Two great Russian writers, face to face. A few hours ago, I read for the first time Gorky's beautifully written impressions of his friend Anton Chekhov, who is my favorite male writer. Though the ending is a bit ambiguous, Maxim Gorky's description of the doctor and writer Chekhov always shows this man in a pure light of intelligence and compassion, and as an exquisite observer of humanity. As with John Lennon, Jesus of Nazareth or Rosalía de Castro, one gets the urgent wish to have met Anton Chekhov, even if only for some minutes, To any fan of Chekhov, I must recommend Gorky's book very strongly. He or she will read with emotion, getting a few more clues about the Chekhov mystery. * Congratulations to the USA for the new health bill that cares for the people. Anton Chekhov would have admired this humane development. * If you are a teacher like me, you will love what Chekhov has to say about our profession, as Gorky records faithfully on this emotional text. Just an opinion. Chekhov is my favorite male writer, and these are the stories by him that I like best (so far!): - About Love (1898) - The Night Before Easter - At Home - On The Way - The Head Gardener's Tale - In The Ravine - Agatha - The Lady With The Dog (1899) - Late Flowers (1882) - Ward No. 6 - A Small Matter - Anna On My Neck (1895) - Ionich - The Packaged Man - The Trousseau - Aniuta - A Room With A Garret - The Hunter (1885) - Enemies - My Life (1896) * On the photo with the long coat, Chekhov reminds me of Hugh Laurie as House, so here the actress from the same TV series Olivia Wilde symbolizes Olga Knipper and all the females in the Russian writer's life. * I wish someone found the 10000 photographs of patients that Anton took in Sakhalin. * Cover paintings: detail from "Monk By The Sea" by Caspar David Friedrich, (the presumably Spanish author of the Cherry Orchard Lady is not specified), detail from "In The Monastery Guesthouse" by Alexis Korzoochin, and "He Wasn't Expected" by Ilja (or Ilya) Repin. * I'm sorry that this video can't be seen in Germany. A warm greeting to Russia, a country that I love mostly because of Chekhov, Turgenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. * Music: MÁIRE BRENNAN - "The Days Of The Dancing" (I love this beautifully uplifting song.)

School project. Group interpretation and shortened version of the monologue "On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco" by Anton Chekhov 1886. It's about a guy lecturing about what his wife tells him to: tobacco. But, instead he ends up ranting about how miserable his life is, and her abusive control over him.
Just for the record, I actually love some of the gaping flaws in this game. Others, however, I hate with the fire of a thousand suns. I can guarantee several failure montages in the future. There are some issues with the sound synch - Audacity seems to record in a different part of space and time to everything else on the planet so the video blinks where I've tried to synch it back up again. EDIT It's pretty quiet, I might try to fix that at some point.
