Channel 10 Melbourne's news coverage of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster which occured 28th January 1986 11:39 am EST. This January marks 25 years since the accident.
On January 28, 1986 despite the warnings of engineers not to launch in freezing temperatures, NASA management chose to launch Space Shuttle Challenger. The result was the loss of 7 astronauts in a horrific explosion 73 seconds later when flames from a solid rocket booster leak from a cracked o-ring and burned through the main fuel tank. The solid rocket boosters remained intact after the explosion and continued on out of control before mission control sent a self destruct signal to them so they could not cause destruction on the ground.

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of central Florida, United States, at 11:39 am EST (16:39 UTC). Disintegration of the entire vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The O-ring failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized hot gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces promptly broke up the orbiter. The crew compartment and many other vehicle fragments were eventually recovered from the ocean floor after a lengthy search and recovery operation. Although the exact timing of the death of the crew is unknown, several crew members are known to have survived the initial breakup of the spacecraft. However, the shuttle had no escape system and the astronauts did not survive the impact of the crew compartment with the ocean surface. The disaster resulted in a 32-month hiatus in the shuttle program and the formation of the Rogers Commission, a special commission appointed by United States President Ronald Reagan to investigate the accident. The Rogers ...

All Ufos Of Space Challenger Explosion
Horrible. The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of central Florida, United States, at 11.39 am EST (16.39 UTC). (wikipedia) This was one of the most horrible days in history.
A few years ago, we made a split screen video of the last Space Shuttle Challenger launch, which ended in disaster. On the left is a rocket-cam view of a contemporary launch. On the right is CNN footage taken from VHS master tapes I have of the disaster. This gives you the idea on how high they actually were when the Challenger blew up. This video was lost when YouTube deleted my channel for no good God damned reason. I recovered the video on a crashed hard drive, re-uploaded it, and here it is. There was a delay on the videos a bit when syncronizing them together.
Vdeo of the 1986 disaster was locked in Florida man's basement for almost 25 years Never-before-seen video of the Challenger space shuttle disaster has surfaced after almost a quarter-century locked away in a Florida basement. The chilling amateur footage was recorded by retired optometrist Jack Moss on his new home video camera on the morning of 28 January 1986. The four-minute film captures the moment the shuttle exploded, 73 seconds after launch from Florida's Kennedy Space Centre, killing all seven astronauts on board and setting Nasa's manned spaceflight programme back years. It is believed to be the only amateur film in existence of the world's worst space disaster, recorded in an era before mobile phone cameras, when even home camcorders were rare. "I don't think Mr Moss thought it was anything significant. He put it down in his basement with other tapes he had and just forgot about it," said Marc Wessels, executive director of the Space Exploration Archive, a Kentucky-based group that collects space memorabilia for educational purposes. "It's a unique vignette of a moment in history. We've seen the pictures from the ground at the point of explosion at Cape Canaveral, but never anything like this. It's remarkable raw footage." The tape surfaced after Moss told Wessels last year that he had watched the launch from the front yard of his house in Winter Haven, Florida, about 80 miles from Cape Canaveral. "I said we needed to talk about it and he just said casually ...
Twenty-four years after the Challenger disaster, new footage of the shuttle's catastrophic explosion has surfaced, depicting the space shuttle's disintegration over the Atlantic Ocean. On January 28th, 1986, Jack Moss recorded a video of the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger from the street of his neighborhood in Winter Gardens, Florida, just 80 miles from Cape Canaveral. The video shows Moss, his wife, and a neighbor awaiting the Challenger's blast off. Briefly after the video begins, the space shuttle is seen appearing over the top of the trees. Moss is heard stating, "That's brighter than usual." Not much further into the video, we see the vapor stream from the shuttle suddenly splits in two. Moss's video is thought to be the only amateur footage of the launch as video cameras were still rare. Shortly before he died this past December, Moss donated the footage to the Space Exploration Archive in Louisville, Kentucky. Marc Wessels, executive director of the archive had this to say, "It's just a totally different angle from the many videos and photos shot of the Challenger that day from beside the launch pad at Cape Canaveral. My idea is to get it out there in the public domain. Jack donated it so we could educate people about space." The Challenger space shuttle exploded 73 seconds after take off due to a failed O-ring seal on its right solid rocket booster. All seven crew members were killed and NASA's space fleet was grounded for two and a half years following ...
The space shuttle Challenger explosion, video never seen before until February 2010. This is the kind of video treasure that appears seemingly out of nowhere sometimes. This is a home video shot by Corydon, Kentucky optometrist Jack R. Moss at his winter home in Winter Haven, Florida on January 28, 1986. The occasion was the launch of spcae shuttle Challenger with Teacher-In-Space Christa McAuliffe. 73 seconds later, Challenger exploded, killing all seven astronauts onboard, including McAuliffe. Moss kept the video. Years later, he met Marc Wessels, executive director of the Space Exploration Archive, a non-profit, educational organization in Louisville. Moss passed away from cancer at the age of 88 last year. Wessels decided to release the video to the public domain on the anniversary of the tragedy this year. As told by the Louisville courier-Journal: On a chilly January morning 24 years ago, Corydon optometrist Jack Moss raised his new video camera to the sky over central Florida and captured one of the darkest moments in American space exploration the explosion of the shuttle Challenger. In the videotape, a stream of white smoke behind the climbing shuttle shoots into view but Moss, his wife and a neighbor noticed immediately that something was amiss when the channel separated into two streams. Thats trouble of some kind, Moss can be heard saying. That didnt look right. Moments later, someone is heard telling Moss that the Challenger had blown up. It exploded? Moss ...

The Space Exploration Archive has since published the video into the public domain in time for the 24th anniversary of the catastrophe. Despite being shot from about 70 miles from Cape Canaveral, the shuttle and the explosion can be seen quite clearly. It is unclear why he never shared the footage with NASA or the media. NASA officials say they were not aware of the video, but are interested in examining it now that it has been made available. "High Flight" Oh!
