Remember how frustrating it was during the Presidential campaigning to hear people and their opinions frequently reduced to demographic numbers? This project is my response to the wide spread media coverage of faulty poll results that led to African Americans being widely blamed for backing a successful ballot measure to overturn the California Supreme Court's decision allowing same-sex marriage. For months it appeared African Americans were overwhelmingly in agreement with right-wing conservatives that marriage is not a civil right for everyone until Loyola's Levy Center for the Study of Los Angeles did a far more extensive poll and found the number of African American supporters of Prop 8 was significantly lower 57%, not much higher than Latinos who voted for Prop 8 at about 53% and whites who helped pass the amendment in numbers of about 50%.

Our film begins in the home of Orin and Bernardo on election night, November 4, 2008. Although poll surveys predict Proposition 8 is headed for defeat, voter results come in with a surprising outcome. California voters, by a 52 percent vote, approve Proposition 8, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. With the political stage set, we take a look back five years earlier where we see these two men at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Refusing to let a simple marriage certificate stand in the way of publicly expressing their commitment, Orin and Bernardo celebrate life together by inviting their closest friends to their... funeral. Instead of a solemn event, the couple surprises their guests with the unveiling of a 12-foot marble monument inscribed with their achievement that they walked this earth with a lifetime of love and commitment to each other. This all-consuming and symbolic event forces Orin and Bernardo to examine their lives in such a way that all aspects of who they are, both then and now, are revealed. They share what it was like growing up gay in 1950s and 1960s America and how it presented an extra set of challenges. Intertwining themes of love, marriage, and politics we continue telling the story through documentary footage, candid interviews and historical photos and documents. Our story delivers humor, political commentary, the occasional touch of drama, and a deeply personal look at Kennedy and Puccios dedication to one ...

In front of supreme court building on Mac allister san francisco Please await SUpreme court decision on Same sex Marriage which was overturned with prop 8 Results: Prop 8 upheld. Marriage only between a man and a woman In California. 18 000 marriages performed while it was legal still valid.
Prop 8 was upheld by the Supreme Court today. This is a big setback: although the existing marriages will remain, the ban will continue to prevent any new marriages. But the fight's not over: we're bringing it back to the ballot, probably as soon as next year. The most effective way to prepare is by having conversations. You need to talk to everyone know know -- EVERYONE -- about why marriage equality is personally important to you. We know that we'll win this fight soon; working together, we can turn this difficult news into an eventual victory. Full transcript of video: Hi, I'm Matt from Stop8.org with breaking news about marriage equality. The California Supreme Court just ruled on Prop 8, the marriage ban, and the results are mixed. On one hand, the 36000 people who got married last year can stay married. But the court also ruled that nobody else can get married -- so if youre like me and you missed your chance, you're out of luck. For now. This is a setback -- but its actually not as bad as it sounds, because of something great that weve learned from our recent victories in other states: the more people talk about marriage equality, the faster public support grows. That means that even when the news is bad, it's still a great opportunity to start conversations; and each conversation brings us closer to winning the fight. So -- whats next? Were bringing it back to the ballot, probably in about a year. Organizations like Courage Campaign and Equality California are ...

Californians answer the question, "What would you say to the Supreme Court?" when asked by Valerie Paget and Tracie Jones as they march from Los Angeles to San Francisco to protest the results of Proposition 8 at the California Supreme Court.
After watching Harvey Milk, I know understand the meaning of life in the fast lane, put your seat belt, it is going to be a BUMPY RIDE FOLKS! Thirty years ago on election night Harvey Milk gave an electrifying speech at the "No on Proposition 6" headquarters in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco. The results were in: Proposition 6 was going down to defeat. In 1978, Proposition 6 ( "the Briggs Initiative") was the California ballot measure aimed at preventing gay people and supporters from working as teachers in public schools. Harvey Milk was a San Francisco city council member who had been in office for a mere ten months. Through his role in this campaign he proved himself to be more than just an "elected gay official." He was a leader at the height of his powers. When introduced to the crowd that night by Sally Gearhart (another important figure in the fight against Proposition 6), the response to Harvey was thunderous. He proceeded to give one of the greatest speeches of his relatively short political career. Although there are many parallels to be made between Proposition 6 (1978) and Proposition 8 (2008) there are also many differences. Unlike Proposition 8, Proposition 6 had a name, a face, and a personality as its figurehead in the person of State Senator John Briggs. Briggs came across as a seemingly opportunistic and somewhat ineffectual politician, but regardless of his baboonery, the issue that he and his supporters tapped into -- "gay teachers" -- was ...

November 12, 2008 Season 6 Episode 48 Ellen recommends everyone to listen what Keith Olberman has to say about Prop 8 Ban Gay Marriage in California
Protestors angry over their failure to defeat Proposition 8, laid the blame for the results at the feet of the LDS church and the Catholic Church.
Keith Olbermann makes a great comment on the backwardsness of the rescinding of already granted rights of gays to marry. The proposition 8 wording is just like the "Separate but Equal" legislation of the 60's. I am not gay, and being in NY I am about as far away from California as you can get in this country, so there is no personal agenda here. ModCollectibles.com
Next Anti-Prop 8 Protest Set for Chicago Following Saturday night's successful protest against California Proposition 8 leader James Dobson, when some 500+ came out despite miserable weather, Chicago LGBT activists have set a follow-up protest for 12:30 PM, Saturday, November 15th at the Federal Plaza, corner of Adams and Dearborn Streets, Chicago. Chicago's protest is part of a nationwide series of simultaneous protests at precisely the same hour on that day -- in over 80 cities and in all 50 states -- coordinated through the website www.jointheimpact.com Although last Tuesday's vote in California prompted officials in that state to cease issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, it's an open question whether the Supreme Court in that state will confirm the ballot referendum or throw it out. Officially, their decision will probably hinge on a legal technicality -- whether or not the referendum language broke a vaguely worded provision of the state constitution that says that referenda cannot be overly-broad in the matters they cover. However, the real reason for the court's decision will probably have much more to do with the amount of protest heat that LGBT people and our allies can generate outside of the courtrooms. While courts are always loath to admit that public protest influences their decisions, some of the most important progressive decisions have in fact been the direct results of such public protest. A large women's movement in the streets of America ...

I feel like this past week has been a week for me to just speak out and be heard. Whoever hears or reads my message and has some sort of opinion about the topic means that I did my job right. One voice matters like Obama said. That woman was fired upand it took her and a few others to make Obama fired upListen Americayou wont silence my LGBTQQI communitywere fired upwere ready. WHY did I VOTE FOR OBAMA? It was a clear choice for me and I know he was the right candidate for this position. However, he is against gay marriage, but has stated: "...he would support civil unions between gay and lesbian couples, as well as letting individual states determine if marriage between gay and lesbian couples should be legalized." Having said that, I still respect the man for his belief, but has said he would late states determine that! I respect Obama for that and that is why I voted for him! My thoughts after the results are in. Obama, Proposition 8 in California, Amendment 2 in Florida. A bittersweet victory. The election of Obama is great, but the passing of Prop 8 and Amendment 2 leaves a bitter taste. My results information comes from vote.sos.ca.gov enight.dos.state.fl.us
Here's a piece from CNN, earlier in the year. Earlier tonight, in addition to choosing the next President of the United States, voters in California voted on Proposition 8, which would redefine marriage strictly as a union between a man an a woman, effectively overturning an earlier decision by the California Supreme Court recognizing same-sex marriages as legal and valid. In this election, this was an issue that fell to the wayside, but it's still an important one, and I can only hope that California voted "no" on Prop 8 (Arizona has already approved a similar measure). This time tomorrow, we'll know the results.
this was filmed before results were posted.
If Prop. 8 passes, some say that marriage licenses will stop being issued to same-sex couples as soon as the election results are certified. Some experts say couples who have already married will remain married.

Shocking! I have been wondering who this undecided voters were! WIth the 2008 Presidential Election just barely more than a week away, I was shocked to discover that one of my circle of friends is an undecided voter! Last week at dinner, I was giving him a hard time and said "I suppose you're voting yes on Proposition 8." The topic came up because the 3 of us we seated next to a table of 15 lesbians. (Proposition 8 overturns gay marriage in California.) He told me that he was voting no on Prop 8 because he would not deny though rights to his sister. I told him that I was relieved, but that I thought that based on a statement he made about a month ago about voting for McCain. He corrected me and told me that he did not say that he "was" voting for McCain, but rather that he was "leaning" toward McCain. He put himself at about 60% likely to vote for McCain at that time, but as Sarah Palin has showed herself repeatedly to be so unprepared to be Vice President, and the fact that John McCain has a history of health problems and is over 70 years old, he was about 50/50 on McCain and Obama. Well, finally a bit over a week ago, a nudge came in the form of General Colin Powell. My friend was in the Navy during the Clinton administration and was a registered Republican at the time. He felt that Clinton allowed the American military to be "pushed around" in many parts of the country. Let's just say, the opinion of General Colin Powell went a long way with him. Powell is a long time Republican and has known John McCain for decades. If that isn't enough to support McCain, then why should he? I hope that my friend is a reasonably typical example of the "swing vote." If so, I have great HOPE for this election. Assuming we get a fair election, people vote the way they are telling the pollsters that they are, and all the votes get counted... we could be looking at President Barack Obama! What an exciting political era we are about to enter into if that happens. OK, I have to stop. I don't want to think about it too much, as if it does not happen it will already be a great disappointment. So, I am mentally preparing myself, taking a deep breath, and awaiting the results... Thanks for reading. Read all you want, I'll write more. -Chris Corsello October 2008
