www.creativeguitarstudio.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question: Q: I watched your country guitar seminar video on youtube and was wondering if you could do more of a beginners level video all about playing basic country bluegrass strumming. I just seem to only strum guitar with one or two basic strum patterns and could really use something fresh in my playing. Thanks, Jake - New Albany, IN. Basic beginner level strumming is a great way to develop the popular open position chords on guitar. And, the country/bluegrass style works fantastic to help players achieve this. I've composed a very straight-forward piece in the country rhythm style. Hopefully it will help you learn a few new techniques to use in your own playing! The complete lesson article for this video, (along with a powertab chart of the chord changes plus a FREE MP3 audio play-along track of the progression heard at the start of the video), is available on the Creative Guitar Studio website. Midi file and backing track for this video are available on my website at www.lot2learn.com This piece started out as a little improvisation exercise and I decided to post it to demonstrate how to build and construct solos while playing over just a simple 4 chord vamp. The chords used are gminor9 to abminor9 to fminor9 to Gb7. I like to make a statement in the right hand for the G-9 and then either echo it up 1 step for the Ab-9 or somehow "complete the sentence" so those two chords make up one complete phrase. Then I make a different statement for the F-9 and complete that phrase using chord and scale tones on the Gb7. The funk rhythm allows many different types of shaping of the solo lines and developing various motifs. The key for me is to tell a story without too much "mindless rambling". I want to try and make each statement meaningful and hopefully in the context of the whole piece there is continuity by using groups of phrases that work well with each other and lead the listener on a journey. I will try and ad some additional notations if time permits. A very LARGE thank you to Jamal at www.midikeyz.com for providing his outstanding graphic piano keyboard that you see in my video displaying the notes as I play them. He is one talented fellow! The Fender Rhodes sound is being provided by Lounge Lizard software. Backing track done using a simple drum loop and I added some organ patch bass line with chord comping.
Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: Can you do a video that looks at the really cool sounding chords played by guys like Larry Carlton and Lee Ritienour? I always hear them in the smooth jazz tunes, and it sounds like you play them in your music too. By the way, how can I buy your album? I looked on your website and on itunes, but there are no digital downloads for your stuff? Thanks, Reno, NYC A: I do have my CD available from off of my website as a digital download. Follow the link below if you're interested in getting a copy: www.creativeguitarstudio.com As for the chord types used in this style of music, they are mostly triad with a bass note style. This lesson is a continuation of our study of Jimi Hendrix's Chord And Rhythm techniques. In this video we put to use what we learned in the first video by applying it in learning Hendrix's intro to "Little Wing". This lesson is taught in standard tuning. If you would like to play along with a Hendrix recording, you will need to tune your guitar down a half step. Please go to main site at http to watch the first video in this series as well as many other video guitar lessons ALL FREE. www.guitarlessons365.com This lesson is the first of two concentrating on the chord style of Jimi Hendrix. His chord work seemed to walk the line between rhythm and lead. I have broken-up his approach to rhythm with a few examples in the first video and in the second video we will use those examples to learn the intro to "Little Wing". This lesson was recorded with the guitar tuned to standard EADGBE tuning. Jimi's tunes one half step below standard tuning for this song, so if you wanna play along with him just tune every string down a half step. I taught the lesson in standard tuning because that is what most guitarist's play in. Please head on over to the main site http to see many other FREE video lessons that are being updated every day. Your support at the main site is what will keep these FREE daily lessons coming. THANKS!! Lesson Taught By: Carl Brown

Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question about, "How to Play Reggae Guitar Style." I have been asked to join a reggae band, but I have very little experience playing reggae guitar. I would like to know the following - What is the correct strum direction? Is it up or down, Ive heard differing opinions on this. Can you please clarify. - When it comes to soloing what are the main scales that players use in this style? - Sometimes in Marley tunes I hear a muted scratch technique. Can you please explain this technique. - What are the main chord types used and how many strings are usually played? Some of the songs I have to learn have thin sounding chords, but other songs have very full sounding chords. Any help you could give me on this subject would be very much appreciated including artists I should start paying attention to. Ive just put together a lesson concept that Ive been thinking about doing for years. These are chord licks that can be played over progressions commonly found in jazz standards. Chord licks are ways of playing chord progressions in a melodic style. They will make your comping more interesting and some work well as intros and endings.

View tabs @ www.freeguitarvideos.com Progessive Big Band Chords is a free jazz guitar lesson by Guy Fenocchi where you will learn how to play four variations of an F chord. Many times the chord names in a big band chord progession can be daunting. Luckily, instead of remembering what a Fmaj7#11 is you can use a more common chord as a substitute. We'll start with power chords and then progress on to harder barre chords and comping style chords.

I had the opportunity to pick up a few Lenny Dee style tips from a friend and Hammond artist, Chris Anderson back in the 1970's. Chris studied with Lenny and shared how this great artist developed a rhythm using just the Hammond organ with no need for a drummer! Lenny pulled it off marvelously using alternating chords, pedals and right hand talent that will likely never be duplicated again. Here is the best explanation I have on how this was told to me over thirty (30) years ago.

playing the blues 1 - two example choruses with substitutions. These two solos were played in the single note style of Wes Montgomery. He often substituted the dom7 chord with the dorian (m7) chord. (eg F7 = Cm7). It´s somewhat like playing II-V progression instead of just improvising over the dominant chord. Transcriptions available: www.play-jazz.de

After getting several emails specifically asking about this pattern I bumped it up in the original outline for how these videos would procede. The "Six White Horses" pattern is one of Lester's staple patterns and I believe this is very close to what he was playing and hope this video will be of assistance of any who wish to learn it. Again, please feel free to email me at chrissharp80@hotmail.com if there are any questions about this. Thank you all for your support, it makes these videos a lot funner for me to make. You will learn the chords for a 1-6-2-5 progression that can be used as an intro or turnaround for a jazz standard. We will also talk about using syncopated rhythms. Syncopation is an important part of the jazz comping style. Mixing syncopated with non-syncopated rhythms will give a sense of where the beat is.

The C-Chord is one of my favorites because you can really get into a groove playing it (this is because of the accents possible i this chord) Even in songs played out of G positon are funner to play if you have a C-Chord that you can fully accent. just practicing at home. Finger style chord melody with little direction. Just playing some simple changes. www.steviesnacks.com - If you've always wondered how to play those fat, thick, Hendrix and SRV style chords, this lesson will take you through the chord sequence used in the original ballad I wrote and used to demonstrate my Fender Blues Junior Amp. This style of playing is a mix of chords and lead techniques and when played correctly, it results in a very soulful rhythm style. In this lesson, I walk you through the basic chords that the sequence uses, and then elaborate on how I connect them with Hendrix style hammer-ons and little lead licks to transition from chord to chord. Lastly I talk about the important of timing of certain key notes in the sequence, and the importance of accenting certain notes and beats in order to bring out the most soulful elements of this playing style.
In this video, instructor Tim Huffman will show you several ways to transition between chords, based on the style and rhythm of the song. Videos here are in parts - for free downloads of the full, uncut, high quality videos, go to www.ivideosongs.com
I love the feeling of deep-house-garage ala Masters At Work, wich is heavily jazz and cuban-influenced, often featuring "traditional" instruments and a LOT of amazing, soulful voices. They always seems to have wicked changes, so here I am jammin to a beat I made consisting of two chords, lasting 2 bars each. ----A lil bit of boring theory---- The first chord is C-Db-F-Ab-C, wich can be considered as Db Major 7 with the 7th dropped. The second chord is the same... but a major 3rd higher. So the same thing won't "work" for the two chords. (ie. as it could if it was a 4th or a 5th higher) Those chords can sound like many other things, it all depends on wich mode you wanna use on the bass: ie the first thing I use is Bb dorian (how original !), wich makes the first chord sound like Bb Minor 9. Jammin this way makes you hear and mix different colors, and you gotta concentrate on making "real" house basslines, watching the shuffle feel, and finding cool root motions. BTW, after I played this I realized the first bassline is VERY similar to "Starlight" by Juan Atkins xd
