A mother shot and killed her four children before turning a gun on herself in a small town in Florida on Tuesday (May 15), authorities said. The shooting happened at a house in Port St. John, in Brevard County, about 15 miles from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. A spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's office identified the victims as four children aged 12, 13, 15 and 17. They were shot by their 33-year-old mother, Tonya Thomas, who then turned the gun on herself, Tod Goodyear said. All were shot with what appeared to be a handgun. Goodyear said a neighbor called police before dawn on Tuesday to report gunfire. When police arrived they found a fatally injured 17-year-old girl in the front yard of the house, which is in a quiet neighborhood of single family residences. More shots were heard inside the house as a SWAT team arrived and entered through a back entrance. A neighbor told police that three of the children had banged on his door shortly before 5 am, Goodyear said. Tonya Thomas then appeared at the neighbor's door and ordered the children to return home. Goodyear said police had been called to the house on several occasions in the past and the 15-year-old child, a boy, was arrested last month for domestic violence against his mother. Thomas's husband, the father of all of the children, moved out of the house a few months ago, he added.

NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with space shuttle Discovery on top will fly above sections of the Central Florida coastline and Brevard County on Tuesday, April 17, starting at about 7 am EDT. This will be the final time Discovery will take to the skies over Florida's Space Coast as the spacecraft will be headed to its new home at the Smithsonian in Virginia. The Space Coast flyover is expected to head south from Kennedy down the coastline past Patrick Air Force Base and then head back up north along the coast to Kennedy where it will make a pass over the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and shuttle runway one last time before the SCA heads out of the area. Discovery will be transported to Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va., and then offloaded and transferred to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., for permanent public display on April 19. Before landing at Dulles on Tuesday, the SCA and Discovery are expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area between 10-11 am While travelling north to Dulles, the SCA is expected generally to fly up the coastline in Georgia and the Carolinas before taking a more inland route over Virginia. The exact route and timing of the flight depend on weather and operational constraints. If the flight is postponed for any reason, an additional notice will be released.

TITUSVILLE, Fla. - A Brevard County father and his girlfriend were arrested Thursday on allegations of caging the man's 12-year-old son -- who weighs 40 pounds -- in a closet and keeping him locked in a bathroom for weeks at a time. Michael Marshal, the boy's father and his girlfriend Sharon Glass were arrested on three counts of aggravated child abuse (unlawful caging of a child) and aggravated child neglect. Titusville police said officers went to a home around 6:30 pm after receiving a report of child abuse and found the boy locked in a bathroom and lying on the floor.

MELBOURNE, Florida -- The Brevard County Sheriff's Department released from their communications center in Rockledge the dramatic video of the police chase and 911 today regarding the shooting and killing of 52-year-old Brevard County Sheriff's Deputy Barbara Pill. While being chased by a helicopter and cruisers from both the Melbourne Police Department and Brevard County Sheriff's Office, 22-year-old Brandon Lee Bradley overturned his white Ford truck on Turtle Mound Road after the Melbourne Police Department successfully deployed stop sticks.
MELBOURNE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Officials say a Brevard County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot after a traffic stop while investigating a motel burglary. Sheriff's officials say Deputy Barbara Pill was shot late Tuesday morning while investigating a report that someone was stealing furniture at a Melbourne Econo Lodge. The shooting happened around 11:40 am at the intersection of John Rodes Blvd. and Silver Heron Drive in Melbourne ( map below). Two suspects fled in a vehicle which went into a ditch during a chase with police and deputies. The suspects were arrested and were being interviewed by investigators. The deputy was pronounced dead at a hospital. "It's still very difficult to accept that someone so very violent, someone with such a disregard for life, would do something like this," said Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker during a news conference late Tuesday afternoon. Brandon Lee Bradley, the man believed to be the shooter, has a criminal record including more than half-a-dozen felony charges levied against him since 2007. Bradley, 22, had four active warrants out for his arrest and a fugitive squad was actively searching for him. The other suspect, 19-year-old Andrea Kirshner, has a record including minor crimes of larceny theft and battery.
