MSNBC, October 20 Tamron Hall: Here's what we're watching right now, dozens of newly minted Republican voters in California say they were duped into joining the GOP. Reportedly, the California Republican Party hired a firm to register new voters but some voters actually thought they were signing petitions for tougher penalties against child molesters. They did not know, they say, that they actually were becoming Republicans. Joining us is former prosecutor and NBC legal analyst, Susan Filan. So Susan, this firm, Mark Jacoby, this guy was arrested and released on bail. This is a lot about bait and switch. Susan Filan: Yeah, it's a real problem, Tamron, because your Constitutional right to vote in this country is one of your most sacred and fundamental rights. Were a democracy, that means the people who govern, who lead us, are elected by us. If our ability to vote and to choose is interfered with, our democracy is at stake. And what's happened here in this California charge is this person supposedly, allegedly -- because he's innocent until proven guilty -- told people they were signing a petition but that they had become a Republican to do it and switch their parties in some cases. In other cases he didn't even tell them that he was in fact switching their party. They thought they were signing a petition and their party got switched. What's going to happen on voting day when they go to register as their Democratic vote that they thought they were registering, they're not going to be at the right poll, theyre not going to get to vote. Tamron Hall: What kind of time is this guy facing if he's convicted and found guilty? Susan Filan: Well, these are felony charges. Its not likely that hes going to get incarcerated the first time around. But the fact that he got prosecuted I think is right, because even though people say its politically motivated its not, it's a dereliction of duty of the public officials if they didn't charge him. Tamron Hall: Alright, Susan, good to talk to you.

ACORN, which stands for: Association of Community Organizations, has been accused of voter registration fraud all across this country. This group can be said to be engaged in corrupt shake-downs. However they get a pass on this from the news media and the government. Had an Italian engaged in these same practices, they would be charged under the RICO Act, (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act), and called the Mafia or Cosa Nostra. Where this organization has engaged in voter registrations same people registered multiple times. The line up of the Texas football team, the Dallas Cowboys were registered to vote in Las Vegas, Nevada. One town had more people registered to vote than had voting age people in the population. It has been reported that Senator Barack Obama while a community organizer worked for this organization. Basically if Senator Obama wins this election by a razor thin majority it could be said the election was won by Democratic Party voter fraud perpetrated by ACORN on their behalf. The only way to have a clean election to erase any appearance of voter fraud, the next president needs to win by a large majority.

The group, Muslim Americans for Obama [MAFO], insists that all of its voter registration activity is non-partisan, despite the fact that its mission statement says it was launched in August 2008 "to provide a vehicle for Muslim-American supporters of Barack Obama to organize and mobilize our fellow citizens to get out the vote to elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States." Continuing, the group's website states: "Although there is only a short period of time until the election..., there is much work to be done for supporters of Barack Obama's candidacy. [MAFO] was formed to offer a vehicle for Muslim-Americans to mobilize quickly and effectively so that our community turns out in great numbers for Barack Obama on Election Day." The "get out the vote" events are scheduled at mosques in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio. Robert Spencer is director of Jihad Watch, a project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center. He argues MAFO may be skirting the law. "When they are running these voter registration drives at mosques, really it's essentially illegal because they are clearly trying to get people to vote for Obama -- and that's in violation of their tax-exempt status," Spencer charges. "So this is a group that is crossing the line and ought to be disciplined as such." The Jihad Watch leader, however, figures that is not likely to happen. "...I kind of doubt that they will be [disciplined], given the politically correct atmosphere nowadays," he says. "I wouldn't be the least surprised if no action is taken against them." Spencer contends that if a group called "Christians for John McCain" claimed to be non-partisan and ran a registration drive in churches, it would be all over the media and create a huge scandal and embarrassment for the McCain campaign.

From the Cafferty File: There may be hope for the survival of our country. The rise in the number of independent voters in several states has been so sharp that they now virtually constitute a third party. That's not good news for the Democrats and Republicans, and it's really not good news for the Republicans. The New York Times reports that for more than 3 years now, there has been a decline in the number of voters registering as Republicans and an increase in the number registering as Democrats. These shifts could affect local, state and national politics for several election cycles to come. Already, Republicans have lost control in many state houses and governors' mansions, and they took a beating in the midterm elections of 2006. It's important to note that swings in party registration aren't uncommon from year to year, and party registration often has no impact on how people end up voting. But experts say what is remarkable is that this shift away from the Republican Party is now in its 4th year. One analyst says it suggests a "fundamental change going on in the electorate." Former House Majority Leader Republican Dick Armey says these are "not good numbers" for the GOP, but cautions they don't give a clear indication about what will happen in the presidential race. Armey suggests the key is who all these new independent voters will support. Democrats point to President Bush as the main reason for the shift, but they're also benefiting from demographic changes -- things like the rise in the number of younger voters and the urbanization of the suburbs. Here's my question to you: Republican voter registrations have been declining since 2005. Why?
