8/10/91, Al Fook's Orchestra played at The Greenville Mississippi Club at 319 W. 119th Street. Al had played trombone with Jay McShann in the 1940s. He's listed in the personnel on the reissue album: Early Bird, that has a broadcast of McShann on side two. I met Floyd McDaniel in Al's band at that club. Al's band usually featured Count Basie's and Thad Jones music, a favorite of Horace "Smitty" Smith's who is seen conducting the band on the float, but we had James Brown in the book too. Al's son played the drums in the band. We were on Dr. Marjorie Stewart Joyner's float. We all got to meet her before the parade. I would have liked to talk to her longer but we had to get going. On my CD: Fifteen Years of Jazz, I've got the tune Moten Swing as recorded by this band. It could be a really swinging group. A lot of musicians played in it as time went on.

The parade is one of Chicago's biggest events. A million and a half people line the streets for a long line of marchers and floats that number as many as 75000 in a promenade that is seen by 25 million people in a broadcast beamed across the country. The ANVIL had key spot in the celebration. It was the pace car for Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois. We say pace car, because it's an election year and the Governor spent much of his time out of the car walking the streets and shaking hands while the ANVIL kept pace down the center of the broad boulevard.
