My Daughter and I went to a Halloween Party dressed as the Power Loader from "Aliens." I love Halloween, and I wanted to create a costume that my daughter and I could share. She was amazingly content the whole night, and enjoyed looking at everybody else's costumes! I built this robot suit in two nights and a day out of cardboard boxes and hot glue. My baby girl rides comfortably in a Baby Bjorn with the roll cage protecting her. The entire costume only weighs about ten pounds, plus baby. My highest priority was keeping my little girl safe, so the costume was designed for mobility and quick exit in case of emergency. The boots are basically cardboard slippers that could pop right off. With a shrug of my shoulders, I could pop the arms right off. What you can't see from the video is that there are no bottoms on the robot arms, so my human arms were completely free and unimpeded. I could leave the claws hanging idle from the shoulder joints while I could address any of my girl's needs. I would have had to take the suit off to changer her diaper, though! I have dreamed about becoming a creature like this since I saw "The Dark crystal"( landstriders scene) when I was a child. Way into my adult life now I went to see circ de soleil, while watching the blank face crutch walkers, it hit me, why don't I combine them both. When I did a search on line it turns out there are others with the same idea (Thank you Garen and Mellissa for the info aka. Stilt Spirits). This creature I refer to as "what nightmares are made of" is 7 feet tall and primarily made of recycled foam. An Old Foam Eggcrate Mattress, duct tape (that has been spray painted black) coffee dyed cheese cloth and dollar store spooky cloth. I used old wooden crutches, I modified to make taller since they only go to 6.6ft. The most expensive thing was the dry wall stilts that I bought, which I found out is cheaper than making stilts from wood. My dream/nightmare has come true! READ BELOW FOR MATERIAL INFO TO MAKE COSTUME!!! We made 4 legged stilt costumes for halloween. We call them stilt spirits for lack of a better name. Mine has extra large medical crutches on the arms which make it really great for your back. Very comfy! Circus peg stilts for the legs (custom made by thespinsterz.com). Garen used dry wall stilts for his legs. They are mainly made of upholstery foam (it comes in a big roll for chair cushions) and fabric. Surprisingly easy to make. We were inspired by the Frouds who made the Landstriders in the Dark Crystal. They have seen them in person and love them! We were also inspired by Miyazaki. Feel free to ask any questions if you're making a similar costume and need advice. Video belongs to me. Music is "The Ghost Inside" which belongs to Broken Bells. Great song.
