Changing Rights And Feedoms - Aboriginal People has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
There never was an indigenous people called Palestinians. Jews have lived there from time immemorial. When Westerners support the the so-called Palestinian people they are in fact supporting the PLO and Hamas, terrorist organisations. Israel is the only democratic nation in the Middle East, Arab citizens have far more rights and freedoms in Israel that in any other country in that part of the world.
Vincent Lingiari, AM (1908 21 January 1988), was an Aboriginal rights activist who was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the Aboriginal people. Lingiari was a member of the Gurindji people. In Vincent's earlier life he worked as a stockman at Wave Hill Cattle. He also played the didgeridoo. Vincent got elected and became the leader of the Gurundji communities in August 1966. Contents [hide] Main article: Gurindji strike Wave Hill Cattle Station is located approximately 600 km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. From the late nineteenth century it was run by the British pastoral company, Vesteys. Vesteys employed the local Indigenous people, the Gurindji, to work on Wave Hill. But working conditions were extremely poor and wages were very low when compared to those of non-Indigenous employees. In 1966, Lingiari, a member of the Gurindji who had worked at Wave Hill, and recently returned from a period of hospitalisation in Darwin, led a walk-off of indigenous employees of Wave Hill as a protest against the work and pay conditions. While there had been complaints from Indigenous employees about conditions on Wave Hill over many years, including an inquiry during the 1930s that was critical of Vestey's employment practices, the walk-off had a focus that was aimed at a wider target than Vestey's. Before 1968 it was illegal to pay an indigenous worker more than a specified amount in goods and money. In many cases, the government benefits ...
Some facts and my thoughts about the American Empire. The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the US, the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, DC, the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2) and with about 309 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and the third largest both by land area and population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The US economy is the largest national economy in the world, with an estimated 2008 gross domestic product (GDP) of US $14.4 trillion (a quarter of nominal global GDP and a fifth of global GDP at purchasing power parity). Indigenous peoples of Asian origin have inhabited what is now the mainland United States for many thousands of years. This Native American population was greatly reduced by ...

Annie Mae Pictou Aquash (Mi'kmaq) Naguset Eask - Sun Woman March 27, 1945 - December 12, 1975 Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia She was the true meaning of what a Native warrior stood for. She fought for all that she believed in women's rights, our children, our elders, our land, our freedom of religion, our treaty rights and so much more. She was found murdered in 1976 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and is a martyr of the Red power and indigenous peoples resistance movement. She was born in Indian Brook, Nova Scotia, Canada and was thirty years old at the time of her death. My father was from Nova Scotia and we have First Nations blood in our veins. It was a solemn and emotional time in our home that Spring of '76 hearing what they did to Anna Mae. The first time I heard this Elton John song, after Anna Mae's Murder, I thought of her and I think of it to this very day as "Annie's Song. I love her and feel honor bound to remember her so please no comments about Pine Ridge or her death. She is so much more than that. Lets just remember together for a moment this high flying bird. A Great Canadian. A great Woman. A great person. Rest in peace Sun Woman.
The situation in which Macedonia finds itself today can be traced back to the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. As a result of the Treaty of Bucharest, Macedonia was partitioned among Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria. These regions are known as the Republic of Macedonia (independent since 1991), Aegean Macedonia (presently within the borders of Greece), and Pirin Macedonia (within the borders of Bulgaria). A small part of Macedonia was given to Albania in 1919 (known as Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo). Upon annexation of Macedonia's territory, each country began terrorist campaigns aimed at expelling or forcibly assimilating the indigenous Macedonian population. Greece, in particular, began an intense campaign in order to eradicate the existence of Macedonia through a horrific policy of cultural genocide and ethnic cleansing. They outlawed the term Macedonia and proceeded to rename this region "Northern Greece". They changed the names of Macedonian people, villages, and landmarks from Macedonian to Greek. Bulgaria and Greece continue to deny the existence of their large Macedonian minorities to this day and refuse to grant them human rights. The human rights violations have been well-documented. Albania offers its Macedonian minority limited human rights but the situation does not compare to the human rights and freedoms enjoyed by the Albanian minority in the Republic of Macedonia. Before 1988, and the Republic of Macedonia's imminent independence in 1991, the official Greek policy was to ...

Irene Khan, secretary-general + head of Amnesty International, visits "Utopia", a remote indigenous community in the Northern Territory of AUSTRALIA (NE of Alice Springs)..... Her meeting with "Elsie" forms the basis of her speech on human rights issues in Australia + in the world today at the National Press Club address, 18th Nov. 2009, in Canberra..... In particular, Ms. Khan points to the ongoing racial discrimination, abuse + neglect suffered by black indigenous native Australian "First Nation" (aboriginal) people in one of the world's most wealthy countries (a G20 nation!). AMNESTY International's new campaign, "Demand Dignity", aims to hold national and international leaders accountable for the human rights violations that drive and deepen poverty. It will defend every persons right to live with dignity. The experience of people living in poverty is defined by a lack of income, but also, very importantly, by a combination of deprivation, insecurity, exclusion and powerlessness. These are in themselves abuses of human rights. Ms. Khan will address these issues in her talk. As well, she will link the larger campaign to the fact that, worldwide, Indigenous peoples are the most affected by extreme poverty and usually rank at the bottom of any social or economic indicator. In Australia, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are denied their rights to the highest attainable standard of health, adequate housing and freedom from discrimination. A major focus of ...
A Call to Action: Australian Indigenous Land Rights by Richard Downs, Ampilatwatja spokesperson - October 2009. "The Land Is Worth More Than The Money" Richard says: "On July 14 2009 we, Elders from the Ampilatwatja community, walked out of our houses and set up camp in the bush. We are fed up with the federal government's Northern Territory Intervention, controls and measures, visions and goals forced onto us from outside. We felt we were outcasts and isolated from all decision making - there has been no meaningful consultation... We therefore have no intention of going back there. We intend to stay here until our demands are met. I would like to send a personal invitation to all our brothers and sisters, who are leaders and workers in their Aboriginal organisations to come together as one people. I would like to share with you the visions of our leaders and Elders and the path we have chosen to honour the lines of our country, mother Earth, our dreaming and spirituality. Brothers and sisters, we are one and we are part of you. We are all connected through mother Earth. This is the true line we must follow to unite and to bring all our white brothers and sisters on this journey with us. We have many struggles and journeys ahead. The time is now. It is vital that we come together to listen to each other and share our thoughts and ideas on the way forward. What will be the future for our aboriginal people across this country? I look forward to meeting many of you on the ...
maximsnewsnetwork: 19 October 2009 - UNTV - United Nations: James Anaya, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedom of indigenous people says that the, "challenges are significant, there are problems that are systemic and patterns of violations for centuries and those patterns are hard to reverse." The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of indigenous peoples around the world, James Anaya today (19 October) briefed journalists at the United Nations. Commenting on the situation of indigenous peoples in Latin America, Anaya said that although all countries on the continent had recognized the rights of the indigenous peoples there was still an enormous gap between the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and the realization of those rights in the everyday lives of indigenous communities. He added that that gap needs to be narrowed. On the situation between the indigenous peoples and transnational companies, the Special Rapporteur said that all over the world there was a disconnect between parts of government that addressed indigenous peoples rights and the parts that promoted natural resource development. Anaya said that a lot had to do with coordinating those two policies on the part of governments. He stressed that the challenges were significant, because of problems that were systemic, patterns of violations that dated back centuries. Those patterns, he said, were hard to reverse, but Anaya added that little by ...
People have been misunderstood. They are local people defending their lands and their rights of freedom and liberty in their own indigenous land. This is not to say that extremism committed against fellow pachtouns is excusable, but know that there were a lot of criminal elements involved in some extreme acts that were committed against fellow pachtouns or to each other. Let the truth be heard and please do not give in to imperialism and political interests of others ... occupation is a crime, and bombing people of mudhouses is a war crime, and crime against humanity. Terrorist for one is a Freedom Fighter for another. As long as there is injustice, there will be "uprising" and terrible consequences. War is not a video game for those on receiving end. Airstrikes, drone attacks, ground assaults all are hurting innocent people. They have no court or judiciary, no govt., no one to listen to them. Therefore, they stand up to defend themselves and bring some justice. Remember, there was nothing wrong until imperialism made its meddling into the affairs of others and made the situation worse and worse and worse.................... Roots of these conflicts must be the focus. If only both sides are extremists. What came first, chicken or the egg is debatable forever. Pakistani Army has killed indigenous people and in return they received "counter defensive attacks". The Paki govt. master uses warfare as the way to wreak vengenace on those who do not agree with them. You be the ...

How dare he try to justify Apartheid a crime against humanity! Justification is one thing; providing information that may help to bring about insight, is something else. What could motivate a group of people to deny the majority of the people in the country democratic rights, and try to cling on to political power in the face of overwhelming opposition? This video examines some of the motivations behind the policy of Apartheid. The early years of Apartheid should be seen against a background of a First world zeitgeist (a remnant from the colonial age) of superiority over the indigenous peoples of the third world an idea that was losing favour rapidly in the western world throughout the 20th century, and also in SA by the 1970s. This was manifested in petty Apartheid, or early Apartheid up to the late 1970s when, along with changing times internationally, these petty apartheid discriminatory laws were being repealed one after the other. The second layer of background arises from a history of British repression, which only increased unity among Afrikaners, fuelling a determination to achieve freedom and independence. This contributed to their reluctance to part with these, once finally attained. Power sharing with the vastly superior numbers of black Africans in the same geographical area seemed to mean certain loss of their freedom. This gave rise to the homeland system and separate development. The rapid growth of the black population meant that separate development was ...
The "Letter of Allegation" is out there and published and now it is the Queen of Thailand's turn to respond. She either took the Akha land or didn't. The girls of the village have had to go to Bangkok, at least twenty boys of the village are now in prison, go to HELL QUEEEN of THAILAND. You stole the land, you ruin the families, Hell hath no fury like an Akha woman scorned, families shattered, children shipped overseas, finances ruined, health ruined. www.unhcr.org The highland minorities of Thailand live in the mountainous west and north. As many as 20 different 'hill tribes', totalling 1 million people according to some estimates, live in Thailand and include, among the more numerous, the Akha, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, H'mong and Mien. The government does not recognize the existence of indigenous peoples in Thailand. It maintains that they are migrants and thousands of them continue to be denied registration for an identification card. Non-citizen hill tribes are among the most vulnerable groups. Without proper political status, they face expulsion when their temporary stay expires. Without nationality and treated as second-class citizens, they suffer multiple discrimination, including lack of access to land and deprivation of basic human rights. In August 2008 the UN Special Rapporteur highlighted the case of the Akha indigenous people in Chiangrai province, whose land was allegedly seized in 2003 as a result of the Highland Development Station Project. The objective of the ...
Barbara Shaw, from Mt Nancy town camp near Alice Springs, talks in Melbourne on 27th August 2009 about the Northern territory Intervention, which began in 2007 under the Howard Government and is being extended under the Rudd Labour Government. Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin announced in July '09 that Town Camps in the NT would be paid $100m to sign 40 year leases making the residents tenants under the Territory Government. Should they refuse, Macklin threatened, the Government will compulsorily acquire the town camps under the special powers provided by the Emergency Response Legislation, which was pushed through Parliament in 2007. In response, Barbara Shaw has lodged two injuctions - or 'stays of execution' - against Macklin, stating that she did not inform the tenants that their right were going to be extinguished. The Federal Court will now proceed to a full hearing on Monday August 31st. More to come in the next few days... Fore more information, check out these articles: Crikey: 'Alice camps injunction is down to Macklin' www.crikey.com.au Crikey: 'Macklin botches Alice Springs town camp compulsory acquisition' www.crikey.com.au Also, very importantly, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples, Prof James Anaya, has recently visited the Northern Territory on a 11 day trip (17-28 August 2009). He also met with Barbara Shaw, who introduced him to one of the town camps near Alice. His report has ...
A United Nations Raporteur has found the Northern Territory Intervention (a kind of mini martial law) breaches Australia's international obligations..... THE United Nations special rapporteur on indigenous rights says the intervention into remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory is clearly discriminatory, and that there is "entrenched" racism in Australia. James Anaya didn't pull any punches after his two-week visit of the country. He says the Rudd Government should reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act in the NT "right away" because the intervention is discriminatory. "It undermines the right of indigenous peoples to control their own destinies, their right to self-determination," he said. He also slammed Labor's policy of demanding 40-year leases over indigenous land before building new houses and said the stolen generations should be paid compensation. The Racial Discrimination Act was suspended in the NT by the former Howard government so the intervention's more extreme measures, such as quarantining welfare payments, could be rolled out. The Rudd government has promised to introduce legislation to reinstate the act in the Spring session of parliament, but wants to continue many of the compulsory measures. Prof Anaya says while there's no doubt special efforts are required to combat indigenous disadvantage and abuse of women and children, the intervention's "broad sweep" goes too far and is incompatible with various international conventions ...

Neville Williams ('Uncle Chappie') speaks from the site of the Aboriginal Embassy on Invasion Day 2009 (January 26th aka 'Australia day'). [from Wiki:] "The Tent Embassy promotes Australian Aboriginal Sovereignty. Their demands included land rights and mineral rights to Aboriginal lands, legal and political control of certain sacred sites, and compensation for land that they claim was stolen. Their demands have been consistently rebuffed by past and current governments. It has also been used as a site for protesting against other issues, such as against uranium mining at Jabiluka in the Northern Territory during the 90s. Currently Elders such as Uncle Neville Williams, from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy are working to protect traditional Wiradjuri land in Western NSW at Lake Cowal which is in the process of being mined for gold. On Australia Day 1972, the Tent Embassy was established in response to the mcmahon Coalition Government's refusal to recognise Aboriginal land rights and saw a new general purpose lease for Aborigines which would be conditional upon their intention and ability to make reasonable economic and social use of land and it would exclude all rights they had to mineral and forest rights. The embassy has existed intermittently since then, and continuously since 1992. Some of the people involved in its establishment include Gary Foley, Chicka Dixon, Pearl Gibbs and Paul Coe."

Greg Platt spoke as the co-ordinator of the Indigenous Solidarity Campaign of Australia Asia Worker Links (AAWL) at the 2009 commemoration for indigenous freedom fighters Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner. 60 people attended the commemoration on the anniversary of their execution on January 20, 1842. They were the first judicial executions in Victoria, which were public and attended by 5000 people, a quarter of the population of Melbourne at the time. Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner were part of a group of five Tasmanian aborigines brought to the mainland by Chief Protector George Robinson to 'civilise' the mainland indigenous people. After a brief time, they were left to fend for themselves. And so the five launched a guerilla style campaign of harassing settlers around Western Port and South Gippsland to leave their stations. Their capture took a number of months and three military expeditions. Upon capture, they were brought back to Melbourne where the two men were put on trial for murder and sentenced to be executed. They were not allowed to present statements or evidence in court on their own behalf as they were seen as heathens and prohibited from giving evidence in their own defence. Photos by Aly Ostrowski Music is Don't Panic by Coldplay The flight from Fort Chipewyan to Fort mcmurray highlighted the contrast between the beauty of the not quite unspoiled Athabasca Delta and the devastation of the Alberta tar sands extraction operations. We need to slow down the irresponsible expansion of development which threatens the water supply, poisons the people who live and work in the watershed, destroys habitat, and damages the sovereignty of Canada and its First Nations. The Sierra Youth Coalition asks that: 1. we legislate that no new approvals be given to tar sands development until regional plans are democratically created by the communities involved in order them to have a say in the nature of their economic growth and how the ecological and socio-economic impacts will be dealt with. 2. Aboriginal communities be respected and their treaty rights be honoured and upheld. 3. Canada reassess its national energy policy, calling into questions its energy-exporting obligations under the North-American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). 4. environmental justice, the right to a healthy and productive environment, be enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Even though YT has again shredded my video into blurriness, these old photos deserved to be seen outside the Library of Congress,I feel. This month I saw a YT partner perpetuating stereotypes of North American Indigenous Peoples.I hope this can help at least one person shed a wrong notion. The language spoken in the video is Lushootseed, provided as an example so that people can understand how the White settlers got Chief Si?al/Seattle's name, and many other Native words wrong. Another audio example can be found at: Vi Hilbert interview www.historylink.org Lushootseed is the Native American Language indigenous to the Seattle area. It belongs to the Salishan language family, whose domain extends from the Pacific coast eastward to western Montana and from British Columbia southward to Oregon. nuuchahnulth.org (quicktime player needed) On 13 September 2007, the UN passed its Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP: INDIA - THE DALIT STORY The caste system of India has produced a classless people, literally outcasts, called the Dalits, or untouchables. They number about 300000000, representing close to one-third of India's total population. If the Dalits were a nation, it would be larger than the United States of America and the fifth largest in the world. An incredible movement is taking place in which many Dalits are rejecting Hinduism, which is believed to be the cause of their condition, and in large numbers are embracing other religions, including Christianity. Although some churches are found among the Dalits, mostly this movement is in its infancy. Other videos in this series, Sounds of Global Worship, feature examples of the varied worship expressions found among these people. It is the desire of Heart Sounds International to help this emerging church develop its own indigenous worship forms. Of interest is the fact that many of India's artists and creative people come from among the Dalits, and we believe that in time these new Christian believers will compose many new songs of worship to the Lord. This video is an excerpt from a documentary that Heart Sounds completed by invitation of a ministry within India. It reveals the plight of the Dalits as they struggle to find freedom in the midst of a very difficult situation. Many are finding this freedom through the good news of Jesus Christ Whom the Dalits also recognize as a Dalit, or outcast ...

What's Real about The Real News? The Real News will investigate, report and debate stories that help us understand the critical issues of our time. We won't blindly follow wire services or official press releases that attempt to set the news agenda. We will cover the big stories of the day, but we will broaden the definition of what's important. The movements for the rights of working people, women, children, immigrants, indigenous peoples, for freedom of religion and conscience, for moral and spiritual values and for peace and against racism are news. The health of our planet will be a story, day after day. The Real News will give important stories the attention and sense of urgency they deserve. Who's a Newsmaker? We will cover people in high office, but we won't limit our news to official positions or the partisan horse race for power. We think that people who fight for human rights and work for solutions are newsmakers. Targeting a Mass Audience We will make stories that matter dramatic and engaging. We will combine sizzle with substance, understanding that craft and entertainment values are critical to winning a large audience. Daring Debate Many sides of an issue will be explored, taking debate beyond narrow partisanship. Guests will have deep knowledge and investigated opinions. Debate will be lively and witty and will resist personal attacks, talking points and empty rhetoric. www.therealnews.com
