The Bridge over the River Kwai (French: Le Pont de la Rivière Kwai) is a novel by Pierre Boulle, published in French in 1952 and English translation by Xan Fielding in 1954. The story is fictional but uses the construction of the Burma Railway, in 1942-43, as its historical setting. The novel deals with the plight of World War II British prisoners of war forced by the Imperial Japanese Army to build a bridge for the "Death Railway", so named because of the large number of prisoners and conscripts who died during its construction. The novel won France's Prix Sainte-Beuve in 1952. The largely fictitious plot is based on the building in 1943 of one of the railway bridges over the Mae Klong—renamed Khwae Yai in the 1960s—at a place called Tha Ma Kham, five kilometers from the Thai town of Kanchanaburi. The Khwae Yai River (Thai: แม่น้ำแควใหญ่), also known as the Si Sawat, is a river in western Thailand. It flows for about 380 kilometres through Sangkhla Buri, Si Sawat, and Mueang Districts of Kanchanaburi Province, where it merges with the Khwae Noi to form the Mae Klong River at Pak Phraek subdistrict.Video by Alfred with the help of Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech, Mosta, Malta. © jasalf5959 - 2010 ===================================== Our Youtube Channels are: 1) jasalf5959 MASTER Link: (Malta related videos) www.youtube.com 2) malpen04 My Choice series 1 MASTER Link: (Music videos) www.youtube.com 3) malpen04 My Choice series 2 MASTER Link: (Music videos) www.youtube.com 4 ...

The film deals with the situation of British prisoners of war during World War II who are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway. Their instinct is to sabotage the bridge but, under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson, they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances. At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he bravely endures torture rather than compromise his principles for the benefit of the Japanese commandant Saito. He is an honorable but arrogant man, who is slowly revealed to be a deluded obsessive. He convinces himself that the bridge is a monument to British character, but actually is a monument to himself, and his insistence on its construction becomes a subtle form of collaboration with the enemy. Unknown to him, the Allies have sent a mission into the jungle, led by Warden and an American, Shears, to blow up the bridge. Written by alfiehitchie [IMDB.COM] Release: 18 December 1957 Running Time: 161 min Awards: Won 7 Oscars. Another 23 wins & 5 nominations Producer: Sam Spiegel Director: David Lean Writer: Pierre Boulle, Michael Wilson, Carl Foreman Cast: William Holden, Jack Hawkins, Alec Guinness, Sessue Hayakawa Genre: Adventure, Drama, War Domestic Total Gross: $27 million [IMDB.COM][BOXOFFICEMOJO.COM]
