Complete video at: fora.tv Think Americans are in debt? Take a look at Great Britain. Economist Richard Wolff predicts that Britain will be the next victim of the global recession, citing that the average British family currently faces a debt amounting to 170% of its annual income. ----- Join Economics Professor Richard Wolff, University of Massachusetts, for a screening of his film, "Capitalism Hits the Fan," and a Q and A. Professor Wolff breaks down the root causes of today's economic crisis and traces its source to the 1970s, when wages began to stagnate and American workers were forced into a spiral of borrowing and debt. By placing the crisis in this framework, Wolff argues that proposals for government "bailouts," offers of stimulus packages, and calls for increased market regulation will not address the real causes of the crisis. He suggests that far more fundamental change is necessary to avoid future catastrophes. Richly illustrated with motion graphics, "Capitalism Hits the Fan" is a superb introduction to the unraveling economic crisis for ordinary citizens. - The New School Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he taught economics from 1973 to 2008. On March 4th, 2010, the National Day of Action for Public Education, Hunter College (CUNY) students and faculty join nationwide protests against cuts to higher education by mounting a demonstration on their New York City Campus. After being told by the police that they were not allowed to use microphones, they complied and got their messages across by screaming at the top of their lungs. Apart from minor disruptions through non-Hunter College students (what is your agenda, New School for Social Research?), the protest was entirely peaceful.

It is hard to believe that New York City was once a small Dutch settlement. An old document shows that Dutch settlers did, in fact, pay for this land. The document can be seen at the citys South Street Seaport Museum. Martin Berense is head of the Netherlands National Archives. He says the letter tells about a ship arriving in Amsterdam. The ships operator said, The settlement is going well. And, we bought the island of Manhattan for sixty guilders. The letter is on loan for New Yorks four hundredth anniversary. Berendse says the letter tells about the settlement, which became New York. The museum also has a map of the settlement. Another map shows just how small Manhattan was. That changed when Britain took control. Historian Barry Lewis says the British filled in part of the East River with waste because more land was needed. BARRY LEWIS: We had only about one hundred thousand people at the beginning of the nineteenth century. By 1875, the population of Manhattan is over one-million people. By 1910, over two million people are living in Manhattan island. The Brooklyn Bridge was built in eighteen eighty-three so people could move to Long Island, where land was less costly. Lewis says people crossed the East River by carriage or boat. Or they walked across the bridge. He says New Yorks underground trains led to the development of land in areas far from the center of the city. Many businesses needed to be in Manhattan. So developers started building up, creating the ...

1915 Edison Manufacturing Co. The Claremont Theatre 3320-3338 Broadway (aka 536-540 West 135th Street) in Manhattanville. The village of Manhattnville was established in 1806 in a valley at the crossroads of Bloomingdale Road and Manhattan Street (Broadway and 125th Street). The community was the site of churches, a grade school, and Manhattan College (1853). A ferry terminus on the Hudson River, a mill, and a brewery contributed to a thriving enclave that had about five hundred residents at mid century. - (excerpt) Karen E. Markoe / Encyclopedia of New York City - Edited by Kenneth T. Jackson ''The Claremont Theater is one of the oldest structures in New York City planned specifically to exhibit motion pictures, originally called ''photoplays.'' Located in north Manhattanville, at the southeast corner of Broadway and 135th Street, the theater opened in November 1914. Commissioned by Arlington C. Hall and Harvey M. Hall of the Wayside Realty Company, it was designed in the neo-Renaissance style by Gaetano Ajello, an architect best known for apartment buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The building has three distinct fronts, including a clipped corner façade where the auditorium's entrance was originally located. This distinctive arrangement enhanced the theater's visibility and increased the amount of retail space. The corner, consequently, received the most elaborate decorative treatment and is embellished with an elegant low relief depicting an early motion ...

Dean Friedman (born May 23, 1955, New Jersey) is an American singer-songwriter who plays piano, keyboard, guitar and other instruments, including the harmonica. Raised in Paramus, New Jersey, Dean Friedman received his first guitar when he was 9, in 1964, and started writing songs. When he was a teenager, he played weddings and bar mitzvahs as part of Marsha and the Self-Portraits, sent out demos and majored in music at City College of New York where one of his teachers was guitarist David Bromberg. By the time he was 20, in 1975, he had a manager and a recording contract with Cashman and West's Lifesong label. In the USA he is described as a one-hit wonder, following his 1977 hit song "Ariel", which reached # 26 on the Billboard national pop charts and stayed in the charts for eight weeks. "Ariel" has been described as a "quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, music loving, vegetarian Jewish girl", from Paramus, New Jersey, where he grew up. It is the only Billboard top 40 song to contain the word Paramus. It describes the girl Ariel, "standing by the [since dismantled] waterfalls at Paramus Park", one of the many shopping malls in Paramus. The quarters she was collecting for "friends of BAI" referrs to the New York radio station WBAI-FM, and their listener association. Although "Ariel" did not make the UK charts, "Lucky Stars", a duet with Denise Marsa taken from his second album "Well, Well", Said The Rocking Chair, made # 3 in the UK in late 1978, and both "Woman of Mine" and "Lydia" were lesser chart hits there. Dean also provided vocals for a series of television commercials in the 1970's in the New York City metro area. The electronics chain "Crazy Eddie's" hired him to sing their 'doo-wop' style commercial: "When you think you're ready, come down to Crazy Eddie's". Unlike many one-hit-wonders, Friedman has continued to write and perform songs into the 2000s.
