Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the UBC Buddhism and Contemporary Society Program. Based on the religious thought of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Shin Buddhism, the largest sect of Japanese Buddhism, this presentation explores the world of religious dialogue. Specifically, how can one understand the particularity of religious thought within the larger scope of religious diversity. Through examining case studies of teaching and learning, one can begin to see how Shin Buddhism provides a way to appreciate differences among religious perspectives while also finding common ground. Professor Unno is currently Assistant Professor of East Asian Religions at the University of Oregon, specializing in Japanese Buddhism. He is also an ordained Shin Buddhist priest. He received his PhD in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University in 1994, and has since taught at Brown Univesrity, Carleton College, and Kyoto University. He has published and lectured on Pure Land Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Psychology of Religion. UBC's Buddhism and Contemporary Society Program lectures are made possible by the generous support of The Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute of Asian Research and Department of Asian Studies.

Feng Shui Conference I, London UK, 24th October 2009 (4/9) - the Feng Shui Society Conference (www.fengshuisociety.org.uk ) Speaker: Feng shui - Psychology of Place (Scientific Feng Shui) by Jan CISEK Feng shui is the original Psychology of Place dating back 4000 years, and there are countless examples of its efficacy. However it is only within the last 50 years, with the development of Environmental Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics that the effects of feng shui could be studied by western science. The time is now ripe for Environmental Psychology to learn from feng shui and vice versa. This presentation will demonstrate the clear overlap between Environment Psychology and feng shui, and show the scientific applications of feng shui in your life. You will also learn how feng shui works as a basic neuro-feedback mechanism and how your home acts as a metaphor for your life and a mirror for your self. More importantly, you will be given the key to deciphering its message -- and learning how to use the power of feng shui to positively influence your life. Jan Cisek is a London based feng shui expert and trainer who's been instrumental in making feng shui popular in the UK through his programs and co-founding the Feng Shui Society. He's the creator of Scientific Feng Shui. This seminal series of videos was recorded during a 2-day colloquium on Buddhism and Science at Oxford University involving leading scientists, philosophers, Buddhist scholars and Buddhist practitioners in deep debate on the perceived convergence of modern science (relativity theory, quantum mechanics, systems biology, cognitive psychology, clinical science) with some of the traditional ideas of Buddhism (anti-metaphysical stance, interdependence, emptiness, no-self). The colloquium was organised by Vesna Wallace (Numata Professor of Buddhist Studies at Oxford), Denis Noble (Emeritus Professor of Physiology) and Alan Wallace (Director of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies). In addition to the introduction, there are 11 30-minute recordings. The debates are lively and critical. The complete set of recordings is on www.voicesfromoxford.org Click on Events, then on Buddhism and Science.

Anne Harrington of Harvard lectures about the relationship between Tibetan Buddhism and the human brain. She refers to the research of the University of Wisconsin's Richard Davidson on the brain functions of Buddhist monks during long periods of meditation, and she talks about the fascination with the Eastern style of meditation of the 1960s and 1970s counterculture. Hosted by Center for the Study of Religion and Psychology at Boston University's Danielsen Institute on September 15, 2008.

Dharmavidya speaks about Zen Therapy Weekend
David Brazier introduces the conference . Other centeredness, a principle derived from Buddhist psychology, transcends the boundaries of psychological schools and religious categories. That mental and spiritual well-being should be a function of the quality of ones engagement with and ability to appreciate others is not exclusive to any one school or tradition. Here many contemporary concerns converge. Issues in ethics have other-relatedness at their core. Issues in ecology have our concern for the object-world in view. The practice of mindfulness raises the question 'mindful of what?' Yet psychology as practiced is generally heavily focussed on 'self'. In this conference we will present how focusing attention on what is not self - on others - is the key to a change of paradigm in therapeutic and spiritual practice.
This is a clip from Lewis Lancaster's Burke Lecture: Buddhism in the Global Age of Technology (April, 2008, UCSD). The entire lecture is available online via UCSD-TV, Youtube, and other sources. I use this clip in various settings, including my (David Peterzell) course on Sensation and Perception at UCSD, and in presentations on Integrative Psychology. Lancaster (UC Berkeley emeritus) does a remarkable job of synthesizing Buddhist philosophy of perception and relating it to cognitive neuroscience. I believe that this type of material belongs in textbooks on perception, alongside Democritus, Socrates (and Plato), Descartes, Gustav Fechner, Matrix philosopy, and more.

As a psychologist interested and familiar with buddhism it is my aim to share my compassion and wish to help others with their questions and problems. From a very open stance I share my insights, questions and other stuff on psychology, buddhism and philosophy. I invite viewers to send questions or discussion topics. Is it right to be called a cyber psychologist in doing what I do? kind regards, Geoffrey. I have no intent to gaining any money, just want to (humbly) share my points of view on life and interaction with others. My further interest is consciousness and all its aspects. ;)

Consciousness is that factor, known for ages by Buddhists, proven by science. Quantum theory is next. Wave and particle duality and uncertainty. Fantastic visuals exemplify again what Buddhist cosmology has known for ages: we are made of reality and our consciousness also alters that reality. Observer and observed are concomitants. Trading and investment strategies are undergoing a major paradigm shift. The present unorecedented market volatility is ample proof of this ongoing transition which is part of a major cycle in financial history. Ignore this cycle at your peril. Understand what is happening and reap the rewards. There is opportunity to make big money, just as there is the chance to lose big unless you understand yourself and what is going on right now.. The Buddhist Trader helps you to understand the new psychology and prepare your own to be in seamless alignment with this shift which is going to affect the way we trade and invest for decades to come.
