Simon, Mel, Marc and I had already booked on the slow boat to take us down the river over two full days to Luang Prabang but after much discussion we decided to pay a little extra and take the bus for one full day. When booking onto the bus we were told it takes 10 hours, 14 hours later we realised that people find it easy to lie to you when they are selling you something. Our tuk tuk pulls into the bus station and we all hope that the bus we see is not ours, it has bald tires, no aircondidtioning and the seats are made for small Asian people not big white men (thats what they call Marc here!!). There was even a man who took his chicken with him on the bus! We were the only tourists on the bus and luckily some of the few who were not sick. The road which we were told was 90 percent complete was probably 90 percent incomplete which meant that about 13 hours of the 14 was very bumpy. When stopping for toilet breaks we had to just go at the side of the road, alright for the men, us girls all had to scurry off and try to find a little bush or something to give us some privicy. On one toilet break ...

Entry from: Siem Reap, Cambodia Entry Title: "Bumpy bus, smooth tuktuk, gentile touts" Entry: "Have I mentioned its still raining periodically? Wet season officially over? Not quite just yet. Woke up lazy this morning for the 10.30am bus to SR. Raining. Going to miss Blue Lime, its really something else. Waited until 10.15am for our pickup and rang the bus company a bit concerned and at 10.27 were picked up in a tuktuk for the 10.30am bus. The bus leaves about 10.50 am. (keep forgetting about Asian concepts of punctuality) Bus seats a bit broken, Jens seat is in permanent recline, but the aircon works and the Cambodian music isn't too loud, some of it is quite pleasant in fact. On the journey I hear the male response to a song that I happened to watch on a youtube clip just a fortnight or so ago in my research. Same chorus, tacky video. Whoever says the road is good must come from outer nowhereseville, cause its pretty bumpy all the way. One section bangs the bus around so much even the driver goes 'ow' a few times. A Canadian guy sitting behind us with his family reminds that some years ago the trip used to take two days. Madhi our tuktuk driver from Blue Lime 'cornered' us into booking Paramount and having seen our other choice -Sorya Bus, go whizzing past a few times I think he did us a favour ...

Entry from: Tarutao National Park and Ko Lipe, Thailand Entry Title: "Same, same, but different" Entry: "We took a night bus from Ipoh, Malaysia to Hatyai, Thailand. This coach was the most comfortable I have been on in my life. There was complementary water, a blanket (absolutely necessary because the bus drivers try to keep the passengers cryogenically frozen for the duration of the ride), and the seats reclined almost flat. The bus even shuttled us through customs (there is a 500m gap between Malay and Thai customs). Upon arriving in Hatyai, we were greeted by the crooked tourist industry of this city. There are minibus drivers everywhere who desperately try to get you to fork out extra money to use their bus service. So, when we tried to get to the bus station we were taken for a ride (albeit free) to their booking office where we could take a bus for twice the price. No thanks. Finally, we took the local transportaion to the main bus terminal. Local transportation consists of two benches under the covered bed in the back of small pickups. It's actually quite convenient to get around as there are so many, and you can just wave them down like a taxi. The problem is when you don't want a tuk-tuk. Just because you are walking they assume you are in need of a ride and honk at you. Anyhoo... We ...

The hotel that I am at is very quiet and there is no common area like you get in the hostels so you don't really meet anyone. I am off to book a bus to Saigon (or for the new generation of people, Ho Chi Minh City) for tomorrow so that I can get out of here! On my way down to the travel agents to book my bus I had to walk past Tu Anh's Peace restaurant and she was sitting outside. Tu Anh shouted "Peter where were you last night?", wow she remembered my name. So I went over to talk to her and told her that I had tried the V Cafe last night and that her food was much better so I would come back and eat here tonight. On the way back from the travel agents after booking my bus for tomorrow, I was approached by an Easy rider (bike driver) and asked if I would like a tour around Da Lat and we agreed a price of 200000 dong (£6.70) for the rest of the day. My driver's name was "Buddha" as he said he had been nicknamed this due to his smile and pot belly. Our first stop today was Truc Lam Temple where he dropped me off and left me to my own devices to have a look around the temple, the ...

Jodhpur - Fairly busy unremarkable city, apart from a couple of things. Firstly, its called the "Blue City" as a huge amount of the buildings are washed with this light blue paint, really cool sight from the top of the fort. Second, the incredible Mehangir Fort. Its up so so high above the city, dominates from absolutely everywhere. Its absolutely vast and confusing. Some of the most ridiculously lavish rooms you could imagine, with colour and pattern covering every inch, shame my camera seemed to do a poor job... Incredible views from the top too. Well worth seeing + an audio tour which sounded like you were listening to Salman Rushdie describing their opium fuelled nights of dance and entertainment, or bloody battles. Jaisalmer - About 250km west of Jodhpur, right in the heart of the Thar Desert. Oh my god, HOT. 47 degrees each day, not felt anything like it. Pretty interesting to be in a city in the middle of the desert, and its all completely sand-coloured buildings, so looked pretty unique, the effects a luttle bit ruined by almost everything being a tourist shop, guesthouse, or bus booking travel agent.
