I love to fly! It has long been said that flying is the safest mode of transport and that is how I feel, but now a CBC News documentary is posing questions about safety in the skies. The story is about 'pilot-fatigue-related issues' and it is disturbing on many fronts. First many regional airline pilots earn about the same amount of money as a fast food restaurant worker - $16000 per year. The flight crews are responsible for the safety and lives of people aboard the aircraft. Low wages are unacceptable. Transit workers, unionized in most large cities earn way more than that. Ironically the heads of airlines can put 'real value' on their worth even as airlines struggle to survive, while devaluing the work and worth of their employees. Governments are no better. The report stated that Canada had a study commissioned based on New Zealand where the airlines, pilots and government work together to come to solution of this pilot-fatigue-related problem. The study was made with recommendations which the government promptly did not and has not acted on. Whats the deal? And finally did you know that LAX has a parking lot full of RV's for pilots who are part of the working poor. Check out the CBC Story. Twenty-eight people have died in a dozen plane crashes across Canada over the past decade where fatigue was cited as a possible factor, a CBC News investigation has found. Transportation Safety Board reports note pilot-fatigue-related issues in six deadly crashes and in an ...

Colgan Air Flight 3407, marketed as Continental Connection under a codeshare agreement with Continental Airlines, was a daily US regional airline commuter flight from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to Buffalo Niagara International Airport in New York State. A Bombardier DHC8-402 Q400 operating as Flight 3407 departed late from Newark on February 12, 2009, at 9:20 pm EST. Shortly after the last communication by the flight crew with approach control at 10:11 pm (03:11, February 13 UTC), the plane stalled less than a mile northeast of the Outer Marker (LOM) while on an ILS approach to Runway 23[1] and crashed into a house in the northeast Buffalo suburb of Clarence Center, a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Clarence, about 5 nautical miles (9.3 km) short of the runway threshold. A total of 50 people were killed including the two pilots, two flight attendants, 45 passengers (including one off-duty pilot), and one person in the house. The 44 passengers and four crew aboard the plane, a Continental Connection flight operated by Colgan Air which was on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Buffalo, were killed, FAA said. (Reuters) ARTICLE BY/FROM AFP - YAHOO NEW YORK (AFP) - An ice build-up may have contributed to the crash of a Continental Airlines plane that went down outside of the northern US city of Buffalo, killing 50 people, federal investigators have suggested. ADVERTISEMENT Forensic teams on Saturday scoured the rubble for human remains and pieces of the broken-up plane in a search for clues as to the cause of the crash of Continental Flight 3407. The aircraft, on a flight from Newark in New Jersey to Buffalo, plummeted onto the house in Clarence Center late Thursday, exploding into a fireball and killing all 49 passengers and crew.\ One man in the crushed house also died, although his wife and daughter escaped with only minor injuries. "The crew discussed significant ice build-up -- ice on the windshield and leading edges of the wings," said investigator Steven Chealander of the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB). The clue was yielded by the recordings on the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder recovered from the scene on Friday. "Significant ice build-up is an aerodynamic impediment. Airplanes are built with wings that are shaped a certain way and ice can ...
