Freezing winter temperatures in North America have had a devastating effect on Floridas coral reefs. Water temperatures need to be just right for coral to survive, but last winter was lethal, with temperatures dropping six degrees lower than average. Some coral areas were fortunate enough to be protected by the Florida Current - a warm water mass that blocks extreme temperature variations but much of the reef fell victim to the sharp drop in temperature. Al Jazeeras Cath Turner has this report.

Highlights of the opening of HYPERBOLIC CROCHET CORAL REEF: A WOOLLY WONDER in March 2010 at the SCIENCE GALLERY, Trinity College, Dublin. Created and Curated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in Los Angeles One of the acknowledged wonders of the natural world, the Great Barrier Reef stretches along the coast of Queensland, Australia, in riotous profusion of colour and form unparalleled on our planet. But global warming and pollutants so threaten this fragile marvel it now faces devastation, along with reefs around the world. In homage to these disappearing treasures, Australian sisters Christine and Margaret Wertheim instigated a project to crochet a handmade reef, a woolly testimony that celebrates also a strange geometry realised throughout the oceanic realm.

We know more about the surface of Mars than we know about the Kimberley Marine Environment. Turning the Tide, WA Marine Science Institute 2009 On 9 February 2010 the Western Australian Marine Science Institution and the Australian Marine Sciences Association WA branch held the Marine science in Western Australia: Show and tell symposium. Over 230 researchers attended the Western Australian Maritime Museum at Fremantle. More than 100 two-minute newsflash presentations by scientists from government, academia and private industry gave an outline of most of the States marine. The newsflashes were spearheaded by summaries of Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) research results in six key areas ecosystems, climate change, Ningaloo Marine Park, fisheries, biotechnology and oceanography. WAMSI Chief Executive Officer Steve Blake said marine research was a vital prerequisite to answer questions about the survival of coral reefs, climate change, the future of marine species, food webs, fisheries, tsunamis, extinctions, warming temperatures and ocean acidification. Speakers discussed the dazzling array of new corals being discovered in the Kimberley region, the presence of heavy metals, tsunami warning systems, ocean temperature and current speed forecasting, the impact of coastal developments, fisheries biology, social uses, dredging of ports, the discovery of new sponges, environmental pests (there are 55 known to impact WA waters), monitoring estuaries, and how ...

This is a 1080p sample i got from microsoft website, which is a trailer from Coral Reef Adventure. Description: Coral Reef Adventure follows the real-life expedition of ocean explorers and underwater filmmakers Howard and Michele Hall. The Halls guide us to the islands and sun-drenched waters of the South Pacific to document, in the biggest and best film format that exists, the health and beauty of coral reefs. On the giant screen, youll feel like youre diving and exploring right alongside them. Howard and Michele have been diving coral reefs for almost three decades, but in recent years, they have observed with concern the decline of their favorite reefs. Stirred to action, Howard and Michele set out for the South Pacific. They hope the images they bring back will raise awareness about the plight of coral reefs, and the health of the global oceans. From the dazzling underwater seascapes of Australia's Great Barrier Reef to the mysterious deep ocean corals of Fiji, and from the azure skies above Tahiti to shark-filled canyons off isolated Rangiroa, the Halls visit many reefs that are flourishing and capture on film many interesting reef inhabitants. Youll laugh at the little shrimp that wants to climb in your mouth to get its own bite to eat! Youll see how reef animals rely on each other in surprising ways. Youll dive down to the mysterious deep reefs of The Twilight Zone, a place no one else has ever been. Youll swim with hundreds of grey reef sharks, then zoom through ...
