A first-person view of construction that is going on while traversing the Sagamore Bridge over Cape Cod Canal just prior to noon on St. Patrick's Day. The construction has caused minor delays as only one lane of traffic is allowed in each direction. Work being completed includes removal of stone caps from bridge parapet walls, demolition of the old concrete walls and new ones formed, stone and concrete curbing, electrical conduits for bridge lighting, and removal of water stop membrane below the old pavement. Plans are to complete the construction by late spring.

Firefighters from the Wareham, Onset and Bourne fire departments battled several large brush fires along Rt. 25 on the Wareham/ Bourne town border Tuesday (02-09-10) afternoon around 2:00 PM. According to a Bourne Fire Deputy David Cody at the scene, several acres of land were consumed by the brush fire. Numerous apparatus responded to the scene including 5 brush breakers, 2 engine trucks and 1 tanker. There were no reported injuries. Traffic on Rt. 25 was not affected by the brush fire.

WEST YARMOUTH — Two women and one child were taken to Boston hospitals with serious injuries last night after their minivans crashed on Buck Island Road shortly before 6 pm, the police said. Both drivers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries then later taken to Boston hospitals, Yarmouth police Officer Michael Zontini said. A 5-year-old boy suffered a head injury in the crash and was also taken to the Hyannis hospital then transferred to Boston, according to Zontini. The police were investigating the cause of the head-on crash last night. One minivan swerved into the opposite lane and struck the other minivan, Zontini said. The police don't know what made one driver swerve into oncoming traffic, he said. The minivans looked almost identical, making it confusing for witnesses to describe what they saw, Zontini said. Barnstable County Sheriff Department van was rear-ended by a car this afternoon on Route 6 westbound less than one mile from the bridge, injuring 11 of 13 inmates who were passengers, according to police. One sheriff deputy also suffered minor injuries. The driver of the 24-passenger van, who was transporting the inmates from Orleans and Barnstable district courts, was not injured, said David Neal, a sheriff department spokesman. The accident occurred at about 3:50 pm The van was headed to the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne, he said. Six ambulances from Plymouth to West Barnstable were dispatched to the scene and the 12 injured people were taken to Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals, a state police trooper said at the scene. All of the injuries were minor, said Bourne Fire Department Deputy Chief Joseph Carrara. One of the passengers on the van refused treatment, he said. The van sustained no damage and the car had minor cosmetic damage, according to the state trooper. The accident scene was cleared by 4:55 pm At the time of the accident traffic was already backed up on the highway because construction work on the Sagamore Bridge is restricting traffic to one lane in each direction. BOURNE, MA- One person sustained serious but non life threatening injuries when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a backhoe during construction repairs on the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne, Massachusetts early Tuesday morning (09-15-09). The pickup truck sustained serious damage to the front-end and windshield. The driver was taken to Cape Cod Hospital. The operator of the backhoe was not injured. The accident happened around 3:00 AM. Bourne and State Police are investigating the accident. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction due to planned 24 hour construction repairs on the Sagamore Bridge.

WEST BARNSTABLE — A local teenager's dreams of football camp and art school ended yesterday in a Route 6 crash. Christopher Leonard, 17, of South Dennis was killed instantly when the Jeep Wrangler driven by his girlfriend, Savannah Szwarc, 19, of Sandwich, rolled over in the westbound lane between Exit 6 and Exit 5 at 12:13 pm, according to Leonard's family and the state police. The state police would not comment on the cause of the accident. But Leonard's stepmother said Szwarc had just pulled onto the highway, then had to swerve when cars ahead of her suddenly slowed down. She lost control and the vehicle flipped. Szwarc was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries, according to state police. "I know (Savannah) is devastated and that she blames herself," Debbie Shea, Leonard's stepmother, said in an emotional interview with the Times at the family's South Dennis home. "But it was an accident. It's not her fault." At least half of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School football team rushed to Cape Cod Hospital yesterday afternoon as word of the tragedy spread, Shea said. Leonard was passionate about football and his teammates. Besides football, he was on the high school baseball team and loved to snowboard, said his father, Jim Leonard. BREWSTER — A Harwich woman, 19, died yesterday in a collision on Route 6 that closed the state highway and created gridlock in Orleans and Brewster for hours. Angela Champ died when her 1996 Toyota Corolla crossed the center line and collided with a 2004 Chrysler minivan on the highway near the Orleans town line, according to state police. Although the crash was initially described as a head-on collision, the Toyota's passenger side was badly smashed. Rescuers extricated Warren Hayes, 79, of Harwich and his 67-year-old wife, Barbara, from the van, which had flipped on its side as a result of the impact. The pair were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life threatening, state police said. Rescue workers initially called for a helicopter to evacuate all three crash victims, but the flight was canceled after the Harwich 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the elderly couple's condition was found to be not as serious as initially thought. The crash stalled traffic on the two-lane stretch of Route 6, dubbed Suicide Alley for its high number of fatal head-on collisions before 1991. The installation of a central median bump and plastic stanchions to separate the two lanes that year has been credited with improving safety on the highway. BOURNE — .Four cars collided on the Sagamore Bridge shortly before 3 pm Friday, closing the bridge and producing a 16-mile backup on Route 3 to Cape Cod. The bridge, at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal, was closed for one hour and 10 minutes at the peak of holiday traffic to and from the Cape. It is one of only two bridges that span the canal. The crash in the Cape-bound lanes caused one car to roll over and land upside down, partially elevated off the pavement. One person was trapped inside when the vehicle came to rest against the bridges concrete side wall, said Bourne fire Lt. Martin Greene. Three people were taken to local hospitals James and Lily Ng of Brighton were taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable and Stephen Woodman of Brookline was taken to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Greene said, but they clearly needed to be seen for further medical evaluation. All were reported in stable condition Friday evening. All four traffic lanes on the bridge were closed after the crash. The four cars involved were each pointed in different directions when police and fire fighters arrived at the scene.
