"It all began in 2002 with a little club night in Bar Rhumba, London, UK. Mr. Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova were hosting the night and, towards the end of the night, they dropped "Just A Lil Lovin'", which a friend in Berlin had given them on CD-R. Lengthy, theatrical trailer for "The Million Dollar Serial," RIDERS OF DEATH VALLEY, starring Dick Foran, Leo Carillo, Buck Jones and Charles Bickford. Originally conceived as a standard western serial to fill out Universal's commitment of four cliffhangers for the 1941-42 season, RIDERS OF DEATH VALLEY benefitted from Universal's abundant roster of contract players. Producer Henry McRae assembled a once-in-a-lifetime cast -- Foran, Carillo, Bickford (perhaps the only serial player to receive three Oscar nominations) plus Noah beery Jr., Lon Chaney Jr. and "Big Boy" Williams -- that was well beyond the serial's routine screenplay. McRae also signed western favorite Buck Jones, who had anot appeared before the cameras in nearly a year and was then without a starring series. Though loaded with ample quantirties of Saturday serial staples as gunfights, chases and fisticuffs, the joy of RIDERS OF DEATH VALLEY comes from watching the principals and the obvious joy they are having. The repartee between Jones, Foran, Williams and Carillo is spontaneous with large portions of ad-libbing substituted for scripted dialogue.
