For quite some time, Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee tried to persuade former player Dale Hunter to return to the team as its coach. This season, McPhee finally got his man — just not for very long. Hunter quit as Washington's coach on Monday after less than six months on the job, saying he wants to return to his family, his farm and the junior club he owns in Canada. "It was the right thing to do," Hunter said. He is the owner of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, and he was the coach until McPhee beckoned in late November after firing Bruce Boudreau. Hunter's brother Mark took over as head coach of the Knights then, and one of Hunter's three children is an assistant. Hunter's 76-year-old father scouts for London; his sisters go to the games; another son lives nearby while attending college; his daughter is in the area, too. Plus, Hunter and his brother own about 2000 acres of farmland near his hometown of Petrolia, producing mainly wheat along with corn and soybeans.

BOSTON -- Troy Brouwer scored a power play goal with 1:27 left to lift the Capitals to a shocking 4-3 win over the Bruins in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Benoit Pouliot was called for a slash with 2:50 left and Brouwer scored from the low right circle with 37 seconds left on the power play. The defending Stanley Cup champs must now win in Washington on Sunday afternoon in Game 6 to force a Game 7 back in Boston Wednesday night. The Bruins continued to be snakebitten on the power play in the opening period. Zdeno Chara blistered a slapshot that rang off the post and crossbar before careening to the corner. The Bruins got two more shots on a power play later in the first but couldn't not capitalize, watching their power play fall to 0-for-14 in the series. The Bruins almost scored shorthanded when Daniel Paille broke in alone, only to hit the left post. The Bruins and Capitals skated to their seventh scoreless period of the series. The Captials took advantage of a pair of huge breaks to break out on top in the second. Defenseman Joe Corvo blocked a blast by Marcus Johansson with his right leg. He stayed on the ice and struggled badly to remain in the play. Despite his heroic efforts, Nicklas Backstrom appeared to interfere with Greg Zanon in the crease and Alexander Semin took advantage by taking a loose puck between the circles and firing a shot past Thomas. Just over three minutes later, Jay Beagle took a loose puck and fired a shot from the left ...

BOSTON -- Chris Kelly unloaded a slap shot from the left circle that beat Braden Holtby just 1:18 into the first overtime to give the Bruins a 1-0 win over the Capitals Thursday night in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at TD Garden. Tim Thomas stopped all 17 shots for the shutout. Game 2 will be Saturday afternoon, again in Boston. With Washington's top two goalies not even dressing due to injury, Holtby stole the show. He stepped in for Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth and stopped the first 29 shots he faced. He was pressure heavily in the second as the Bruins outshot the Capitals, 17-2 and 26-7 through two periods. The Bruins had plenty of chances to take the lead on the power play. But as has been the case in the last two weeks, the man advantage was not much help to Boston. They had a golden opportunity late in the first period when Jay Beagle was called for a double-minor high sticking penalty. The Bruins couldn't score and the penalty carried over into the second period. Just as the Capitals killed off the remaining two minutes, 33 seconds of the penalty, Troy Brouwer sent the puck over the glass and the Bruins received another two-minute man advantage. The Bruins got a total of eight shots on goal during the six-minute span but could not solve Holtby. The Bruins registered the first 10 shots of the second period while Thomas didn't face a second-period shot until just over the halfway mark of the 20-minute session. Superstar Alex Ovechkin was ...
WILMINGTON, Mass. -- The Boston Bruins continued their on-ice preparations for the Washington Capitals this Thursday night in the opener of their best-of-7 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The Bruins enter as the defending Stanley Cup champion for the first time in 39 years and the No. 2 seed in the East while the Capitals had to fight in the final week of the season to make the playoffs and finished as the No. 7 seed in the East. The only Bruins player not on the ice Tuesday was defenseman Adam McQuaid, out with an upper body injury suffered in the final week. Bruins coach Claude Julien said Tuesday there was no update on his availability.

Mr. Ed Holder (London West, CPC): Mr. Speaker, Canada's 10th largest city is home to the London Knights hockey team and their legendary coach Dale Hunter. The London Knights have long been a cornerstone of both the London community and South-Western Ontario. Head Coach, Dale Hunter, is a name synonymous with the triumphs of the Knights -- today rated the number one hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League. He led the team to their 2005 Memorial Cup win, four straight season titles and has the distinction during his era, of coaching more players who have gone to the NHL than any other Junior coach. They've included; Corey Perry, John Tavares, Rick Nash, Pat Kane and Nazem Kadri to name a few. Dale himself is a former NHL superstar, who as Team Captain brought the Washington Capitals to the Stanley Cup finals. And now, after eleven years with the London Knights, Dale returns to the Capitals as head coach. We will miss Dale behind the Knights' bench, and Londoners wish him every success. Just one more example of a great Canadian Export to help the United States. On behalf of all Londoners, Dale Hunter -- thank you - it's been a great ride.
