La storia del rapporto tra Sigmund Freud e il suo nipote americano Edward Bernays. Bernays invento' il mestiere delle pubbliche relazioni negli anni '20 e fu la prima persona ad usare le idee di Freud per manipolare le masse. Egli mostro' per la prima volta alle corporazioni americane come esse potevano far desiderare alla gente cose di cui non aveva bisogno, collegando beni prodotti a livello industriale con i suoi desideri inconsci. Bernays fu uno dei principali architetti delle moderne tecniche di persuasione della societa' dei consumi, usando ogni trucco a sua disposizione, dal collegare celebrita' ai prodotti all'eroticizzare le automobili. Il suo successo piu' famoso fu il rompere il tabu' sulle donne che fumavano, persuadendole che le sigarette erano un simbolo di indipendenza e liberta'. Ma Bernays era convinto che questo era molto piu' che un semplice modo di vendere prodotti. Era una nuova idea politica su come controllare le masse.
