Nakahira presents a shrewdly observed portrait of a modern, sexually assertive woman—an unsettling character for a changing but still patriarchal society. Nakahira Ko is well known for his sun tribe classic Crazed Fruit, and continues the tradition of stories about young people breaking boundaries in this interesting Nikkatsu film. Kaga Mariko, who I kinda fell in love with from her other work with Shinoda (Pale Flower, With Beauty and Sorrow) and Kuroki (Silence Has No Wings), is stunning in this. Catholicism features prominently in this lighthearted movie with a very dark undercurrent. Looking at all the iconic stills and screencaptures accompanying this post, I think it's safe to say you can see where her appeal comes from. The soundtrack to this film is well known and well liked, and one of Mayuzumi Toshiro's best. Toshiro worked on many famous Japanese classic film soundtracks such as Imai's Cruel Story of Bushido, many Imamura films from Pigs and Battleships to The Profound Desire of the Gods, Ichikawa's Tokyo Olympiad, and the eternally somber and reflective vibe music of Naruse's When A Woman Ascends the Stairs. Yujiro played a wild kid in this film, whose ambition is to become a jazz drummer, but has more of a talent for trouble than rhythm. Released at the peak New Year's season, the film became the third biggest box office hit of 1957, fans flocked to see him. it also inspired rock-concert reactions from audiences, who clapped and yelled when Yujiro sang about being "a drummer, a no-good drummer, when I get mad, I start a storm." The character also fits Yujiro's persona very well, and epitomized a certain individualism -- a kid who said what he thought and did what he wanted, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. No agonizing over violating codes or offending seniors. Instead he laughed at his enemies and, if he was pushed, pushed back. He didn't have a single cringe in his body -- or soul.
