»THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE« AND A MESSAGE FOR ANGELA MERKEL, a mini-film by Romuald Karmakar (September 2010). »THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE« is the extended name (and translation) of a traditional coffeshop (»kafeneion«) called »To Byzantion« in Nea Smyrni, Athens (Greece), located on El. Venizelou-Street next to the main square. The owner of the place, Vassilis Mavromatis, belongs to the Greek Community which was forced to exile in the beginning of the 20th Century from Minor Asia. Many of the refugees settled in Nea (New) Smyrni (Izmir), a southern district of the capital. This »kafeneion« is one of the few remaining places in this area where drinks are still reasonably priced, an imperial stronghold against globalized designs. Lipon, pame! BYZANTINE ROMAN EMPIRE - The Byzantine Empire or Eastern Roman Empire, was the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople, and ruled by Emperors. It was called the Roman Empire, and also as Romania (Greek: Ῥωμανία, Rhōmanía), by its inhabitants and its neighbours. As the distinction between "Roman Empire" and "Byzantine Empire" is purely a modern convention, it is not possible to assign a date of separation, but an important point is the Emperor Constantine I's transfer in 324 of the capital from Nicomedia (in Anatolia) to Byzantium on the Bosphorus, which became Constantinople (alternatively "New Rome"). The Empire remained one of the most powerful economic, cultural, and military forces in Europe, despite setbacks and territorial losses, especially during the RomanPersian and ByzantineArab Wars. The Empire recovered during the Macedonian dynasty, rising again to become the pre-eminent power in the Eastern Mediterranean by the late 10th century. After 1071 however, much of Asia Minor, the Empire's heartland, was lost to the Seljuk Turks. The Komnenian restoration regained some ground and briefly re-established dominance in the 12th century, but declined again under their successors. The Empire received a mortal blow in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade, when it was dissolved and divided into competing Byzantine Greek and Latin realms. Despite the eventual recovery of Constantinople and re-establishment of the Empire in 1261, under the ...

The year is 1174 and the Holy Land does not know peace. While the first crusade and the capture of Jerusalem as having occurred 70 years ago, the struggle for control of the Holy Land continues to soak the sand of the desert with blood. With the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Antioch helped both by orders of chivalry, the Western Crusaders now hold the power over a large part of the Mediterranean coast. The Crusaders, however, thought it would be a good challenge to expand the borders with Egypt and the Turks, fighting with all their might to keep these lands out of the hands of the infidels.

Byzantium under the Macedonians The Byzantine Empire reached its height under the Macedonian emperors of the late 9th, 10th, and early 11th centuries, when it gained control over the Adriatic Sea, southern Italy, and all of the territory of the tsar Samuel. The cities of the empire expanded, and affluence spread across the provinces because of the new-found security. The population rose, and production increased, stimulating new demand while also helping to encourage trade. Culturally, there was considerable growth in education and learning (the "Macedonian Renaissance"). Ancient texts were preserved and patiently re-copied. Byzantine art flourished, and brilliant mosaics graced the interiors of the many new churches.[1] Though the empire was significantly smaller than during the reign of Justinian, it was also stronger, as the remaining territories were less geographically dispersed and more politically and culturally integrated. Internal developments Although traditionally attributed to Basil I (867886), initiator of the Macedonian dynasty, the "Byzantine Renaissance" has been more recently ascribed to the reforms of his predecessor, Michael III (842867) and his wife's counsellor, the erudite Theoktistos. The latter in particular favoured culture at the court, and, with a careful financial policy, steadily increased the gold reserves of the Empire. The rise of the Macedonian dynasty coincided with internal developments which strengthened the religious unity of the ...
The Empire preserved Romano-Hellenistic traditions,[6] but due to the increasing predominance of the Greek language, it was usually known to most of its western and northern contemporaries as the Empire of the Greeks.[n 3] The use of the term Empire of the Greeks (Latin: Imperium Graecorum) in the West to refer to the Eastern Roman Empire also implied a rejection of the empire's claim to be the Roman Empire. The claims of the Eastern Roman Empire to Roman inheritance had been actively contested in the West at the time of the Roman Empress Irene of Athens, due to the coronation of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor year 800, by Pope Leo III, who needing help against enemies in Rome, saw the throne of the Roman Empire as vacant (lacking a male occupant). Whenever the Popes or the rulers of the West made use of the name Roman to refer to the eastern Roman Emperors, they preferred the term Imperator Romaniæ instead of Imperator Romanorum, a title that Westerners maintained applied only to Charlemagne and his successors.
"The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire" Edward N. Luttwak, Senior Associate, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington, DC Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Edward N. Luttwak for a conversation on his new book, The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire." Luttwak discusses the logic of strategy; the distinctive features of Byzantine strategy with its balance of diplomacy, intelligence, and military power; the institutional and ideological foundations that account for the eight hundred year survival of Byzantium, and the implications of this record for other great powers with diminished resources confronting many adversaries. The conversation concludes with a comparison of Rome, Byzantium, and the United States. globetrotter.berkeley.edu globetrotter.berkeley.edu conversationswithhistory.typepad.com www.thenewpress.com
Hey everyone, this is a really quick look into the Byzantine world, and it's most prominent general, Belisarius. Like it's stated, this is a very condensed and simplified overview; talking in depth about Byzantium could take hours. Please enjoy the video, and be sure to keep an eye open for my next battle commentary. (And coming soon, [hopefully] a video used with the cinematic editor that follows the actions of an average soldier in the heat of combat.)

was a Byzantine Emperor of the 12th century who reigned over a crucial turning point in the history of Byzantium and the Mediterranean. Eager to restore his empire to its past glories as the superpower of the Mediterranean world, Manuel pursued an energetic and ambitious foreign policy. In the process he made alliances with the Pope and the resurgent west, invaded Italy, successfully handled the passage of the dangerous Second Crusade through his empire, and established a Byzantine protectorate over the Crusader kingdoms of Outremer. Facing Muslim advances in the Holy Land, he made common cause with the Kingdom of Jerusalem and participated in a combined invasion of Fatimid Egypt. Manuel reshaped the political maps of the Balkans and the east Mediterranean, placing the kingdoms of Hungary and Outremer under Byzantine hegemony and campaigning aggressively against his neighbours both in the west and in the east. However, towards the end of his reign Manuel's achievements in the east attacking a well-defended Seljuk position.

He became a Roman soldier as a young man, serving in the bodyguard of the Emperor Justin I. Following Justin's death in 527, the new Emperor, Justinian I, appointed Belisarius to command the Byzantine army in the east to deal with incursions from the Sassanid Empire. He quickly proved himself an able and effective commander, defeating the larger Sassanid army through superior generalship. In June 530 during the Iberian War, he led the Byzantines to a stunning victory over the Sassanids in the Battle of Dara, followed by a close defeat at the Battle of Callinicum on the Euphrates in 531. This led to the negotiation of an "Endless Peace" with the Persians and heavy tributes for years in exchange for a peace treaty. In 532, he was the highest ranking military officer in the Imperial capital of Constantinople when the Nika riots (among factions of chariot racing fans) broke out in the city and nearly resulted in the overthrow of Justinian. Against the Vandals - Against the Ostrogoths - Against Slavs and Bulgars under Zabergan crossed the Danube River .
was a Byzantine Emperor. who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine Empire. He was in power for over thirty years, from October 5, 610 to February 11, 641 and was the responsible for abandoning the use of Latin in favour of the Greek language in official documents, further Hellenising the Empire. His rise to power began in 608, when he and his father, the viceregal Exarch of Africa, successfully led a revolt against the unpopular usurper Phocas. Heraclius' reign was marked by several military campaigns. Even when he seized power from Phocas he immediately had to fight the invasion of the Empire by the Sassanians who were ruled by the Persian king Khosrau Parvez. The first battles of the campaign ended in defeat and the Persian army fought their way to the gate of Constantinople. However protected by a strong navy and impenetrable walls Heraclius was able to avoid total defeat and set upon a campaign to rebuild and reform the military. In 622 he left the capital at the head of a new stronger army and was able over a number of years to crush the Persians ending what had been an on and off conflict for over 800 years. After his victory over the Sassanid Empire he faced a new threat with the rising power of Islam uniting the Arab tribes. He was the first Emperor to engage the Muslims
