UNCHARTED TERRITORY In 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery across the continent, arriving in what is now Astoria, Oregon, in December 1805. Their remarkable journey into the unknown evokes the pioneering spirit of all Oregonians and is the inspirational platform for us to spread ideas in search of the new frontier. "Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." —Ralph Waldo Emerson TEDx Established in 2009, in thespirit of "ideas worth spreading," TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED.com videos, live speakers and performers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. Over 1400 TEDx events occur annually around the world.

The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a carrier-capable ground-attack aircraft designed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The delta winged, single-engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later McDonnell Douglas. It was originally designated the A4D under the US Navy's pre-1962 designation system. The A-4 is a compact, light-weight design with a maximum takeoff weight of 24500 pounds (11100 kg) and has a top speed of more than 600 miles per hour (970 km/h).[1] The aircraft's five hardpoints support a variety of missiles, bombs and other munitions and was capable of delivering nuclear weapons using a low altitude bombing system and a "loft" delivery technique. Prior to the A-4E, power was supplied by the Wright J65; with the A-4E, the installed engine became the 9300-pound-force (41 kN) Pratt & Whitney J52. Skyhawks played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. Fifty years after the aircraft's first flight, some of the nearly 3000 produced remain in service with several air arms around the world, including 12 A-4(9 A-4KU and 3 TA-4KU) that have been modernized (and are scheduled to operate up to 2025[2][3]) for the Brazilian Navy's aircraft carrier, São Paulo.

For 27 days, from June 30 to July 27, 2012, a team of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of West Florida Public History Program will start out from Pensacola to St. Louis, Missouri. Departing from under the massive Gateway Arch, the "Corps of Discovery 3" will venture into the West, following in the footsteps of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and the rest of the original Corps more than 200 years ago. Along the way we will explore the Missouri River, Sprit Mount, Sgt. Floyd's death site, Mandan Village site, the National Grasslands, Minuteman Missile site, the Badlands, the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Devil's Tower, Little Big Horn, Pompey's Pillar, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, the Gates of the Mountains, the Great Falls, Lolo Pass, Fort Clatsop, Cape Disappointment, Mount St. Helens, Portland, Seattle, and much more! Splitting our time between camping and hotels, the highlight of the trip will be 3 days of white-water rafting down the Salmon and Snake rivers along routs nearly identical to those two centuries ago. Truly an experience of a lifetime! For information, contact publichistory@uwf.edu or call 850-474-2680. See you out West!

I'm doing 6 medallions of Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Albert Gallatine. Merriwether Lewis, and William clark, along with Sacajawea, made up the "Corps of Discovery Expedition" (1804--1806). It was the first transcontinental expedition to the Pacific Coast by the United States. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. Their objects were both scientific and commercial -- to study the area's plants, animal life, and geography, and to discover how the region could be exploited economically. Part of that expedition was to find the headwaters of the Missouri River. Three rivers formed the headwaters of the Missouri River and they were named after President Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin in July of 1805. Those headwaters are just 45 miles north of where I live. It's kinda cool.

Otter Point: The Return of the Wetlands tells how Lewis and Clark National Historical Park and Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce are transforming farmland into suitable habitat for salmon. The farmland, now part of Lewis and Clark NHP, was created when levies were built by the Army Corps of Engineers. The levies dried the wetland and destroyed healthy salmon habitat. To return the land into its natural state, the park service is replanting and reseeding the area and plans to breech the levy. This film was made during Film Camp in the summer of 2011 at Lewis and Clark NHP.

Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jerry Ensminger was a devoted Marine for nearly twenty-five years. As a drill instructor he lived and breathed the "Corps" and was responsible for indoctrinating thousands of new recruits with its motto Semper Fidelis or "Always Faithful." When Jerry's nine-year old daughter Janey died of a rare type of leukemia, his world collapsed. As a grief-stricken father, he struggled for years to make sense of what happened. His search for answers led to the shocking discovery of a Marine Corps cover-up of one of the largest water contamination incidents in US history. Semper Fi: Always Faithful follows Jerry's mission to expose the Marine Corps and force them to live up to their motto to the thousands of soldiers and their families exposed to toxic chemicals. His fight reveals a grave injustice at North Carolina's Camp Lejeune and a looming environmental crisis at military sites across the country.

Pompeys Pillar is one of the most famous sandstone buttes in America. It bears the only remaining physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which appears on the trail today as it did 204 years ago. On the face of the 150-foot butte, Captain William Clark carved his name on July 25, 1806, during his return to the United States through the beautiful Yellowstone Valley in Montana. Clark named the Pillar "Pomp's Tower." Pomp was Clark's nickname for young Baptiste Charbonneau, infant son of Sacagawea, the Shoshoni woman who accompanied the expedition and contributed greatly to its success. The name was changed to Pompeys Pillar when an account of the Expedition was published by Nicolas Biddle in 1814. "This rock I ascended and from it's top had a most extensive view in every direction on the Northerly Side of the river high romantic Clifts approach & jut over the water for some distance both above and below...I marked my name and the day of the month and year."
