(composite video) A leading economist has criticised the Gillard and Rudd governments for not consulting with economists on the mining super profits tax. Reserve Bank board member Professor Warwick McKibbin was responding to comments last week by Treasury Secretary Ken Henry who told economists to stop criticising the tax. Professor Warwick McKibbin told ABC1's Lateline Business that few of his colleagues were consulted on the issues. "I think the role of the bureaucracy is actually to critique and to be offering fair and fearless advice and I think there should be far greater engagement between the academic community and the policy community," Professor McKibbin said. "In a government that was just as frantic as the Rudd government, I just don't think anyone had time to consult people outside the small circle of people that were obviously driving policy." Professor McKibbin also called on both sides of politics to be consistent on climate change. He said a move towards a low carbon economy required investment by the private sector in renewable energies. But he said inconsistent climate policies made it hard for companies to make investment decisions..... www.abcscience.com.au The RBA doesn't get it - March 3rd, 2009; The decision of the RBA Board to leave the cash rate at 3.25% today confirmed that its members don't understand the economy. Operation Black on India TV News by Vivek Agrawal India lost Rs 12 Lakhs crores in income tax. This is because 11.4 crore "pieces of information" pertaining to unaccounted income collected by the Income Tax (IT) department's Central Information Branch (CIB) was not sent out to the field officials concerned for further action. The CIB gathers information from various sources, including municipal corporations, regional transport offices, banks, hotels, travel agents, airlines, mutual funds and Reserve Bank of India, about high spenders and investors and uploads the same on its computer network system. But the computer system has been non-functional in this regard since 2005. "It is true that for more than five years, the data of tax evasion material collected by the CIB wing was not allowed to be disseminated to the IT officers concerned," confirmed AC Tejpal, director of Income Tax (CIB), Mumbai. Shishir Jha, spokesperson for the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the apex body of the IT department, rubbished Tejpal's claim. "There is no such thing," Jha said.
