Airline pilots do not live in a vacuum, and we understand fully and are sympathetic to the fact that many Americans have recently experienced economic difficulties. But airline employees have been hit by an economic tsunami ... I attempt to speak accurately and plainly, so please do not think I exaggerate when I say that I do not know a single professional airline pilot who wants his or her children to follow in their footsteps." Today, the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation held a hearing to receive testimony on the US Airways Flight 1549 Accident. On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River at approximately 3:30 pm following a double-engine failure while in route to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. There were 150 passengers onboard and five flight crew. All 155 people onboard survived.
CNN- Minutes after he reported hitting birds and losing power in both engines, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 calmly told an air traffic controller the plane would ditch into the Hudson River. "We can't do it," pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger said at 3:29 pm on January 15, in response to efforts to land the plane at New Jersey's Teterboro airport, according to a recording released Thursday by the Federal Aviation Administration. "We're gonna be in the Hudson," Sullenberger said, about three and a half minutes after the Airbus A320 took off from New York's laguardia Airport. "I'm sorry, say again," said the controller, from New York Tracon, a radar facility on Long Island that handles flights after they depart from laguardia or Teterboro airports.. Listen to pilot talk to controllers There is no response.

Incredibly, every single passenger and crew member was rescued from the frigid waters thanks to an absolutely extraordinary and perfectly executed emergency landing procedure by the pilots. "We've had a miracle on 34th Street, now we've had a miracle on the Hudson," said Gov. David Paterson. Officials tell CBS 2 the airplane is Flight 1549, an Airbus 320 that took off from La Guardia Aiport and was headed to Charlotte, NC There are reports that there were 155 passengers on board, with two pilots and three flight attendants. It went down around 3:27 pm Fire officials reported at least 78 injuries in the crash. Survivors recalled the terrifying flight that lasted just a few minutes. "About three or four minutes into the flight -- I was sitting in 22A -- the left engine just blew, fire and flames came out of it, I was looking right at it because I was sitting right there, and it just started smelling a lot like gasoline. A couple minutes after that the pilots said we had to brace for a hard impact, and that's when everyone started saying prayers," a passenger on the flight told CBS 2. Officials believe a "double-bird strike" caused the plane to go down, meaning two birds entered the engine, completely incapacitating them. In this case, it's believed ...

"Prepare for impact!" was all the pilot of the US Airways airplane told the passengers before making an emergency landing in the Hudson River Thursday afternoon. The flight crew opened the exits of the Airbus A320 as the passengers steeled themselves for the icy waters and tried to remain calm in the cabin. "The left engine just blew. Fire, flames were coming out of it and I was looking at it because I was sitting right there. And it just started smelling like gasoline," a passenger told WNBC. "...Everyone started, to be honest, to say prayers." "Gotta give it to the pilot man," the shaken passenger added. "He did a helluva job." All of the passengers survived, according to initial reports thanks to the expertise, bravery and cool of the pilot, Chesley B. My thoughts on Chesley B. 'Sully' Sullenberger iii's heroics as US Airways Airbus A320 Flight 1549 lands on the Hudson River, by Manhatten.
A pilot saved the lives of 155 people on board a plane which crash-landed in the Hudson River, New York. Chesley B Sully Sullenberger III, of California is a former fighter pilot. Mr Sullenberger has been hailed as "The hero of the Hudson" for landing the Airbus A320 into the river shortly after taking off from La Guardia airport in New York. Officials said both of the plane's engines were damaged after it hit a flock of geese. It had been heading for North Carolina. "It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river, and then making sure that everybody got out," said New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg . "I had a long conversation with the pilot. He walked the plane twice after everybody else was off. And tried to verify that there was nobody else onboard. And assures us there were not." Of the 150 passengers and five crew on board Flight 1549, one person suffered two broken legs, but there were no other reports of serious injuries. However, many were panicked and frightened as they were pulled from the wrecked plane, said local ferry crews and police divers who were first on the scene. Some passengers huddled on the wings of the plane in freezing cold air, while others in the water went limp from the cold. Rescuers said they would not have survived more than a few minutes if they had not been saved.
Let's thank not only the Captian, but the rest of the flight crew and cabin staff. This was a collective effort by all. A cool-headed pilot maneuvered his crippled jetliner over New York City and ditched it in the frigid Hudson River on Thursday, and all 155 on board were pulled to safety as the plane slowly sank. It was, the governor said, "a miracle on the Hudson." One victim suffered two broken legs, a paramedic said, but there were no other reports of serious injuries. US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 bound for Charlotte, NC, struck a flock of birds just after takeoff minutes earlier at laguardia Airport, apparently disabling the engines. The pilot, identified as Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III of Danville, Calif., "was phenomenal," passenger Joe Hart said. "He landed it — I tell you what, the impact wasn't a whole lot more than a rear-end (collision). It threw you into the seat ahead of you. "Both engines cut out and he actually floated it into the river," he said. In a city still wounded from the aerial attack on the World Trade Center, authorities were quick to assure the public that terrorism wasn't involved. The plane was submerged up to its windows in the river by the time rescuers arrived, including Coast Guard vessels and commuter ferries that happened to be nearby. Some passengers waded in water up to their knees, standing on the wing of the plane and waiting for help. Helen Rodriguez, a paramedic who was among the first to arrive at the scene, said ...
