European Commissioners have warned that a decline in computer science graduate numbers may mean that Europe faces a shortfall of over quarter of a million IT practitioners in the next five years. In a statement issued for European E-skills Week the Commission claimed that European education and training systems have not kept up with the exploding demand for e-skills. They said that Europe faced increasing competition from the US, Japan, India and China and that while non-computer science graduates had recently plugged the gap, more needed to be done. The statement also pointed out that while there were more than 4 million IT professionals in Europe, double the number in 1995, less than half of them work in the traditional IT industry.
