Ovechkin wins 2009-10 Ted Lindsay Award The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) today announced Alexander Ovechkin as the inaugural recipient of the 2009-10 Ted Lindsay Award, presented annually to the "Most Outstanding Player" in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA. Ted Lindsay was on hand to present the players' award as part of the 2010 NHL Awards, held at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. Ted Lindsay Award finalists, Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks and Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, were also in attendance. "I'd like to congratulate Alex Ovechkin on receiving this award after another great year. Receiving this nod of respect from your peers carries a lot of meaning, and I know Alex will cherish this honour," said Lindsay, following the presentation of the first Ted Lindsay Award. Ovechkin, of Moscow, Russia, is now the three-time defending recipient of the NHLPA's "Most Outstanding Player" award, the first player since Wayne Gretzky to do so and also just the third player out of the award's 22 recipients to accomplish this feat (along with Guy Lafleur, 1975-76 -- 1977-78). He appeared in 72 games for the Washington Capitals in 2009-10, finishing amid the top-three players in the league in points (109) and goals (50), while leading the Capitals to their third-consecutive Southeast Division title in 2009-10, as well as to the first Presidents' Trophy in franchise history. This is the third straight season that Ovechkin reached ...
Red Wings' Datsyuk wins third Selke Trophy Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk has captured his third consecutive Frank Selke Trophy in recognition of "the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Datsyuk received 37 first-place votes and was named on 99 of 133 ballots for 688 points, edging Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler (36 first-place votes, 655 points) in the closest race of 2009-10 NHL Awards voting. A master at getting and keeping the puck, Datsyuk led the NHL in takeaways for the third time in the past four seasons with a career-high 132, nearly 60% more than second-place Kesler (83). Datsyuk ranked second on the Red Wings in plus-minus with a +17 rating and was the club's top face-off man, posting a 55% winning percentage (590 of 1070). Datsyuk is the first player to win the Selke Trophy for three consecutive seasons since Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens won it the first four seasons it was presented, from 1978 through 1981.

BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona is determined to shake off its Champions League exit and focus on winning the league trophy, the last piece of silverware available to the defending Spanish champion. Inter Milan denied Barcelona a chance to repeat as European champion by holding on for a 3-2 aggregate victory on Wednesday in the two-legged semifinal. Barcelona holds a one-point lead over Real Madrid in the league and can retain its title by winning its last four games. But it must start with a tricky match at surging Villarreal this weekend, while Madrid plays mid-table Osasuna. Barcelona labored to a 1-0 win over Inter on Wednesday but still exited because of a 3-1 defeat in Milan. Having focused on a comeback against the Italians for the last week, Barcelona must now turn its full attention to Villarreal, which has won five of six to give itself an outside chance of finishing in the top four to qualify for the Champions League. "You're left with feelings of rage and deception," forward Pedro Rodriguez said after the European exit. "But now we've got a difficult league game and we need to win each of the games we have left. We need to raise our heads and keep going because the league is still in play." A 20th league title is all Barcelona has left following a season when it won six trophies, including the Copa del Rey and Club World Cup. But, ultimately, another defensive-oriented team smothered the Catalans' up-tempo attacking game. "You can never be a victim of your own ...

Once again the Lakers made a couple of key offseason moves, letting go of Maurice Lucas, moving AC Green into the starting lineup, and picking up Mychal Thompson from San Antonio. Head Coach Pat Riley also made a tactical adjustment in 1986-87 by shifting the offensive focus from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Magic Johnson. The moves paid off. Johnson won his first career NBA Most Valuable Player Award while leading the Lakers to a 65-17 record, the second-best mark in franchise history. Abdul-Jabbar, now 39 years old, chipped in 17.5 points per game, and Michael Cooper was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year. The Lakers earned another matchup with the Celtics in the NBA Finals by sweeping Denver, losing just one game to Golden State, and then sweeping Seattle. Los Angeles routed Boston in the first two games of the Finals, and the teams then split the next four contests, giving the Lakers their second championship in three seasons. Johnson earned the NBA Finals MVP Award to go with his regular-season MVP trophy. At the Lakers' championship celebration in Los Angeles, Coach Riley brashly declared that the Lakers would repeat as NBA champions in 1987-88. It was a bold statement that served to motivate the team throughout the next season.

The first Clásico of the 2009-2010 season! Part 1/10 Six-goal Real Madrid hand Barcelona winter warning by Tim Hanlon Tim Hanlon Sat Dec 19, 9:25 pm ET MADRID (AFP) Real Madrid sent out a message of intent to all-conquering champions Barcelona with a 6-0 demolition of Real Zaragoza on Saturday. While Barcelona were away in Abu Dhabi winning the Club World Cup, their sixth trophy this year, Real closed the gap at the top of La Liga to just two points after tearing apart sorry Zaragoza. It was always going to be a tough challenge for Zaragoza's caretaker coach Jose Gay who took charge this week and it quickly turned into a nightmare with Gonzalo Higuain scoring after just three minutes. A double for Rafael Van der Vaart then followed and Higuain volleyed in a delightful shot still before half time. Cristiano Ronaldo, returning after a one-match ban, teased the Zaragoza defence before adding the fifth and substitute Karim Benzema wrapped up the scoring with 20 minutes to go against the side which has conceded most goals in the Spanish top flight. "The aim at the start was for the team to be solid in defence and then score as many goals as we could in attack and so we can be very happy at the way it has worked out," said the Real coach Manuel Pellegrini. "We can ask for more and for the team to be more consistent. Against Zaragoza we played an impressive 90 minutes and we need to be like that more often although in recent matches we have shown we are going in the right ...
Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2009 Ballon d'Or. The 22-year-old eclipsed runner-up and last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo by a record 240-point margin. Messi becomes the first Argentine to win the Ballon d'Or, although Argentine-born players Alfredo di Stefano and Omar Sivori, then regarded as Europeans, received the trophy when it was still called the European Footballer of the Year award. "It's a great honour for me to be voted (as winner of the) Ballon d'Or and to become the first Argentine in history to receive this award," Messi said. The win caps a brilliant year for the softly-spoken left-footed forward. He helped Barcelona to the Champions League title with nine goals - including one in the final against Manchester United - as well as bagging six in the Copa del Rey and 23 in La Liga. "I knew I was among the favourites, because Barca have had a prolific year and we won everything, but I didn't expect to win it by such an important margin," Messi added. The award's 96 jurors gave Messi 473 points out of a possible 480, a near unanimous verdict, organisers France Football said. Portugal's Ronaldo, whose Real Madrid side lost to Barcelona in the Clasico on Sunday evening, picked up 233 points in the vote by journalists from across the world, now open to players from all leagues and nationalities, with Spain's Xavi tallying 170 points. The jurors rewarded Barca's exciting brand of football with fourth and fifth place for Andres ...
here im showing you the highlights of every trophy barca has won during 2009 ( la liga, copa del ray, champions league, spanish supercup, uefa super cup) step 1: in the copa del ray final, barca practically came in warming up for the champions leage final, with a couple of changes, like jose pinto in net. barca were down 1-0 but came back to hammer bibao 1-4 as the final score, with messi, toure yaya, bojan and xavi putting goals on the board. step 2:LA liga, after a long and determining season, barca,s wonderful preformance, brought them huge victorys like 6-2 over madrid ,3-0 over sevilla 6-1 over athletico madrid, 6-0 vs malaga, finally after real madrid lost to villareal 3-2 that gave barca the title, atlthoug they were ten points ahead anyway at the end. step 3: a long cahmpions league campaighn paid off, after topping group stages, they topped lyon 5-3 on aggregate, and bayern munich was not able to stop barcelona after getting destroyed 4-0 and a 1-1 draw in the allianz arena gave them the go ahead, at chelsea barca looked to be done after essiens strike early on, but a 94th minute strike by andres iniesta gave them the victory applying the away goals rule, since it was 0-0 in the nou camp. After the saviour moment, manchester united prevailed over arsenal. many looked at united to be the stronger side looking into the final. in the final manchester united looked nothing like the way they played vs arsenal, united got close early on with a ronaldo freekick hitting ...
Losing a player like Younis Khan has made his many fans upset and young cricket fans are disappointed at the way Younis has been treated by the authorities. They want Younis back and the fact that he resigned without hesitation is being appreciated as a worthy decision, one that proves his innocence and reflects the antipathy of the concerned officials towards him. Pakistani cricket is already on a decline and losing good players like Younis Khan is another setback to the countrys most popular sport. At the same time, a point of concern is the attempt of political involvement to use cricket affairs for their ulterior aims. MQM leader Altaf Husasins statement that they will hold countrywide protests in case Younis Khans resignation is accepted is such an example. The countrys politicians need to stay out of sports since their involvement will further exacerbate the declining state of healthy sports in the country.
Kenya mst corrupt country in the African region Kenya has once again topped the list of the most corrupt countries in the region. Transparency international's bribery index says Kenya has the most incidents of corruption at 45 percent followed by Uganda and Tanzania. The Kenya police at 66.5 per cent is rated the most corrupt in East Africa. The force remain at the top for the eighth year running although Tanzania and Uganda police also rank high at 62.5 and 58.3 per cent. In Kenya, 51 percent of respondents reported paying bribes to get services while 68 percent Ugandans and 55 percent of Tanzanians paid bribes to get services. Corruption will continue eating us unless we took a step and stopped bribing, we might whine forever but the solution rests on us, if every Kenyan chose not to bribe for services and use the right channels, even poverty could decline given that corruption has contributed to the deepening poverty and the cost of doing business in East Africa. Game 5 - Lakers 99, Magic 86 With their 15th title within reach, the Lakers stumbled out of the gate, but recovered quickly and ended up winning going away. The Lakers won their first title since 2002, and clinched a championship in their 7th different city. Meanwhile, the Magic became just the ninth team to lose each of their first two appearances in the NBA Finals. The Magic made 7 of their first 10 shots to race out to a 15-6 lead, despite losing the opening tip for just the second time in the series. However, Orlando went cold, missing 10 of its final 15 shots to end the quarter, and going into the second quarter with just a two-point lead. The Magic extended their lead to four points with 7:12 left in the first half, but the Lakers went on a 16-0 run to take their first lead of the game, and stretch that lead to double digits. Los Angeles took a 10-point lead into halftime. The Lakers came out cold for the second half, making just one of their first five shots, allowing the Magic to cut the lead in half. However, Lamar Odom reponded with back-to-back three-pointers, stretching the lead back up to 11. Orlando went four minutes without a field goal, keeping the Lakers in front by double digits. The Magic ended up shooting just 5-of-19 in the third quarter, and the Lakers entered the fourth up by 15 points. During the fourth quarter, the Magic struggled to cut into the lead early. They managed to get within 11 points, but there were only two minutes left in the quarter ...
He arrived with the billing: the new Ronaldinho. But upon his arrival at Old Trafford from FC Porto in summer 2007 most Reds were left asking: Anderson who? After a wondrous debut season the Brazilian's talents are well known not just in Manchester, but around the world. The Ronaldinho comparisons are inevitable given both players began their careers at Brazilian side Gremio, who Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira (to give his full name) joined at the age of just five. But thats really where the similarities end. Where Ronaldinho is all flicks and flamboyance, Anderson (or Ando as he is known to his team-mates) is bustling with energy and possesses an eye for a defence-splitting pass. He has skill and technical ability in abundance, but his preference for midfield combat could bring you to question his Brazilian roots (more so if you spotted his dancing after lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy in May 2008!) At Gremio, Anderson made his first appearance aged just 16. He is most fondly remembered for a wonder goal against Nautico in November 2005, which earned a 1-0 win and promotion back to the top flight. He also earned a reputation internationally, shining shone with Brazil at the 2005 U17 World Cup, where he won the Adidas Golden Ball for most valuable player. Porto soon came knocking in January 2006, where he won the Portuguese Championship in 2005/06 and 2006/07, although his progress was hampered by a broken leg causing him to miss much of the latter campaign. The legend of Pep Guardiola at Barça is greater than ever after they have won their fifth title of 2009. At the same time, it brings back memories of 1951/52, when another wonderful FC Barcelona side brought home five trophies. If Kubala, Gonzalvo III, César, Martín or Segarra could have seen tonights game , they would have been proud of this Barça side. In the same way that Ramallets, Biosca and Basora have done in their later years. All of them were members of the great Barça of the Five Cups, which 57 years ago and managed by Fernando Daucik, won the League, the Cup, the Fairs Cup, the Copa Eva Duarte (equivalent to the modern day Spanish Super Cup) and the Martini&Rossi. That amazing generation of footballers, immortalised in a Joan Manel Serrat song that honoured the Barça magic, have now passed the baton on to Pep Guardiola and his side. 2009 simply has to be the best year in the clubs history. And only the 1951/52 campaign is in any way comparable. True, this modern incarnation of the Barça of the Five Cups achieved their aim in two different seasons (2008/09 and 2009/10), but nobody can argue that what Guardiola is doing now is a mere continuation of the good work he did last year. In fact, of the players on show at the Louis II tonight, only Ibrahimovic was not in the squad last season. From Valencia to Monaco After an unforgettable month of May, FC Barcelona have won a further two titles, with a playing style that the world can only marvel at. Since May 13, with ...
