The Firemens Memorial (1913) in Riverside Park is one of the most impressive monuments in New York City. The monument was designed by H. Van Buren Magonigle (1867-1935), and its sculptures are attributed to Attilio Piccirilli (1866-1945). Riverside Drive stretches along Riverside Park and the Hudson River from West 72nd Street to Dyckman Street. When New York started expanding northward, the City acquired land, in 1866-67, for a park and scenic drive between the Hudson River Railroad and the rocky bluffs along the river. The original 1875 plan, by Frederick Law Olmsted, the co-designer of Central Park, called for a park with a picturesque drive winding along the natural contours of the land. Twenty-five years later, the result was an English-style rustic park and a formal tree-lined boulevard. A fashionable address at the turn of the 20th century, Riverside Drive attracted a collection of substantial neoclassical apartment houses and mansions along its eastern side. The Drives majestic elevation also made it an impressive location for colossal monuments and institutions, including Grants Tomb (1897) and Riverside Church (1930). The Firemens Memorial is one of more than a dozen monuments along Riverside Drive, including sculptures of Franz Sigel (1907), Joan of Arc (1915), Samuel Tilden (1926), Lajos Kossuth (1930), and Eleanor Roosevelt (1996). This monument is said to have had its origins in the remarks of the Right Reverend Henry C. Potter at the funeral of Deputy Fire ...

This Google Sketch-Up animation illustrates the proposed design now under construction at Market Square, an urban park in downtown Houston's historic district. The tour starts at the corner of Preston and Milam, proceeds down an allee of oaks to Travis, goes through Malou Flato's art benches to a tree-covered dining plaza with trellis and kiosk, through a memorial garden with fountain and sculpture commemorating Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas and all the victims of 9/11, along Congress and back up steps to an art walk along a crescent-shaped, terraced dog run to terminate in a play area overlooking a central lawn with a view of a James Surls sculpture. The park will include art by James Surls, Richard Turner and Douglas Hollis, Paul Hester, and Ketria Bastien Scott. Lauren Griffith Associates is the prime designer and landscape architect. Ray + Hollington are the architects. This is a project of the Houston Downtown Management District, funded by the Main Street/Market Square TIRZ. The park is owned by the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The video was well-received at a public meeting in 2009.

Does this bronze sculpture look familiar? Then maybe youve seen the life-sized version in Central Park. Its called The Indian Hunter by John Quincy Adams Ward. He made it in 1866 and it established his reputation as an artist. It was so popular that in 1869 he was commissioned to do a version for the Park. It was the first work by an American sculptor to be installed in Central Park. If you want to find it, its on a path between the Mall and the Sheep Meadow, at approximately 66th Street. Wards sculptures, like The Indian Hunter, were popular with the general public and respected by critics. Notice all the details, like the concerned look on the hunters face and the ribs showing through the dogs side. And see how the figures are in realistic poses, alert and ready to face whatever theyve just seen. The careful detail and the natural poses were unusual for nineteenth-century sculptures, which were mostly classical works like marble portrait busts and statues of famous men. Ward showed that you could combine classical composition with realistic details and natural subject matter. He chose an American theme, but he modeled the young Indians pose after the Borghese Warrior, an ancient Greek sculpture in the Louvre. He sold many small reproductions like this one. During his life he had it cast 4 times to meet the demand. By the way, you can see other important sculptures by John Quincy Adams Ward in New York City. He did the statue of George Washington that stands in front of ...
I came across a strange gold sculpture today just outside Central Park.
This sculpture, situated in the part of Central Park traditionally set aside for public concerts, depicts the famous German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (17701827) and was created by the German-American sculptor Henry Baerer (18371908). When landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted (18221903) and Calvert Vaux (18241895) designed Central Park in 1858, their Greensward Plan included a grand formal area that they called the Mall or the Promenade. Modeled on the formal allées of European parks like Versailles, it was designed to be the great walkway where the parade of parkgoers, dressed in their Sunday best, would come to see and be seen. Located at its south end are several sculptures of literary figures, as well as a statue of Christopher Columbus. Strains of music would lead visitors to the northern end of the Mall, where an elaborate cast-iron bandstand once stood on the present site of the bust of Beethoven. The concerts were a popular destination for park visitors, and thousands of people would attend these open-air performances. To prevent the landscape from being damaged during musical performances, fences that also provided seating for concertgoers were cleverly designed by Calvert Vaux. These benches have been re-created for visitors today. The concerts at the Victorian-era bandstand were especially popular with the large and growing German-American community who gathered at the Mall. In 1884, on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary, the Beethoven Mannerchoir ...
Sub translation also in english. (Un particolare ringraziamento per la preziosa collaborazione agli amici Dolores e Antonio) The Palace and the Real Park of Caserta were designed in the middle of the eighteenth century by architect Luigi Vanvitelli for will of Carlo III of Bourbon, child of Phillip V of Spain and Elizabeth Farnese. The Park with a size of 122 hectares shows itself as separated in two parts. The first one is made up by vast parterres, with a central avenue that leads to the fountain Margherita and to other paths flanked by Holm oak, Common lime and Hop hornbeam groves. After the fountain Margherita, begins the second part of the Park, which is accessed through two ramps that bring to the Ercoles bridge from which starts the great water road. It is a long run animated by games of waters in which basins alternate to tubs and fountains ornate by sculptural groups of mythological character. Close to the fountain of Diana and Atteone, at the end of the eighteenth century, the Garden English was born on a surface of around 23 hectares under the guide and the care of the English gardener John Andrew Graefer. The Queen of Naples Maria Carolina had wanted to conform herself to the fashion of the informal garden or landscape, a fashion that from England went spreading in Europe. (A particular thanks for the precious collaboration to the friends Dolores and Anthony)
