returns from a foot injury, which is expected to sideline him throughout training camp. Edwards (6-3, 214) had 53 catches for 904 yards and seven touchdowns last year in his best season since 2007 when he set Cleveland's franchise records for yards (1289) and touchdowns (16). Edwards led the NFL in drops in 2008 with 16 and was traded from the Browns to the Jets during the 2009 season. The third overall pick in the 2005 draft, Edwards' talent is unquestioned, as is his ability to find off-the-field trouble. Edwards, who pleaded guilty in a drunk-driving case last month, has also been connected to a bar fight on Aug. 1 in Birmingham, Mich. One bouncer was stabbed in the neck with a fork and another was stabbed in the hand with a pocket knife in the altercation, which involved two of Edwards' cousins. Neither bouncer was seriously hurt. Prior to Edwards' signing, Josh Morgan and Ted Ginn had been San Francisco's first-team wideouts early in training camp. The pair combined for 56 catches last year. Braylon Edwards is 6'3" and 214 pounds, he's only 28 and has been to one Pro Bowl after racking up 80 receptions for 1,2890 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2007. Given those factoids, the current free agent should be in camp right now after signing a multi-year contract with one of the many wide receiver-needy teams in the NFL. But because he continues to prove that a career in football isn't among his top priorities, he remains in NFL purgatory. And given this latest incident, he may be there a while. According to the Birmingham Eccentric, Edwards could end up facing legal trouble for his role in a fight that broke out at a bar in Michigan over the weekend. Apparently two members of his entourage assaulted bar employees with knives and forks and while Edwards wasn't arrested, two of his cousins have been charged with felonious assault. The bar also claims that Edwards was involved and may have been an instigator. That sound you just heard was the incineration of any multi-year deal that Edwards was hoping to land this offseason. Now, let me cover my basis and be diplomatic for a second. Edwards wasn't arrested, nor was he charged with committing a crime. And in this country, you're thankfully innocent until proven guilty. Thus, Edwards is innocent at the moment. Whatever the outcome will be, the sports betting odds on NFL futures have already been posted. Burress caught a touchdown pass from Eli Manning with 35 seconds remaining in the 2008 Super Bowl to gain the victory over New England Patriots. Despite this, former teammate Brandon Jacobs, made it clear that there is "no chance" of a Plaxico return. For the Chicago Bears, Burress would open things up over the middle so tight end Greg Olsen can continue to blossom. For the Washington Redskins, Burress can provide a nice counterpart to Anthony Armstrong. The NY Jets might not be a shocking move considering that both Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes could both be free agents once things resume. But The Philadelphia Eagles are the favorites with DeSean Jackson's contract situation and the big-money extension he seeks, bringing in Burress for less money might clinch the deal.
