A friend from high school suggested this song....didn't know the words so Googled them and gave it a shot. The song was written by Steve Goodman. Born on Chicago's North Side to a middle-class Jewish family, Goodman began writing and performing songs as a teenager, All this time, Goodman had been busy writing many of his most enduring songs, and this avid songwriting would lead to an important break for him. While performing at the Quiet Knight, a Chicago bar, Goodman saw Arlo Guthrie, and asked to be allowed to play a song for him. Guthrie grudgingly agreed, on the condition that Goodman buy him a beer first; Guthrie would listen to Goodman for as long as it took Guthrie to drink the beer. Goodman played "City of New Orleans", (original lyrics) which Guthrie liked enough that he asked to record it. Guthrie's version of the song became a Top 20 hit in 1972, and provided Goodman with enough financial and artistic success to make his music a full-time career. Goodman died of leukemia in 1984. n April 1988, some of Goodman's ashes were scattered at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs. He was survived by his wife and three daughters. Although Arlo Guthrie is associated with this song, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson and quite a few other artists recorded it. Arlo Davy Guthrie (born July 10, 1947) is an American folk singer. All of Pete Arnett's " children", except for Rick, were able to surprise him at "the Chop House" in Glen Allen, VA. Jean R Vizthum and Stephan Adrian Arnett helped organize this surprise party. Connie flew in from Germantown,Wisconsin. Jim and Cathy drove up from Baton Rouge, LA, and Steve drove in from Atlanta. Ginger and Cecil Goodman,good friends, also were there. Cecil also is taking pictures,and I am behind the camera. Jim, in light green shirt, laughs when Pete rounds the corner..and Pete was ambushed by his children...Happy birthday Pete..we all love you so much !!!! Peter Arnett is not the same Peter Arnett who is the journalist...this Peter Arnett was a businessman in the Richmond area for many years..and owned " National Electric Appliance Service" on Cary street. If it breaks, Pete can repair it..and if it can be fixed, he can fix it . Cathy is holding the camera....and Jean Vizthum is the co conspirator ! She stood out in the hot sun to make sure we could get the best seats in the restaurant..since they don't take reservations. We all were nervous wrecks by the time Pete arrived.
