The Crittenden compromise is succesfully passed through congress, and remains almost unchanged until 1901. When president William Jennings Bryan, followed by intense international pressure and a majority in congress, declares slavery illegal. Though the practise is dying in the south, whose economic capacity is slowly increasing after the presidency of William Mahone (a hero after his economy-building policies as virginia governor), the south was infuriated, and the southern states seceeded from the Union in quick succession from 1901-02.
