After the death of a close friend of president Chen Shui-bian and former first lady Wu Shu-jen went to visit with her husband and mourn the loss. Chens office also issued a statement expressing regret at its earlier decision to bring a lawsuit against the United States government. In other Chen news, the former president has expressed regret at his decision to sign a letter of authorization permitting Roger Lin of the Formosa Nation Legal Strategy Association to file a lawsuit on behalf of him in his capacity as former leader of the Republic of China government in exile against the United States government. The controversial lawsuit was to request that the United States fulfill its duties as an occupying power of Taiwan and open a military tribunal to try Chen. Now Chen says that he was used.
Protesters gathered outside the Taiwan high court on Thursday the 24th, as the court announced its decision to continue Chen Shui-bians detention. Chen received a life sentence for graft-related charges. A representative from Democratic Progressive party voiced his support for Chen. [Huang Ching-lin, DPP Representative]: "Standing here, we wish President Chen to be strong. He must be strong. His strength will turn into everyone's strength, and then we can defend ourselves against a government from China that will oppress the Taiwanese people. Chen has been in jail for almost nine months now. He was convicted on six charges related to corruption and bribery. He was also fined six million US dollars. [Wen Yao-yuan, High Court Spokesman]: Defendant Mr. Chen Shui-bian is highly suspected in this case. The court considers the previous verdict of a life sentence, and must ensure the future execution of justice. Plus there are still questions about money in foreign accounts to be clarified." Chen has appealed the guilty verdict and life sentence, denying wrongdoing, calling the charges a political plot. He also petitioned the US government for legal help. Chen's wife was convicted on seven counts of graft and also sentenced to life in jail. She was fined nine million US dollars. Chen's son and daughter-in-law were handed lesser sentences for related crimes.
An aide to former President Chen Shui-bian said Friday that former first lady Wu Shu-jen is unhappy with the reasons given for the continuation of Chens detention by the High Court on Thursday. In response to the judges reason that Chen has failed to have NT$570 million returned to Taiwan, Wu said that the funds have been frozen by the bank in which they are held and cannot be remitted back to Taiwan until the bank receives a final verdict from Chen's trial on corruption and money-laundering charges. The High Courts decision to detain former President Chen for another three months angered Chen and caused his wife Wu Shu-jen to bemoan the perceived injustice.

Ex-president Chen Shui-bian and his wife Wu Shu-jen were both given life sentences and fined NT$200 million and NT$300 million respectively after being found guilty by the Taipei District Court Friday on corruption, forgery and money-laundering charges. The court's press release that accompanied the announcement did not mince words, saying that Chen committed the crimes despite having a good understanding of the law and that others had followed his bad example. The Taipei District Court announced its verdict in the trial of former President Chen Shui-bian and his family on charges of money-laundering, corruption, forgery in connection with the misuse of the president's state affairs fund and accepting bribes.

ZHANG: Taiwans former first lady, Wu Shu-jen, pleaded guilty today in connection with a massive graft case embroiling her family. This is the first time she had showed up in court after missing 17 other court days over the past two years. STORY: Wu, who beamed and waved as she entered the Taipei District Court in a wheelchair, is charged with embezzlement and receipt forgery involving public funds. Prosecutors added a money laundering charge in December. She pleaded guilty to forgery and of accepting $2.2 million related to a suspected shady land use deal, but denied other graft charges. The case involving Wu, her husband former president Chen Shui-bian, their family and his aides has hurt the image of the Democratic Progressive Party. Former president Chen Shui-bian is in jail awaiting trial. His charges include embezzling T$104 million from a special fund, taking bribes of about $9 million related to a land procurement deal and accepting millions in kickbacks to help a contractor. Wu's lawyers would not comment on Tuesday's court appearance, which was a preliminary hearing ahead of an expected full trial.
Former Taiwan leader's daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陈幸妤) yesterday threw a fit on the streets of Manhattan, screaming at a group of Taiwanese reporters dogging her every move in New York. Chen, a dentist, left for New York on Saturday night to take a US dental aptitude test. As soon as her plane touched down at Newark Airport in New Jersey, she was met by a throng of Taiwanese reporters who continued to follow her around the city. Screaming at the reporters for some 15 minutes and attracting the attention of many passersby, Chen slammed them for following her everywhere like flies hovering over my head. "Why do you keep following me? I am not a wanted fugitive but you have been hounding me for six months in Taiwan and in the US," Chen said in news clips aired by several cable news channels in Taiwan yesterday. "Do you want me to die? What exactly do you want? All you want is to disturb my life," Chen said. Chen Hsing-yu is the only member of former leader Chen Shui-bian's (陈水扁) family who has not been implicated in charges of money-laundering. Chen Shui-bian is in detention, while his wheelchair-bound wife and son have been indicted and restricted from travel. Many pan-blue talking heads speculate that the dental aptitude test was just a convenient guise for her to be in the States to take care of business relating to Chen Shui-bian's alleged money-laundering, including meeting with the Chen family's former doctor, Huang Fang-yen (黄芳彦). Some pan-blue pundits alleged ...

Former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian returned to jail on Wednesday after almost three days of hospital care following a hunger strike. Supporters are preparing to protest his arrest, which they call a political plot. A probe into the ex-president's suspected role in several money-related crimes will be finished by the end of the year, possibly leading to an indictment. Many still believe he is innocent. Experts say Chen's fate will affect public opinion of Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which backed Chen in office. They face tough local elections next year. The 57-year-old Chen is known as an anti-China firebrand who upset Beijing while in office from 2000 to 2008. He was arrested on November 12 on suspicion of graft, forgery, money laundering and other crimes. He was sent to a suburban Taipei jail cell until late Sunday, when he was hospitalized after not eating for 108 hours. A doctor on Wednesday determined that Chen was fit enough to return to jail. The ex-president has denied wrongdoing and called the probe against him and other senior opposition leaders a political plot to discredit motions toward Taiwanese independence.

The former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian, has been formally arrested in connection with a money-laundering case. The former president has been a strong advocate of independence from Beijing. After eleven hours of hearings overnight, the court formally arrested Chen this morning. [Huang Chun-ming, Taipei District Court Spokesman]: "The prosecutor believes the defendant has infringed corruption laws by illegally taking possession of state assets, making use of his position to illegally take possession of state assets, and money laundering. The lightest sentence for each charge is 5 years. There are also concerns of manipulating evidence and conspiring with others on the special fee case. Therefore the court orders an arrest." Chen, a 58-year-old career lawyer and president from 2000 to 2008, was detained yesterday after being questioned for most of the day. He left a special Supreme Court prosecutor's office in handcuffs but was not charged with a crime. Chen has called the prosecution a political plot.
