More Employers Looking for Armed Guards Updated: Saturday, 28 Aug 2010, 7:22 PM MDT Published : Saturday, 28 Aug 2010, 7:22 PM MDT PHOENIX - Many worries come with tough times, and some employers right now are scared the economy could lead to more violence in the work place, and they're taking action. One valley security agency said the troubled economy is driving businesses to ask for armed guards because they are concerned about what some desperate, unemployed people could do. FOX 10 spent the day at an intense training camp. Bullets thundered in the desert Saturday as men and women trained to become armed security personnel for valley businesses. Out at the Ben Avery Shooting Range, Lyle Rapacki, director of training for Anderson Security, said the security company has seen a 35 percent increase in calls that appears to be coinciding with the number of layoffs. He said losing a job can make a person feel hopeless, and when strapped for cash, a person can become desperate. In early August, a disgruntled employee at a beer distributor in Connecticut fired off a round of shots killing eight of his co-workers before he turned the gun on himself. The Anderson Security Agency said businesses are concerned a tragedy like that could repeat itself in the valley. Their officers are taking part in an intense 2-day study, both inside the classroom and outside of it ...

Hartford, Conn. In what could be shown as the perfect reason why more American should open carry firearms, Omar Thorton, tells us in his own words, why he killed 8 people at his workplace. Racism. With the highest employment in decades and a consistent slow down in the economy, the workplace has become a hotbed of frustration, suspicion, anxiety and anger. Apparently this hostility at a Conn. Budwieser Distributor blew over with a shooting rampage that took 9 lives. We listen in to the 911 conversation Omar had after his killing spree. Again and again, he tells the 911 operator that he is calm and wishes that he shot more people. Apparently aware of his own impending doom he struggles to record & verbalize his tale of racism and abuse at the workplace. Meanwhile we listen to an unarmed women, begging and pleading for police to come and save her. If only "open carry" was allowed in the workplace, 8 of these employees, may have had a fighting chance. www.ournewsnow.com Family and friends of the victims are still searching for answers after police say Omar Thornton opened fire on his co-workers. Eight people were killed and two people were wounded before the suspect killed himself at a Connecticut beer distribution center yesterday. Police have released new details about what happened during the shooting rampage. They say Thornton went to a disciplinary hearing in the morning after he was caught stealing beer from the warehouse. Thornton was given the chance to either resign or be fired, so he chose to sign a one-page resignation letter. Police say Thornton then asked for a glass of water, headed to the kitchen, and opened fire. "He got his lunchbox with weapons inside, exited the kitchen area, and started shooting as soon as he got into the hallway," said Sergeant Chris Davis of the Manchester Police Department at a news conference this morning. "He went into a large warehouse area where there were additional victims there, he then chased one or more victims into the parking lot." Thornton had no prior criminal record, and all of the weapons were registered to him. He had previously complained of racial harassment in the workplace. A memorial service for the victims is scheduled for 7 pm Tonight at Saint Margaret Mary Church on Hayes Road in South Windsor. A parishoner at the church was a victim in the killings.
