Arab Tunisian Music - Malouf
How to play Andalusian classical music on OUD by Rachid Halihal. (or Arabo-Andalusian music, moussiqua al-âla) is a style of Arabic music found across North Africa, though it evolved out of the music of Andalusia between the 9th and 15th centuries, during a period known as Al-Andalus. It is now most closely associated with Algeria (Gharnati, San'a and al-Maalûf), though similar traditions are found in Morocco (Al-Âla and Gharnati), Tunisia and Libya (al-Maalûf). The al-Maalûf is a mix of Arabo-Andalusian music and Turkish music which does not exist in Morocco; Indeed, unlike Algeria, Tunisia and Libya as well as almost all other Arabic countries, the kingdom of Morocco has not been subject to secular Turkish presence that has influenced the music of these countries. The popular musics of chaabi developed in parallel to the classical expression.

The Track "Büyülü Dans" (Turkish for "The Enchanted Dance") is taken from the great Album "Burhan Öcal - Yeni Rüya" ("New Dream", 2005). Listen and enjoy it. Burhan Öcal is a world leading master percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Turkey who is a specialist in bringing new perspectives to traditional genres. His album "New Dream" transports the listener within this ivory tower. It is not about stealing from Turkish Classical Music, but bringing it new wealth, of breaking the bindings of its strict rules and allowing the music to breathe again with new life. The rich textures and sumptuous string melodies again become the height of luxury, as they were in the Ottoman Court when it ruled half the world. Resembling nothing so much as a rich Turkish dessert drizzled in sugar syrup at the end of a fine meal with friends, or silk sheets and a four-poster bed with a lover, "New Dream" is a rare sensual treat. This album is produced by the Tunisian born French musician, sound engineer and producer Smadj, highly respected for his knowledge of oriental music and for his digital innovations. With his latest project "New Dream" Burhan Öçal brings new wealth to Turkish classical music by breaking the bindings of its constricting rules and allowing the music to breathe again with new life. Burhan Öçal performed and recorded with internationally acclaimed musicians including Joe Zawinul, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Paco de Lucia, Natacha Atlas, Kronos Quartet, Eliot Fisk ...

The first in a series of sculptures that have been developed over the last ten years, whose inspiration is based on forms found in ancient Etruscan sculptures. The song "Ya Qalib Khalli Elhal" continues into "Attar" where I used original footage of flocks of Sterling (Storni) that form over Rome during their migration to Africa. First projection was for Beppe Grifeo's solo piano concert at the Elastic Arts Foundation, Chicago, Illinois, March 23, 2007. - genre: Projection Video title: "Ombre della Sera" and "Storni": Featuring the songs "Ya Qalib Khalli Elhal" and "Attar" by Beppe Grifeo date: 2007 material: Original Mini DV Footage trt = 10:13;02 artist: Marco Giovanni Ferrari - Notes on the Featured Artists: Virginio Ferrari is an internationally acclaimed contemporary sculptor, whos sculptures can be found on street corners and public parks, at universities and libraries, corporations and in private collections in Chicago, and all over the world. I had never been to Tunisia before, when I went there in March this year. In fact, I knew very little about the place. Of course, I knew that the great runner, Mohamed Gammoudi came from there, but that was about it. I also knew of a Jazz classic called, "A Night in Tunisia." But when I listened to it before I left, I did not get any feel of a real country that lived and breathed within its melody. The Harmony run has its own music of course. The torch carries you forward to meet many people, and to have many surprising and fulfilling experiences We had just finished the run in Tunis and were about to head off to Spain the next day. We had been on the road for about a week, and by then heard lots of local music, but nothing that captured, at least for me, the true heart of Tunisia. On our last night in Tunis we were staying in a sports complex on the outskirts of the city. We were shown around the place, and saw all of its facilities. As we went from room to room, some haunting music began to grow louder and louder. When the door opened at last to one small room, I found 6 men playing and singing traditional devotional music. It was like entering another world. It also felt like these men were sharing, through their music, the heart and soul of this wonderful country. I cannot remember the name of their group, but I cannot forget their music. -Utpal Marshall

Few Westerners ever fathomed the appeal of Umm Kulthum, the buxom, handkerchief-waving Egyptian singer who was known to her Middle Eastern fans as The Nightingale of the Nile. She had a stentorian contralto and a quavering wail that grated on the ears of those attuned to the trills of opera divas. Not only was her voice strong, but she perfected a technique of rephrasing passages. She once sang a single line in 52 different ways — that drove audiences to rapture. Her voice was a near-perfect instrument for expressing the sinuous quarter tones of Arabic music. The French described her performance at the Olympia Hall (28, Boulevard des Capucines, F-75009 Paris) in 1967 as an "emotional marathon". Rene Leibowitz conducts The Orchestra di Roma (early 1960s) -Tunis Nefta (2:42) -Valencia (5:23)Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire.

www.dynah.com http We just finished the video for Dynah's song "Promise." THE NAME 'DYNAH' was taken from Lewis Carroll's novel, Alice in Wonderland. The bands' name belongs to Alice's cat, Dinah (they altered the spelling, of course). The primary focus of the group is to share their common music interests with the world. In the spring/summer of 2005, the four came together after a brief hiatus and commenced in finishing writing songs for the Wake EP, scheduled to be released in Spring 2006. In little more than 2 years, Dynah has recorded a full-length album and toured heavily within Texas quickly gaining considerable attention not only from fans, but also from the music community. At present, they're in the final mixing stages of the Wake EP, and are writing new material for their next full-length album, while continuing to tour. Drummer, Mark Son, was born and pretty much grew up in Austin, so he's no stranger to the city's thriving music scene. He picked up some drumsticks when he was about twelve, started playing, and hasn't stopped since (well, for a few minutes at a time every now and then). His main influences include Stewart Copeland, Carter Beuford, Buddy Rich, Danny Carey, and Phil Selway. Some of Mark's favorite bands include Placebo, At the Drive In, Sparta, and The Mars Volta. Mark played in several local bands before meeting Phil and Mike Freitag, the band's original guitarist. Through a turn of events they started their own project and, in the process ...
North African night in Chicago, circa 2004. Song Baba Bahri - a sufi saint in Tunisia. Excerpt of the this song was modernized into pop music by Kazem Saher. Trance is called hadhra & it's repetititive head & torso movements in order to get closer to god. Totally different from Turkish whirling dervish, but hopes for the same result. Try not to do this at home unless you are well instructed to do this since one can get whiplash. (same effect as attending a headbangers concert). You want to keep the neck straight without hyperextending it. (Just trying to obtain effect of flipping the hair).
Music by: Roland Dyens (Tunisia,1955)
