A Brief Description of where I stayed in Hong Kong during My South East Asia tour of 2009. - Chungking Mansions - A huge, ramshackle high rise dump in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui caters to virtually all needs- from finding a bed and a curry lunch to changing your gold coins and getting your hair cut- but you may be put off by the undercurrent of sleaze and the peculiar odor of cooking fat, incense and sewage. The Building's infamy is fuelled by tales both tall and true of conflagrations, crimes and unclaimed bodies; everyone should come here once.
Cae la tarde en Hong Kong. Mucha gente pasa al lado mío. Son desconocidos, aunque algún día seremos amigos. Estoy cerca de las legendarias Chungking mansions. Mi sitio favorito de Kowloon. He tardado dos años en volver pero al final he vuelto.

I found that I am addicted to Ranbir Kapoor, Bollywood movies and ChungKing Mansions. Indian culture is really fascinating. If you live in Hong Kong or are planning to travel in here, I recommend you to put down ChungKing Mantions on your schedule. You won't be disappointed.

One of Hong Kong/Kowloon's oldest and most infamous buildings, watch as I take a walk through the lobby of ChungKing Mansions. See phone vendors and Indian food stalls galore. Watch as people queue up for the elevator. Gasp in awe as I avoid someone trying to hawk their restaurant to me. For more on this, check out www.adventuresofagoodman.com

The subtle joys of elevated toilet paper.
An estimated 20 percent of sub-Saharan African phones originate from Chugking Mansions, a dilapidated complex of thousand flats, guest houses and businesses located on some of Hong Kong's prime real estate. Traders from all over the world come here to source cheap Chinese goods, but overwhelmingly the trade has been in mobile phones destined for Africa. Mohamed Ali Diallo moved his phone dealership from the Chinese mainland three months ago. [Mohamed Ali, Owner, Brothers Co. Ltd]: "Chungking Mansions is very well known and is, I can say, the other end of the bridge linking Africa to China and most of the phones going to Africa, 20-30 percent came from this house." As a free trade area one trader who asked not to be named said buying phones already in Hong Kong cuts out the hassle of Chinese customs. "Sometimes you feel, why go through the stress of going over to the factories (on mainland China) yourself when you could have the middle man do that? So it's an easy way to for us to come over to Hong Kong and get these things easily from the locals." Having studied Chungking for years, Professor Gordon Matthews says traders come here because Hong Kong provides a degree of protection. [Gordon Matthews, Chinese University Professor]: "Mobile phones, from what I hear, China is not to be trusted. Because you might get goods that don't work very well. Hong Kong tends to be trusted much more and many of the dealers, most of the dealers give some sort of guarantee. You can much ...

This short film is a video response to the Cantocourse series made by Cecilie Gamst Berg in her on-going quest to make Cantonese a world language. I applaud her mission. Speaking as a student of Cantonese and other languages, Cantonese rocks!!! It is a beautiful, elegant, and completely logical language. And anyone, especially anyone living in Hong Kong, who doesn't share in this language is missing out. Regardless, thus impressed by Cecilie Gamst Berg, I sought out her first novel BLONDE LOTUS and read it. It is an intriguing and heartfelt book that doesn't hold back anything. This video response is a review of the book in Cantonese at the Chungking Mansion, in which parts of the book are set. My tones are bad, and I'm butchering a lot of the Cantonese, but learning a language, by definition, means making mistakes. This short film is also the 15th film in my on-going quest to make one short film per day about life in Hong Kong. Both Cecilie Gamst Berg and the Chungking Mansion are Hong Kong institutions, so I feel like I killed many birds with one stone. If more foreigners in Hong Kong were like her, things would be so much better. Thank you, Cecilie. You rock! Enjoy!!!

This is the (in)famous Chungking Mansion. You know what? I don't see it only as grungy or dirty (well, it is...) but I find it fascinating. A Time magazine article called it "The best example of globalization in Asia." For a continent of road dogs, that says something. Lot of Indians, Pakistanis and Africans among the European, Japanese, Thai, Aussie and US/Canadian backpackers. Some awesome Indian food and good forex rates. Sure as hell beat the rates I saw at the Hong Kong Airport! Good location, too. Was designed as luxury housing for the Chinese. Compared to how most of the world lives, maybe this is still a luxury housing block?

A video passed to me showing five hostels under the same roof in Tsim Sha Tsui (a district of Hong Kong) The reason they have so many names for just one hostel is so that they get more listings on hostel booking sites, so when you do a search for a hostel in Hong Kong you get, say, ten listings and five are for the same place. Make sure to check the address when you search for hostels in Hong Kong! The same technique is used for hostels in Chungking Mansions, which is two doors down from Mirador Mansions. The video clearly shows one check-in counter for five hostels these include the: USA Hotel New Garden Hostel Travellers Friendship House Kowloon New Hostel Mirador Hostel I also counted six (possible seven) separate violations of the fire safety code. See if you can find them. :) Below is a link to an article by The Standard, one of two English language newspapers in Hong Kong, discussion Mirador Mansions: www.thestandard.com.hk The truth is
Chungking Mansions is a building located at 36-44 Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. The building is well known as nearly the cheapest accommodation in Hong Kong with a single bed of US $8 one night. Though the building is supposedly residential, it is made up of many independent low-budget hotels, shops, and other services. The strange atmosphere of this building is sometimes called by some "the scent of Kowloon's Walled City". Chungking Mansions features a labyrinth of guesthouses, curry restaurants, African bistros, clothing shops, sari stores, and foreign exchange offices. It often acts as a large gathering place for some of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, particularly Indians, Middle Eastern people, Nepalese, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nigerians, Europeans, Americans, Pakistanis, and many other peoples of the world. The building was completed in 1961, at which time Chinese residents predominated. Now, after more than four decades of use, there are an estimated 4000 people living in the Mansions. Chungking Mansions is 17 stories tall and consists of 5 blocks, A, B, C, D, and E. There are two elevators in each block, one of which serves even-numbered floors, the other one odd-numbered floors; there is often a queue for this lift. The price of a flat in the Chungking Mansions ranged from HK$1000000 to HK$2000000 as of August 2006. While the Chungking Mansions are nominally intended for residential use, there is a large variety of commercial establishments in ...

Video shot in Hong Kong in November 2005 - Kowloon Chungking Mansions. I was staying in the Hyatt Regency (now gone)and listening to the Benjamin Zephaniah piece, walking out to a bar through the crowded streets. Plugged into Zephaniah's words and experiencing the intense amount of multicultured people, all rushing about their business, caused me to take an uncut clip exactly the length of the song. It was an intense and stimulating experience.

Chungking Mansions: a notorious lower-depths market and cheap hostel located in a crumbling high-rise in Kowloon, has gained much fame/infamy in her time as a hive of scum and villainy. The truth is far less astounding, as our heroes find out. Now, if only they can find their way out...
