The kids from Carson City Stand Tall Don't Fall youth group wanted to thank the stores, restaurants and bars that cared enough not to sell alcohol to minors so they decided to give the establishments that said "no" and passed their compliance checks in 2009 a Christmas Stocking full of candy and other goodies. The compliance checks are conducted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office by sending underage youths in to try to get served. To pass the test, all the server has to do is ask for their ID. The youth will hand over their real ID that clearly says that they are under 21 and the clerk then refuses to service them. Easy? Apparently not... the recent test found 7 out of 30 checked failed in June 2010. Not encouraging.

I had so much FUN creating this project! Every Christmas Season I try to do something big for a Gingerbread Contest, and as the season approached I didn't have any good ideas at all. Nada. Then all of a sudden, the idea of the Gingerbread family in their kitchen, cooking up some gingerbread cookies, came into mind, then, as I drafted the idea on paper, the whole story unfolded.... Then, it evolved into telling the story with a video, because I just had to figure out a way to make it a permanent thing, because after all that work, I just knew that the finished product would only last a day! I had no idea how hard it would be to make this, at first. I had never made sugar glass before, and I started 2 weeks early and learned all i could about making it. Then a week before, I started my first batch. So many foibles, and errors on my part, the sugar glass wouldn't come out of the mold, or shattered, or was the wrong thickness. The first prototype of the whole project, melted in 2 days! So I tried again, the second prototype, the fireplace wall, melted again, but I learned! The third attempt, I sprayed each element with acrylic spray as i did it, to prevent ...

Born John Smith Hurt in Teoc, Carroll County, Mississippi and raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt learned to play guitar at age 9. He spent much of his youth playing old time music for friends and dances, earning a living as a farm hand into the 1920s. In 1923 he partnered with the fiddle player Willie Narmour as a substitute for his regular partner Shell Smith. When Narmour got a chance to record for Okeh Records as a prize for winning first place in a 1928 fiddle contest, Narmour recommended John Hurt to Okeh Records producer Tommy Rockwell. After auditioning "Monday Morning Blues" at his home, he took part in two recording sessions, in Memphis and New York City (see Discography below). The "Mississippi" tag was added by Okeh as a sales gimmick. After the commercial failure of the resulting records, and Okeh Records going out of business during the Great Depression, Hurt returned to Avalon and obscurity, working as a sharecropper and playing local parties and dances. In 1963, however, a folk musicologist, Tom Hoskins, inspired by the recordings, was able to locate Hurt near Avalon, Mississippi.
