Chandrayaan-1 (Sanskrit: चंद्रयान-१, lit: moon-traveller, or moon vehicle pronunciation (help·info)) was India's first unmanned lunar probe. It was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation in October 2008, and operated until August 2009. The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor. India launched the spacecraft by a modified version of the PSLV, PSLV C11 on 22 October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km north of Chennai, at 06:22 IST (00:52 UTC). The mission was a major boost to India's space program, as India researched and developed its own technology in order to explore the Moon. The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008. On 14 November 2008, the Moon Impact Probe separated from the Chandrayaan orbiter at 20:06 and struck the south pole in a controlled manner, making India the fourth country to place its flag on the Moon. The probe impacted near Shackleton Crater at 20:31 ejecting underground soil that could be analysed for the presence of lunar water ice. The estimated cost for the project was Rs. 386 crore (US$ 90 million). The remote sensing lunar satellite had a mass of 1380 kilograms (3042 lb) at launch and 675 kilograms (1488 lb) in lunar orbit. It carried high resolution remote sensing equipment for visible, near infrared, and soft and hard X-ray frequencies. Using data from a Nasa radar that flew aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists have detected ice deposits totalling at least an estimated 600 million metric tons near the moon's North Pole. Nasa's Mini-SAR instrument, a lightweight, synthetic aperture radar, found more than 40 small craters ranging in size from 2 to 15 km in diameter with water ice, the US space agency announced today. "The emerging picture from the multiple measurements and resulting data of the instruments on lunar missions indicates that water creation, migration, deposition and retention are occurring on the moon," said Mr Paul Spudis, principal investigator of the Mini-SAR experiment at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. The new discoveries show the moon is an even more interesting and attractive scientific, exploration and operational destination than people had previously thought. "After analysing the data, our science team determined a strong indication of water ice, a finding which will give future missions a new target to further explore and exploit," said Mr Jason Crusan, programme executive for the Mini-RF Programme for Nasa's Space Operations Mission Directorate in Washington.

This is actual, real live, footage of my great great grandfather, Thadius Henry Aurther Allen Coffin! I had this footage locked away in a really big safe that I have in our tiny apartment... but with all this press that the "recent" findings of water on the moon, I decided to show the world that the whole thing is a publicity stunt. Mankind, has "found" water on the moon so many times throughout history. When the ancient Greek's outerspace program was facing hard times... they "found" water on the moon. When Napolean promiced the French everything the world has and more... his "scientists" "found" water on the moon. And in my great great grandfather's time... well, somebody told him they had "found" water on the moon and it was safe/smart to move there. Thadius Coffin was so pleased to hear that he could move to the moon he brought together his band "The Rootin', Tootin', Old-time Rootbeer Jug Band... Band" for one last hootinany. Luckily, my great uncle, Clark B Coffin, had just purchased the families first HD Cam. It only shot in 720p 30fps... so we're going to have to deal with the quality of the film here in the future.
This Video shows the PSLV C11 launch in its full glory. At the end one can also see the first stage separation which eventually falls in the bay of bengal.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided to take two Indians to the moon onboard their next manned mission. The space agency, which first found traces of water on the earth's natural satellite through the first phase of its ambitious Chandrayaan-series mission, has thrown open its doors for applications from candidates willing to hitch a ride to the moon on board Chandrayaan-II.

Chandrayaan-1 has found proof of large amount of water on the surface of moon. Reports say that the data from the Chandrayaan-1 suggests water is still being formed on the moon. "It's very satisfying," the report quoted Mylswamy Annadurai, the mission's project director at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The US space agency NASA thanks the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the partnership after the India's maiden lunar mission Chandrayaan has successfully found traces of water on the lunar surface.
It could be one of the biggest finds in the history of space research - water on the moon. And proof of this may have come from India's own Chandrayaan satellite before it was aborted. The water found as a thin, invisible film.
