CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- Gunmen stormed two neighboring homes and massacred 13 young people at a birthday party in the latest large-scale attack in this violent border city, even as a new government strategy seeks to restore order with social programs and massive police deployments. Attackers opened fire on about four dozen partygoers gathered for a 15-year-old boy's birthday party. Most of the victims were high school students, a survivor said. "Why, my God, why," shouted the mother of Daniel Figueroa, 16, after she identified her son's body. Residents of Ciudad Juarez, one of the world's deadliest cities, no longer go out much to celebrate because of a violent turf war between the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels, who frequently attack their rivals in bars, restaurants, drug rehab centers and other public places

Mexico's government is showing no signs of winning its war against the drug gangs. It has cost at least 28000 lives since Felipe Calderon, the president, took power less than four years ago, and the numbers keep rising. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez joined police on patrol in Ciudad Juarez, one of Mexico's most violent cities, where one emergency call follows another.

A noon shootout left six police officers and a civilian dead on the streets of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Friday, city officials said. Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said five of the dead were federal police officers and one was a female city officer, all part of the joint police task force formed to combat drug violence in the border town. Another federal officer was gravely wounded, Reyes said, and a city officer was wounded but not with life-threatening injuries. A civilian was hit by shrapnel but those injuries were also not serious, he added. Reyes said the incident began when two patrol cars, one from federal police and one from city police, stopped several people they had been investigating.
A classified report provided by the government to senators estimated 22743 people have died since President Felipe Calderon declared war on Mexicos drug cartels in December 2006, the press reported. Government sources confirmed the figure to Efe, but they insisted that the report was classified and would not provide further details, adding that the number includes executions (killings by organized crime groups), attacks and clashes. Press tallies had put the number of people killed in drug-related violence since Calderon took office at 18000. The classified report provided by the National Security Cabinet to senators lists 20868 killed in hits, 160 deaths in attacks and 1715 deaths in shootouts, the Reforma newspaper reported. The most violent year of Calderons presidency, according to the report, was 2009, when 8928 people were killed. The classified report estimates the death toll so far this year at 2904. Chihuahua led the way as the state with the highest number of killings, followed by Sinaloa, Guerrero, Baja California and Michoacan. Ciudad Juarez, a border metropolis in Chihuahua, is Mexicos most violent city, followed by Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, and Tijuana, a border city in Baja California. Government Secretary Fernando Gomez Mont answered a reporters question about the existence of a classified report by saying that a figure was discussed at a meeting Monday with legislators, but he claimed he could not recall the number. Calderon, who made ...
Charles Bowden on Murder City: Ciudad Juárez and the Global Economys New Killing Fields A new report by the Mexican government has found the death toll from the so-called drug war is much higher than previously thought. Nearly 23000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since a US-backed military crackdown on cartels began more than three years ago. The report said 2009 was the deadliest year in the drug war, with over 9600 people killed. The death toll is on track to be even higher in 2010 with more than 3300 people in the first three months of this year alone. We speak to reporter Charles Bowden, author of Murder City: Ciudad Juárez and the Global Economys New Killing Fields.
Last month, a US consulate worker and her husband were killed in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juárez. The gunfire sent scores of journalists scrambling across the bridge from El Paso and prompted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to pledge more than $300 million to help border cities like Juárez recover from the blight of drug violence. But the spotlight on Juárez masks a broader trend in Mexico: since President Felipe Calderón launched a crackdown on cartels in 2007, the violence has spread south from the border, emptying tourist destinations and shaking the country's largest cities. New cartels have sprung up in once-quiet states and veteran cartels have grown more violent. Calderón has succeeded in capturing and killing key cartel leaders, or jefes, but his drug war has left the entire country dangerously in disarray. "It's obvious that the drug cartels also operate here in the capital," said security expert José Luís Piñeyro, speaking from Mexico City. "We have a major international airport through which they receive drugs from Colombia, weapons from the United States and methamphetamines or pre-cursor chemicals" from all over the world. Earlier this week, Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard admitted that narcos "come and go" as they please in the capital of 20 million. US Drug Enforcement Administration officials privately admit that cartel leaders live in the city's lush suburbs--"they just happen to be smarter about who they kill and when" than in other parts of ...

Barack Obama has expressed outrage over the murder of two Americans and a Mexican linked to the US consulate in the drug war-plagued Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez. The State Department has allowed families of other consulate staff to leave. The attack on the US couple began with a car chase and ended in front of the main border crossing into El Paso, an area heavily patrolled by soldiers, local newspaper El Diario reported. The couples baby girl survived the attack. The Mexican spouse was murdered in an upscale neighborhood of the city when gunmen boxed in his car with other vehicles and shot him, according to a local newspaper photographer who soon arrived at the scene. His wife, who was following in a second car, was unhurt, but their two children were wounded.Calderon was already scheduled to visit Ciudad Juarez on Tuesday, his third trip there in a month, as he scrambles to find a way to deal with a surge in killings that 8000 troops and federal police on the ground have failed to curb. The drug war has killed more than 4600 people in the key manufacturing city in two years, and constant scenes of bullet-ridden vehicles and bodies lying in pools of blood have prompted many middle-class residents to flee.Across Mexico, drug war violence is at its worst level ever, and many US students have heeded warnings not to cross the border this year for their annual spring break vacation.A burst of drug gang clashes killed at least 27 peopleincluding four who were beheaded—this ...
The federal government is advising Canadians to stay away from northern Mexican cities to avoid drug cartel warfare -- violence that could be linked to drug smuggling in Cd Juarez Mexican authorities say three workers from the American consulate were mistakenly shot on Sunday in and around the city of Ciudad Juarez by drug cartel assassins. They were among nearly 50 people who were murdered in drug-related violence in Mexico over the weekend. That led to a travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, warning Canadians to avoid Ciudad Juarez, where federal troops are battling drug cartels. An estimated 18000 people have been killed in Mexico in just four years. Though Mexico is a long way from BC, the illicit drug economies are linked. On March 5, RCMP in Port Hardy, BC, seized a sailboat loaded with more than 1000 kilograms of cocaine worth about $100 million. It had sailed to Vancouver Island from Panama. A Victoria man and a Mexican national were arrested and later charged in connection with what police believe could be an international drug-smuggling operation. "The actual quantity is clearly indicative of both localized and national -- and potentially international -- distribution of cocaine from British Columbia," Supt. Brian Cantera of the RCMP's Federal Enforcement Branch told CTV News. Cocaine can't be manufactured in Canada, but its importation is thought to be financed in BC by marijuana farms and synthetic drug factories. Police can't ...
Suspected drug cartel hit squads gunned down three people connected to the US consulate in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, a US official says. They include a consulate employee and her husband, both American, and the Mexican husband of another employee. President Barack Obama said he was "outraged" by the drive-by shootings. It is not yet clear if they were specifically targeted, but the US has authorised employees at some consulates to send family members out of the area. The six consulates are in the border cities of Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey and Matamoros. Mexico is battling a drug war that has killed some 18000 people since 2006. Ciudad Juarez is a major flashpoint in the battle between Mexican drug gangs over trafficking routes to the US. More than 2600 people were murdered there in drug-related violence last year alone. Social event The three victims were killed in drive-by shootings in two separate attacks on Saturday afternoon, a US official said on condition of anonymity, citing privacy concerns. "The president is deeply saddened and outraged by the news," White House National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement. "In concert with Mexican authorities, we will work tirelessly to bring their killers to justice," he added. A relative has identified the American couple as 35-year-old Lesley Enriquez and her husband Arthur Redelf, 34, of El Paso, Texas. Their one-year-old baby was found unharmed in the ...
Felipe Calderon, Mexico's president, has promised a new security plan for the city of Ciudad Juarez, which is at the centre of the government's battle against drug cartels. Calderon has also named a new special prosecutor to focus on crimes against journalists. Nearly 90 per cent of murders of reporters go unsolved in Mexico, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Al Jazeera met Luz Soza, a crime reporter in Ciudad Juarez. Here's her story in her own words.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) - The mayor of a violent Mexican border city said Monday he fears a shooting that killed 16 students at a party may have been random because the victims were "good kids" with no apparent ties to drug gangs. The death toll of the weekend massacre in Ciudad Juarez, one of the deadliest cities in the world, rose to 16 after three more victims died at hospitals, according to the Chihuahua state attorney general's office. The young people were gathered to watch a boxing match Saturday night when two trucks drove up loaded with armed men who opened fire. Some people were shot as they tried to flee and their bodies were found near neighboring homes. The victims' ages ranged from 15 to 20. Ciudad Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said police were still trying to determine the motive and had not ruled out that any of the victims were involved with drugs. However, he said they seemed to be "good kids, students, athletes." Witnesses and relatives insisted the young people were targeted by mistake or randomly. If that's the case, Reyes said it would be unprecedented even for the violent Ciudad Juarez, where rampant drug warfare is common. "There is no logical explanation, a concrete reason for this event. This is something that worries us, gratuitous or random criminal acts," Reyes told MVS Radio. "It goes way beyond what had been happening and puts Ciudad Juarez in even greater danger." Authorities have offered a reward of 1 million pesos ($76200) for ...
