China's Beijing-Tibet Highway is the scene of a massive traffic jam. It's lasted for nine days and slowed traffic to a snail's pace. Traffic is back to normal now, but more than ten-thousand vehicles were stuck for several days in the gridlock and 30-thousand people were stranded. Residents living nearby took advantage of the situation, becoming mobile food vendors selling meals to stranded drivers at high prices. Authorities say the traffic jam was caused primarily by maintenance construction that started last week. The road work is expected to be last through mid-September. Traffic congestion is a major concern for Chinese drivers, and critics warn that poor road planning is adding to the congestion.

"A traffic jam in northern China lasting 9 days, has finally cleared up. The gridlock stretched for over 62 miles on the National Expressway 110, which was reportedly caused by construction on the nearby alternate highway, the Beijing-Tibet Expressway. Broken-down vehicles and minor accidents also added to the mess. "

"Straddling" bus--a cheaper, greener and faster alternative to commute A big concern on top of urban transportation planner's mind is how to speed up the traffic: putting more buses on the road will jam the roads even worse and deteriorate the air; building more subway is costly and time consuming. Well, here is an cheaper, greener and fast alternative to lighten their mind up a bit: the straddling bus, first exhibited on the 13th Beijing International High-tech Expo in May this year. In the near future, the model is to be put into pilot use in Beijing's Mentougou District (bjnews). (The official site of the high-tech expo put it as 3D fast bus, which I think is more confusing, for now I'll just call it the straddling bus.) Proposed by Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co., Ltd, the model looks like a subway or light-rail train bestriding the road. It is 4-4.5 m high with two levels: passengers board on the upper level while other vehicles lower than 2 m can go through under. Powered by electricity and solar energy, the bus can speed up to 60 km/h carrying 1200-1400 passengers at a time without blocking other vehicles' way. Also it costs about 500 million yuan to build the bus and a 40-km-long path for it, only 10% of building equivalent subway. It is said that the bus can reduce traffic jams by 20-30%. www.chinahush.com

We got stuck in a monster traffic jam on the way to the Great Wall.
People, people everywhere! This is part two of our 2010 China experience. Unwittingly, we began our China trip on one of the busiest Chinese public holidays, the May Labour Day Golden Week. We came to Beijing for the scenic and historic sights but ended up seeing more people than scenery, multitude of tourists and locals. Overall, it was a wonderful and rewarding trip. We return home with lots and lots of pictures, plenty of fond memories and 'life changing' experiences. Just to name a few: Walking for an hour along the jammed highway to reach the Great Wall, and back the same way after dark to the coach; Losing one of the tour members in the crowd inside the forbidden city; Not able to get out of the jam-packed subway train at our stop; Fight for a taxi with five hundred other people; Ordered our food but cannot find a table to sit down; A dozen people looking over my shoulder while I eat my food, ready to grab my seat as soon as they think I am done; and best of all, long line-ups to the toilets only to find out they are all overflowed. Beijing welcomes you!
On Shaanxi Highway, trucks are creating a 50 Kilometer jam in place for more than a month.
Traffic in front of the North Rail Station in Shenyang, China. It was raining, so traffic was worse than usual, but a typical day wouldn't be much better than this. Shot from the Times Plaza Hotel across from the rail station
All of the clips were from a single10-minute drive from the public school we teach at back to our apartment in Weihai, China. We taught at 3 different schools every week, and a guy at the Daguanghua school drives us around. Featuring: aggressive traffic jam, jaywalking families, crossing 4 lanes of traffic, a near-fatal left-hand turn, and a run-in with the police. I can't believe this all happened in one 10-minute drive; but it is like this EVERY DAY...
