Obama CRIES Connecticut Shooting MASSACRE Leaves 27 Dead 20 Children 7 Adults GUNMAN Adam Lanza NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 20 children, in a terrifying Friday morning shooting spree that rocked this genteel community. The shooter was identified by the Associated Press as Adam Lanza, 20, who was found dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle from the back of a car and two semiautomatic handguns found near Lanza. His 24-year-old brother, Ryan, of Hoboken, NJ, was being questioned by authorities. A law enforcement official -- briefed on the situation but asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly -- said that Nancy Lanza, the shooter's 52-year-old mother and Sandy Hook kindergarten teacher, was among those killed. Authorities say an adult victim was found at Nancy Lanza's home, but would not confirm the identity. Details about what transpired at the school and the Newton home remained sketchy several hours after the shootings, which began at about 9:30 am, shortly after classes began. State Police Lt. Paul Vance said authorities were still examining the gruesome crime scene and determining victims' identities and piecing together the sequence of events. Children lucky enough to escape the carnage fled in frightened groups -- some crying, some holding hands -- as ...

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that the shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which is a K-4 school. A second law enforcement official says the man's mother, Nancy Lanza, was a kindergarten teacher and is presumed dead. NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked Friday, killing at least 26 people, including 18 children, by blasting his way through the building as young students cowered helplessly in classrooms while their teachers and classmates were shot. The attack, coming less than two weeks before Christmas, appeared to be the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007. The death toll — 26 victims plus the gunman — was given to The Associated Press by an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Panicked parents raced to Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, looking for their children in the wake of the shooting. Students were told to close their eyes by police as they were led from the building. Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher. "That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he said. "He was very brave. He waited for his friends." He said the shooter didn't utter a word. A photo taken by The Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders. The suspect was 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, whose mother, Nancy, works at the school, a law enforcement official said ...

The gunman who killed 26 people, 18 of them children, in Newtown, Conn., was 24-year-old Ryan Lanza and he targeted his mother, a kindergarten teacher who was among the dead, sources told NBC News on Friday. A second family member was found shot to death at that person's home in Newtown. Police also were interviewing his brother to find out what he knew, sources told WNBC. Records show Ryan Lanza lived in Hoboken, NJ, at a home that police searched shortly after Friday morning's attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He lived near the school between 2006 and 2011, those records also show.
President Obama delivers a statement on today's shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut. December 14, 2012.
As many as 27 people have been killed, including 18 children, in a shooting attack at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut, US media say. State Police spokesman Paul Vance would not confirm the number of deaths. US media identified the gunman, who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, as Ryan Lanza, 24, said to from New Jersey. If the death toll is confirmed, Newtown would be the second-worst US shooting, after 32 died at Virginia Tech in 2007. Friday's shooting is the third major gun attack in the US in 2012. In July an attacker killed 12 people at a premiere of a Batman film in Aurora, Colorado. In August six people died at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. Children's 'eyes covered' Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy is meeting the families of the victims, a spokesman said, and is expected to visit the school later in the day. He is expected to make a statement at 15:30 EST (20:30 GMT) US President Barack Obama is also due to deliver remarks on the shooting 15 minutes earlier. The American flags on Capitol Hill in Washington DC have been lowered to half-mast in the wake of the attack. Sandy Hook School - described by correspondents as a highly rated school has more than 600 students in classes from Kindergarten to 4th Grade - spanning the ages five to 10. Police arrived at the school soon after 09:40 local time (14:40 GMT), answering reports that a gunman was in the school's main office and one person had "numerous gunshot wounds".
