Quake rattles southwestern US Tijuana - A deadly magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck northwestern Mexico on Sunday, rocking buildings as far away as Arizona and southern California, as a string of aftershocks rattled the US and Mexican Pacific Coast. Emergency workers struggled to respond to damage and injuries after the tremor knocked out power, damaged water lines and snarled traffic. In the border city of Mexicali, located 60km from the tremor's epicenter, a man was killed when his home collapsed on top of him, Mexican rescue workers told AFP. Another person was killed after running out from a home and being hit by a car in Mexicali, where 100 people were injured during the quake, Mexico's director of civil protection Alfredo Escobedo told CNN. Roads cracked, telephone poles were toppled and sides were ripped off buildings in Mexicali, a city of 900 000 inhabitants that serves as the capital of Baja California state. "This is a large quake with the potential of causing damage because it is not far from a population center," said Carlos Valdez, director of the National Seismological Service. A firefighter at a station just outside Mexicali told the Los Angeles Times that fires caused by the quake destroyed at least six homes after damaging propane tanks and severing electricity lines. Several homes near the Cerro Prieto volcano some 31km from the quake's epicenter sank into the group as water rose up around them, according to the firefighter, Oscar Silas. US and Mexican ...

At 3:34 am local time, today, February 27th, a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. According to Chilean authorities, over 400 people are now known to have been killed. The earthquake also triggered a Tsunami which is right now propagating across the Pacific Ocean, due to arrive in Hawaii in hours (around 11:00 am local time). The severity of the Tsunami is still not known, but alerts are being issued across the Pacific.

The military has set up aid distribution points for food and water in quake-hit towns across Chile, as the list of identified dead and missing persons grow longer. The government says nearly 800 people were killed in the magnitude 8.8 earthquake, but many fear the figure will increase in the coming days. In the town of Constitucion efforts are under way to locate those who have been missing since Saturday's quake. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports. (Mar 3, 2010)

Yikes! Just how big was the magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile? One scientist says the shaking may have affected the entire planet by shifting Earth on its axis. This possibly may have shortened the length of each day on Earth by about 1.26 microseconds. Using a complex model JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27, 2010 quake. If his figures are correct, the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis (the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet). By comparison, Gross said the same model estimated the 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the length of day by 6.8 microseconds and shifted Earth's axis by 2.32 milliarcseconds (about 7 centimeters, or 2.76 inches). Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004 Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010 Chilean earthquake was located in Earth's mid-latitudes, which makes it more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis. Second, the fault responsible for the 2010 Chiliean earthquake dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 ...
2010 Chile earthquake The 2010 Chile earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), rating a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasting for about three minutes. The cities experiencing the strongest shaking—VIII (Destructive) on the Mercalli intensity scale—were Talcahuano, Arauco, Lota, Chiguayante, Cañete, and San Antonio. The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VII (Very Strong).Tremors were felt in many Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza and La Rioja. Tremors were felt as far north as the city of Ica in southern Peru. Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries, and a tsunami was recorded, with amplitude of up to 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in) high, in the sea at Valparaíso, Chile. President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe". She also confirmed the deaths of at least 723 people. Many more have been reported missing. info from wikipedia March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Andreas Rietbrock, a professor of Earth Sciences at Liverpool University in the UK, talks with Bloomberg's Erik Schatzker about the impact of the Chilean earthquake on the Earth's axis and length of day.
