Please attend a People's Coal Ash Hearing at the Roane State Community College on Thursday, September 2, at 5:30 PM. This hearing will be an opportunity for residents of Roane County--home of the Kingston coal ash disaster--and others from around the region to voice their opinions on the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rules to regulate coal ash at the federal level. An EPA representative will provide a brief overview of the proposed rule and all comments made during the hearing will be submitted to the EPA's official record. This video provides more background on the glaring need for this People's Hearing. Please contact Josh Galperin, josh@cleanenergy.org, with further questions. Courtesy of: www.youtube.com
Coal ash is hazardous waste, and must be regulated under the most protective provisions of America's hazardous waste laws now. Below you can learn more and take action like signing an online petition or writing your local representatives. Take Action: www.TennesseeRiver.org/CoalAshRegs.html
Take action at www.sierraclub.org/coalash. Right now communities across the country are exposed to heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury when hazardous materials from coal ash disposal sites seep into our drinking water, contributing to serious health problems.. The EPA is holding a public comment period on new, federally enforceable standards to protect Americans, but the coal industry is fighting back, trying to put their profits before our health. Help us give the EPA the support it needs to stand up to King Coal by sending a message at sierraclub.org/coalash
A new testing method by the US Environmental Protection Agency reveals that pollutants such as arsenic, antimony, chromium and selenium can leach from coal ash at levels dozens and sometimes hundreds of times greater than the federal drinking water standard. According to the EPAs new data, pollution from coal ash can shatter the "hazardous waste" threshold.
The TVA Kingston Coal Ash Disaster raised awareness of the dangers of toxic ash. But there are many other communities at risk. See for yourself how communities are being affected by fugitive dust, contaminated water and massive mountains of coal ash and why federal regulations are needed to protect them.
Coal-fired power plants are poisoning our rivers, lakes and streams with coal ash, a waste product that contains arsenic, mercury, and lead. Coal ash poisons fish, making them unsafe to eat. For decades, power plants have carelessly dumped coal ash into ponds and landfills that leak into our rivers and streams. It's time for the EPA to set strong safeguards that classify coal ash as hazardous waste—because that's exactly what it is.
Cynthia Gould reports on coal ash in Perry County and the impacts to local residents.
Just over a year ago in Roane County, Tennessee, the biggest industrial waste spill in US history occurred when a dam broke at the Tennessee Valley Authoritys Kingston power plant. More than a billion gallons of toxic coal ash flowed into a nearby community and into the Clinch and Emory rivers. TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore told affected residents that the utility would clean up the waste in six to eight weeks. But one year later, the Emory River remains closed to public traffic near the spill, ponds in the area are still clogged with several feet of coal ash, and dust from the ash is a chronic problem for local residents, some of who complain of related health problems including coughing, nosebleeds and headaches.

The Tennessee Valley Authority who is responsible for this disaster has not come to Delano's home or his neighborhood. Delano lives less than 1 mile from the disaster.
McClatchy Newspapers reports that coal ash dumped in the Dominican Republic from a Virginia-based power company has caused severe illness and birth defects in the local population. After years of repeated miscarriages, women whose blood levels show abnormal levels of arsenic are giving birth to babies with cranial deformities, with organs outside their bodies or missing limbs.
Media Contact EMAIL topmillerwoman@aol.com Pam and Gary Topmiller live directly across the Emory River from the TVA Coal Ash Disaster site. Most of their neighbors have taken a loss on their property by selling to TVA and leaving the area. Many of the houses stand vacant, a modern day ghost town with toxic coal ash in the air. The Topmillers are staying strong and want TVA to do the right thing.

The coal ash pond that ruptured and sent a billion gallons of toxic sludge across 300 acres of East Tennessee on December 22, 2008 was only one of more than 1300 similar dumps across the United States - most of them unregulated and unmonitored - that contain billions more gallons of fly ash and other byproducts of burning coal. Like the one in Tennessee, most of these dumps, which reach up to 1500 acres, contain heavy metals like arsenic, lead, mercury and selenium, which are considered by ...
