At 515 Fairoaks we find this unique house that Frank Loyd Wright did in 1897 at the start of his period of experimentation that led to his modern style a stunning example of which is the other home in this clip. It is one of two Oak park homes Wright desinged for wealthy stockbroker Warren F. Furbeck . Which he in turn gave away as wedding presents to two of his sons. On the other side of the street and down the block Wright built the William G. Frickie house in 1901. The garage in back is not part of the original structure. It was added on five years later. It is a house that almost blends into small hill it sits on and shrouded in greenery. Then walk one block north to 636 East and one are greeted with the William E. Martin house built in 1903. In this edition on our series of video clips of the Oak Park homes of Frank Loyd Wright we show two houses that are neighbors. And they offer an interesting contrast. The older of the two 400 Forest was not originally designed by right. He was hired in 1908 to build the garage that you can kind of see from a couple of the shots. Then the following year Wright was hired to remodel the house. He replaced the roof (which was again replaced in the 1950's) added the porch and replaced the doors and entry. The entire interior was also redone by Wright . And right next door at 318 we have the Arthur B. Heurtley House, Named after the banker that commissioned it's construction in 1902. Oak Park Illinois is home to many beautiful houses that dot its tree lined streets. Including more than twenty homes (and one church) designed by world renowned architect Frank Loyd Wright. Over a dozen of them are located in a historic district just north of the downtown Lake Street. The Thomas House was built in 1901 and is right across the street from a lovely little park where Shakesphere is performed during the summer. Chicago, Illinois is one of America's legendary cities. The third largest city in the United States began in 1833 as a settlement of 340 people along the shores of Lake Michigan. Its French-Classical style includes rose gardens, promenades, and shady elm trees. Chicagos annual music festivals - jazz, blues, and gospel singing - are all held in Grant Park. Within Grant Park is the Clarence Buckingham Fountain. This pink marble Rococo fountain was designed and built in 1927 as a memorial to Clarence Buckingham. The four bronze sea horses in the fountain represent the four states that border Lake Michigan: Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. On the opposite side of the park is the Art Institute of Chicago. Within its galleries are paintings by some of the worlds most famous artists, including Monet, Matisse and Van Gogh. It briefly reopened in 1994 after a multi-million dollar renovation. It currently serves as a venue for the Roundabout Theatre Company, with a 900 seat theatre equipped with two full service bars. The original doors with the Studio 54 logo still remain. The theatre originated as the Gallo Opera House by Fortune Gallo in 1927 for his San Carlo Opera Company. It opened on Feb 7, 1927 with the opera 'La Boheme'. It did not make it as an opera house; over the course of the next decade changed its name several times. It became known as the New Yorker Theatre in 1930, booking Ibsen's play 'The Vikings', but remained unsuccessful. From 1933 to 1936 it became a dinner theatre called the 'Casino de Paree' managed by Billy Rose. It was then the Palladium Theatre in 1936. The Federal Theatre project leased it for its productions and changed its name to the Federal Music Theatre in 1937. This video was taken on October 2 during our fall vacation in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Somehow the name "Shenandoah" just has such a beautiful ring to it, no wonder, since it means "beautiful daughter of the stars". We were staying in a condo in Massanutten, a ski area and did a number of day trips. Our first trip took us to Harrisonburg, a historic Virginia town, 15 minutes west of Massanutten. I started by interviewing the travel expert at the Harrisonburg Tourism Office and then set off on a little walking tour of the town. The town features various historic homes, and one of the most impressive buildings is the court house whose roof is crowned by a statue of the goddess of justice. After a nice lunch at an outdoor cafe we continued our exploration and drove southwards on a country road. Rolling farm country and lots of happy grazing cows surrounded us on this serene drive. About an hour later we arrived in Staunton, a picturesque city of about 28000 people in the southern Shenandoah Valley. Staunton has a beautiful main street (West Beverley Street) with many beautifully preserved historic buildings in different architectural styles. The most stunning one is the Masonic Building, reminiscent of a European medieval structure. Although Staunton goes back to 1747, the town experienced its heyday between 1880 and 1920, so the majority of the architecture is Victorian. Vivianne, an artist and environmental and animal activist (and joyous and loving collaborator in the Bridging Art Project), was born in St-Lambert, Province of Quebec, in the suburb of Montreal, Canada. She grew up with a desire to make a contribution to the world. At a young age she was already fascinated with curvilinear lines and splashes of colors. She also spent many nights wondering about the stars, the universe, and the purpose of existence and being. The very young artist filled countless hours drawing as a child. Her interests also extended to performing arts, and her mother encouraged her to pursue ballet and theatre, which she did for over twelve years. At seventeen years old, she suffered a serious car crash in Montreal, which put an end to her emerging profession as a ballerina with Les Ballet Moderne Du Quebec. Vivianne then studied Dramatic Art in college, going on to pursue acting and modeling for the following decade. She did a series of TV commercials and prints, which eventually led her to travel to Latin America and the USA. She fell in love with the United States and in 1985 decided to stay. Destined to become a painter, she emerged in 2001 after graduating Magna cum Laude while receiving a BFA from San Francisco State University with a minor in creative writing in 1999-2000.
